Is Nintendo ready to start charging for online play/features?

According to some of the stuff they've shown off at GDC, yes.

"Pay and play"? How about "rip and off". I sincerely hope that Nintendo is intending to make that for downloadable content and not actual online games, because as we've already seen their online system is crap even for a free service. Now, I might be able to understand charging for an MMO service (Animal Crossing), but if they start charging for online games that are more extensive like Mario Kart Wii then I'll have some serious issues with Nintendo.

I certainly hope not their online is poor at the moment and making you pay to go on certain games online in the future would just be a huge rip off.

I agree with you. With such a crappy system compared to the rival's, this would be more like a rip-off.

If it is for downloadeable content, it can be understood but I would certainly not pay for such things unless it's really worthwhile. As for online play, I would ditch it altogether if it requires a fee to play a certain game online. Nintendo is trying way too much to imitate Apple.

How exactly would that be imitating Apple if Apple isn't even in the gaming market yet?

Ok.....

I was talking about business, advertising and product features in case you didn't know. You don't need to be in the same business to imitate how another company does it's things.

Anyway yeah, to charge for Online when they promised us a 100% free online kinda makes me feel cheated for some reasons...

I know that, but I'm saying that Apple doesn't charge you in any similar way to use online features. :?

Nintendo will need to step up their act for me to start paying. I say: No friend codes, Dedicated chat rooms, leaderboards and a helluva lot of add-ons. Once the previous has been done, then I'll pay.

There's always the idea that perhaps the money for their online service would lead to improvements. I mean we're all fine with paying $50 a year for Xbox Live even though you can do it on other systems for free.

Though I find this hard to believe because Reggie said the reason the Gamecube didn't have online play was that it didn't have Wi-fi like the Wii and DS did and they didn't like that Xbox charged for online membership.

Well they are charging for firmware updates for the iPhone and iPod Touch, which is incredibly stupid but that's beside the point.

In any case I'm really looking forward to actually know what Nintendo plans to charge to us.

Pay-to-Play is nothing that will probably effect 1st party games. And plus it will be easy to tell which games require a fee to play since they will have an orange-red Wi-Fi logo instead of the blue one. It's basically an option for companies if they wish to charge for online (like EA with EA Nation or possibly Indie Developers that want to use online but cannot afford to otherwise). I doubt there will be many games that use that kind of online because it could possibly stop people from buying the game altogether.

Well an iPod isn't the first thing I would suggest you already have it so I can't say not to get it. :P The iPod Touch isn't the worst out there though. My one advice is to not download from the iTunes store, not worth it at all. If you want to download music go to eMusic or 7Digitial, the iTunes store is horrible.

Why? Are you saying you'd rather recommend me some dumb RCA or SanDisk brand instead? -_- I thought about buying a Zune, but my brother has one and it apparently has a lot of wasted features.

I personally don't like iPods but the iPod Touch did interest me for awhile but I doubt I'll ever get it. My PSP still fulfills well it's duty as a portable multimedia device for me. Not to mention it has RSS unlike the iPod Touch/iPhone atm.

Creative Zen to be exact.... Anyway the reason I don't like iPods are because they force you to use iTunes. That itself isn't that bad, but once you start downloading the crap DRM protected music off of iTunes you are forced to use iTunes to play the music no matter what. That is monopolistic at it's core. That's why if you want to legally download music do not use the iTunes store, you can get the same music at the same price without the DRM protection on other sites.

Not to mention iTunes sucks as an application as well. It has tons of needless process and is a bit buggy at times. iTunes is very picky about which file formats it supports as well. Winamp is far better then iTunes will ever be.

So... I think what could be ok is if Nintendo charges for a BETTER online service than what we're currently offered, but leaves the current online system free of charge. That would be kind of nice actually, I wouldn't mind paying for that if they offered more gamer-oriented features like voice chat.

Yup, it's like we are all one big "happy" family. Except everyone is that one annoying uncle you don't like to talk to but have to during the holidays and it's really awkward..... >__>

Well, i think they know with the Pay and Play games, they can't possibly have the online service they do now. I'd say these games will have no FC's, Chat rooms and all the online stuff you could want.

I wish give rid of friend code system or at least make your list expand over 100 gets tiresome cutting off friend codes and add news once you get full.
