At first I was a little skeptical of FFIV for the DS, because it seemed like Square-Enix was just milking the game yet again only for the DS this time. But then I looked at some of the features in the game, and not only does it look completely revamped (graphics look great AND good voice acting!), but it looks like the RPG I've been waiting for on the DS.

Have any of you played FFIV before? If so, how do you think it ranks against most other FF games or other RPG's? I'm very interested in getting this game next month. :)

I have never played FFIV so I wouldn't know, but I might get it ... there are just other games I want more, especially than paying $40 a DS game.

I really haven't played the FF series. Sounds like a good game to play. Haven't also bought a role playing game in a very long time. I might pick it up.

This game is a masterpiece. It ranks in the top 10 for me for best RPGs ever. I bought FF IV Advance for GBA last year, but that won't stop me from picking up this version as well.

But what I'm REALLY waiting for is FF VI for the DS...

Gamespot gave this game a 9.0, and I just checked out the official site for this game and it looks amazing! I can't wait for it now!

This is the third remake of this game since it's initial debut. To be honest I love this game but I prefer FF 6 and I've already got it so I probably won't get the DS version.

That doesn't surprise me. As I said, this is legitimately one of the greatest RPGs of all time.

Turns out I'm getting the game tomorrow after all! :D

Can anyone tell me what I can expect? I've never played it before, so I'm eager to see what all of the hype's about.

Well based on your post in OT, I guess you've already started playing it. I'll pretend like you haven't though.

You can expect pretty traditional turn-based battles (which I love). You can expect an incredibly deep and engrossing story. You can expect to get absolutely attached to most of the characters. You can expect to NEVER complete all of the sidequests (unless of course you use a guide). You can expect a lot of surprises in that amazing story. You can also expect some drama and humor. Seriously, this game does everything right. If this is your first time playing it, it should probably take you about 25ish hours to complete, depending on how many sidequests you do. Oh yeah, and also plan on doing some grinding, in typical JRPG fashion. :P

I'm not in a hurry to get it on the DS yet b/c I just beat it on the GBA, but you can bet I'll be getting it soon to add to my collection.

I'd easily recommend it even if you've already played the GBA version. The 3D graphics really do change the game a lot by making it more modern and easier to relate to. I mean, let's be honest, I can only relate so much with three tiny dots on a screen labeled as "sprites" lol, which is why I typically stay away from the earlier FF games... but this game has a top notch presentation for a DS game (aside from the usual FF menus, which I've always disliked because of their simplicity). The gameplay seems pretty deep too, but I really would prefer the "traditional" turn-based gameplay without the active time battle system thingy. Oh well, it's a relatively mild complaint in the overall scheme of things.

So far, I like it. :P

I still don't feel the need to get this game :? maybe if I didn't have plenty more games that are just more interesting to me. I am not really a hardcore FF fan so that could be a reason (have only played III and XII:RW). I am glad to hear it is a good game and will probably get it at some point (possibly birthday or christmas). Maybe if Square games weren't $40 on the DS it would be more appealing to me, $40 just seems like a lot for a handheld game (no matter how good considering some great console games are also $40 or cheaper).

FF III wasn't even close to the quality of FF IV and VI. Seriously, before you reserve judgment, try either IV or VI. 2 of the best RPGs of all time.

And pretty much like every FF games, I'll pass. The only one I want to play is Crisis Core on my PSP.

Nope, every FF is completely independant of the others (FF XII RW aside, of course). FF IV seems like a perfect place to jump right in.

I agree, FFIII was very archaic in comparison to FFIV. I've played it more today, and so far I'm liking it a lot! Best RPG I've played on a handheld in a very long time.

Well, I wouldn't say Kirby Squeak Squad is a bad choice... but I didn't particularly like it all that much. It's really easy, and it's also a big step backwards for the series from Canvas Curse (which is one of my favorite DS games).
[QUOTE="bededog"]Do you need to know the stories of the other games to get this one? I might get this or Kirby Squeak Squad(or both).murlow12

Also agree. FFXII: RW was a very good game though... just thought I'd mention that. XD

I've played a lot of FF games, but I never seem to play them the whole way through. I'm hoping that will change with this game. In fact, the only FF game I remember playing the whole way through is FFCC: The Ring of Fates, which was only a few months ago. :? (Also a good game by the way, despite its glitchiness and minor flaws).

But anyway, you all get the point now. Go buy FFIV if you can. Square-Enix may like to charge a good bit for their games, but they are well worth it. Their games aren't skimpy by any means, you get the complete handheld experience. I'm very impressed by everything in FFIV so far... the CGI cutscenes, voice acting (not amazing voice acting, but it's still voice acting... and it's frequent), 3D graphics, music, gameplay, it's all top notch. Even the battle system (which I complained about for not being "traditional" earlier) is growing on me, I'm starting to like the active time battle system now, it speeds up the process of battles a little bit. :)

Well, I'll admit that remaking games over and over again is kind of "milking", but at least they don't spit out the same stuff. The remakes they do are distinguishable from one another, and add a lot to the game experience. Even their spin-offs are quality games... so as long as the games are good, who really cares?

You've got a point, but still I'd like to see another name then Final Fantasy on their boxes. Plus Square didn't bother making a sequel to Chrono Cross but went ahead and port a more then 10 years old game. Anyway....

Um, The World Ends With You is a new IP... >_>

And Chrono Trigger was long overdue for a remake, so I don't care much about there not being a "real" sequel. There are tons of people like me who want to play the game, but never had the opportunity to. Square-Enix is smart enough to recognize that that audience is there.

ahem, yes it was. I want to play it as well, but their current project is a port, not a remake (unless you count one new dungeon and using the second screen an entire remake).

I think I might end up getting Final Fantasy IV sometime soon. I will be visiting the Nintendo Employee Store within the next month, and if they have it there I'll probably get it, if they don't I'll just pick it up later (why waste an opportunity to save 25% if they do have it  )

These are some of the greatest games ever made. What you call "milking" I call "honoring". Everyone should have a chance to play these games. I'm utterly extatic that the younger generation is getting a chance to play these games, and people like me that grew up on them get to experience them all over again in a different way.

I'd have to say I like the term "honoring" a lot better too. That's actually very creative word choice.

You really should pick up this game sometime later Murlow, I think you'd appreciate seeing the storyline told in full 3D.

There's no question that I will. Even though I'm not going to play it soon, it is a must to add to my collection. I'll probably pick it up the first time I can get it for a slight discount.

Well, just as a heads up, Circuit City has a promotion going on for the rest of the week where if you buy the game there, you get a free $10 gift card with it.

Thought I'd mention that for anyone looking for a bargain.

That'd be enough to get me to buy it, but I won't have a chance to get to the store until the end of next week. Hopefully they have another promo soon.

And you think Nintendo ''honoured'' Mario when they made dozens of crappy games with his face on the cover? There's no ''honouring'' in Final Fantasy, no that's called taking advantage of a popularity which is smart but still milking.

And did I ever say the FF games are bad?

[QUOTE="bededog"]Do you need to know the stories of the other games to get this one? I might get this or Kirby Squeak Squad(or both).lebanese_boy

Hey I'm also getting Kirby Squeak Squad.

And pretty much like every FF games, I'll pass. The only one I want to play is Crisis Core on my PSP.

Utter blasphemy! What do you have against RPGs?

Blasphemy yourself :P, I love RPGs. Though the way FF games are being milked just absolutely disgusts me. Good for those who love them I guess.

These are some of the greatest games ever made. What you call "milking" I call "honoring". Everyone should have a chance to play these games. I'm utterly extatic that the younger generation is getting a chance to play these games, and people like me that grew up on them get to experience them all over again in a different way.

And you think Nintendo ''honoured'' Mario when they made dozens of crappy games with his face on the cover? There's no ''honouring'' in Final Fantasy, no that's called taking advantage of a popularity which is smart but still milking.

And did I ever say the FF games are bad?

Comparing Mario sports games and masterpieces like Final Fantasy sounds kinda desperate lebs...

I'm comparing the milking, not the quality. Guys I never said the FF games are bad, I just hate the milking :?

They made it for the GBA and DS. I'm not aware of another one. What system was it for?

You're mistaking with another FF IV which was technically FF III here in NA. See, the very fact that I know this scares me :(

There was also a PlayStation remake and another handheld remake in (though that was in Japan only)

yes. FF=FF, FFIV=FFII, and FFVI=FFIII. After that they fixed the numbers.

You probably played FFIII (not to be confused with FFVI) or something... which did stink. It was way too archaic and old school, to the point where it's hardly playable for a new generation of RPG gamers.

I'm really liking this game though, can't praise it enough. I mean, so far, the storyline may not be as complex as some of the newer FF's, but I don't mind it so much when you know that this is where at all began. When this story was created, it wasn't typical or cliche, it was original. So in that case, it has a great story, and it's pure RPG fun. It's pretty challenging also, got stuck on a boss battle for a little while... some dang zombie thing kept cursing my entire party leaving them defenseless (until I figured out how to avoid being cursed, that is...).

Yeah I know so FFIV is in reality FFIII which isn't FFIV because it's FFII, right? RIGHT?

Wow, I'm surprised to hear you say that, Rev. While FFIII certainly doesn't compare to the later games in the series, it was still better than 90% of current RPGs, IMO. It was also exciting to see the direction the series was taking for the first time, since FFIII was never previously available in the States.

The more we talk about this, the more I seem to realize that I'm a FF freak. I also played FF I & II Dawn of Souls, for the the GBA, but I didn't really like them. I think I feel the same way about those ones as you feel about FFIII.

As much as I love FF III through VI, I can't believe that I still haven't played and of the newer ones. I actually own 7, 8, and 9, but haven't gotten around to playing them yet. Yes, they're on my huge stack of games I own that I haven't played yet.

Well, not exactly. It was originally released as FFII for the SNES, b/c it was the second FF game released in the States. But it's always been called FFIV in Japan.

You're making it more complicated than it is. FFIV= FFII in the U.S. because it was the second FF game released here. FFIII for the DS is simply FFIII, because that was the first time it was ever released on the DS. (can't call that milking can you lebs..... since they remade a previously unreleased game :P )
