So just a couple of weeks ago I was talking to a co-worker about games...turns out she's a big SNES gamer...so I told her I had a few games left from when I sold mine in 2004 (R.I.P.)..I let her borrow my Chrono Trigger cart....she says she may have another console....and she'll GIVE it to me!!

Sweet. Next day I am the proud owner of a very old very discoloured SNES...this thing was like...yellow, the old owner smoked alot inside and this thing looked like it! So I took the unit apart cleaned all the gross stuff off it (skin, dirt, liquids)...you know the kind of crap that people who don't care about their consoles let get all over it...(my gamecube and original controller are still in NEW condition, you could eat off them.)

I cleaned, but the console would not return to it's former gray glory...so I made the trips to Canadian Tire for some paint.....black gloss.

Now I have another SNES in my possession...along with my copies of Zelda: Link to the Past, Super Mario World and Chrono Trigger. I replaced the batteries in SMW and Zelda.

Sweet. Pics to come shortly.

Here is the gutted housing before painting:

Pretty gross.

Here's the after:

It looks better in RL, the paint is made for plastic, so it feels good also. Now I will be starting me a new game of Chrono Trigger here soon.

It cost $8 for the Krylon paint. The rest was just taking it apart, I had to drill out the screws on the bottom, then remove everything and disassemble the housing....I have no problems doing this because I do this kind of stuff all the time - the SNES was very basic for me to pull apart.

I debated painting the top portions, but figured the games would scratch it up, while the paint is tough - it wouldn't stand up to that long term.

Replacing the batteries - I opened my game carts and de-soldered the old batteries and installed new batteries - for game saves. This was free for me.

The painted pic really doesn't do it justice - it looks so much better.

Great job wickerman! Those are some real artistic painting/patience skillz you got there!

Heh... You know, if it was me, I wouldn't of even bothered disassembling it and all that nonsense.

It's the games that matter, not their physical condition for me! XD

I'm gonna hit some local game shops and see if I can't find - Star Fox, Killer Instinct and see whatever else is around.

This time I'm holding on to the console, played some Chrono Trigger earlier, man I hope that makes it to the VC service.

I still plan on changing the red LED for power to a blue LED (looks much cooler) and I *may* paint the top black.....I don't know.

You should've painted it all rainbowy and stuff...

I mean, black is just black. You could've employed some creative purple, a little blue, maybe some orange...

I would have gone with painting the main console a dark blue with silver on the part where the Cartridge goes in.

Well, I work on electronic systems far more complicated than a SNES...or any 'game' console' on a daily basis - I do not advise anyone taking ANYTHING electronic apart themselves - have a qualified person do that!

I thought about other colours, but honestly - black worked pretty good and required thin coats...the Nintendo logo in the housing is still in excellent shape because there wasn't gobs of paint put on....and I like the black!

that's not an internal game cart battery issue, that's a contact issue inside the SNES.....maybe something slightly mis-aligned and when the console moves it shorts out killing your save data.

a battery issue would be when you put the game back in and the save data is gone.

oh, i do have the SUPER GAME BOY cart...just didn't mention it cos it wasn't really worth mentioning. I used to use it to play stuff like Links Awakening...omg the colours on it are pretty horrible....not recommended.

I regulary clean ALL my Nintendo Consoles. Unfortunately the screen on my GB original gets dusty underneath no matter what! But it's fairly clean. My brother broke the clip on the battery compartment, so I took an old chargerpack (where I did not have the actual adapter), tore the clip off of that and Airfix'd (plastic glue) it to the old yellow Part. it looks good still and works fine :D

Always look after your console collections. Not just because they will be worth lots when you're older, but the sentimental value... (I'm NEVER selling mine, it's basically a part of my childhood)

Lol... I swear, that thing killed my eyes. I'd probably still have 20/20 vision if it weren't for that dang screen. All those hours squinting into it... The only time I could see it clearly was during the day when the Sun was completely out...

Yes, I thought the exact same when I popped Super Mario Land into mine after playing all the newest consoles and neglecting it for almost a year. It's so blurry! But that didn't stop me from beating the game again :P. Although I had to sit directly under a lamp to play it. All these people who rant about all these new machines, they really don't know how good it is nowadays, with flipscreen and backlights...still, the Original GameBoy ruled hard, infact right now my GameBoy and GameBoy Colour are attached to my GameBoy Player via GBC to GB link cable, and my GBA SP is attached to the GBA to GC lead, so I can use them whenever I want :D

Oh and I also had a problem with the GameBoy game cases, as you can see by the fact that only one is there. I gave the rest away to some friend in my primary school in year 3 or 4. Wish I hadn't now :(

I use that on Pokemon Red, to keep the connectors clean, cause I don't want anything to happen to my Save data, I caught all the monsters and traded and got mew with someone when I was 11. :D good times...

Man I remember the pokemon craze ....... these were the times :D. I'm reliving those times with pokemon firered now. But yeah, playing at nighttime was hard :(.

I had a light attatchment for all of my Gameboy's, but I really do appreciate backlights now.

I don't understand why the gameboy light didn't meet any success

I'm going to try that blue LED idea, I have a friend that works with that kind of stuff, he mods Xboxes and stuff all the time. If I get it done I'll post a pic.
