Advance Wars

Advance Wars BoxshotAdvance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising BoxshotAdvance Wars: Dual Strike BoxshotAdvance Wars: Days of Ruin Boxshot

This game series developed by Inteligent Systems and published by Nintendo is one of few handeld RTS games that work well for a range of players.

With you featuirng as a commanding officer, you move around a world map trying to repel the Black Hole Amry who are trying to take over the world. This is a turn based game and may be one of the reasons why it works so well.

You have the ability to capture buildings (both public and enemy owned ones) which gather you points. These points are then turned into cash which you can use to expand your army. You have the ability to buy infatry, tanks, long range missile launchers, aircraft and ships.

Featuring multiplayer via cable or wireless play for DS owners, this game features a campaign mode, skirmish mode, and multiplayer battles. On the DS "Dual Strike" game there is also a real time shoot them up game where you control the person and go around destroying the rest of the units on the map. With the latest DS instalment, the game features online play via Nintendo Wifi.

Features that make this game liked by many are the simple yet effective turn based battle sequences, gradual increase in AI difficulty and touch screen commands on the DS versions.

Advance Wars is available on Gameboy advance (Game 1) (Game 2)
Advance Wars is also available on Nintendo DS (Game 3) (Game 4)

Loved the games, especially the dual strike one . Not only is it the best in the series, it is THE best game available on the DS . It is played completely with stylus and uses the dual screens like no other game .

Problem is that after Dual Strike improvements were almost impossible, which is why the latest instalment feels like a little step back . Still liked it though . I wonder if new games will be released as the designers have done so much with the series...maybe a future instalment or a medieval edition...

I only have Days Of Ruin, the latest one. I think there was a name change for the UK and other areas as well.

Anyway, the online play is good, and the mic support works pretty well, the missions are just too damn hard. That, or I stink at the game. :P

I've only played Dual Strike.

The game is also known as Fammicom Wars if you're wondering about name changes. It has also been in production in Japan since the 8 Bit Nintendo era.

Ah right, I may add this at a future date if I get some info but will keep Advance Wars in the title as this is the western name for it so not many may know what Fammicom Wars is (like me :P)

It was probably changed because the Americans didn't know the Nintendo as Fammicom. That, and the game would sound silly if it was called Nintendo Entertainment Wars...

Actually, I take that back, it sounds interesting.

Anything with references to old school consoles is already awesome. I find the name better than 'Advance Wars'.

Well done on 10K Zero.

As for the debate on the title, I like it as it is based on the series venture to the west on GBA made it a huge RTS for portables. Its like alot of games, Crackdown was titled different in Japan as is Resident Evil (Bio Hazard) etc.

The first two games were among the best games on the GBA and the last game is awesome though gets difficult fast and the flowers story is very Japanese. If you do not like that sort of thing then you may not like this game. ~The only one of these I have not played is Dual Strike and it is next to impossible to pick up new now. Never mind. As a series, ranks as one of the best ever produced for nintendo.
