It was recently revealed that Nintendo had a brand new handheld ready for release last year, but chose not to release it due to continued success of the DS. What we don't know, is what this handheld was actually like.

What do you think Nintendo could do to improve their next handheld, in order to please consumers and gamers? Should we see a completely new concept, or an improvement upon the ideas of the DS?

Thats a difficult one I think just a new handheld with superior graphics and storage space might help for things such as downloads.

I would say better graphics, some storage space for downloads, and maybe more internet access

Well Nintendo needs to upgrade the graphics next time for sure. Maybe add an analog stick like the PSP? Nintendo needs to improve the online like usual, hopefully there will be a more coherent and worthwhile online experience.

The PSP's analog nub sucks. They need to completely revolutionize the analog stick or something.

And you guys are right, the friend codes have to go, and we need a worthwhile online system. Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection just isn't cutting it. They aren't living up to their promises with it.

I think an anologue stick would be a bit pointless if they just decide to make a another DS.

True..... but they'll need to move beyond the d-pad at some point. Using the touch screen for movement doesn't always work so well, as we've all figured out.

My initial response is to throw out the touch screen, but that isn't realistic b/c it's been so successful.  I think the most important thing is finding a game cartridge that can handle more data.  The current DS cartridges just aren't big enough.  The next biggest thing for me is backwards compatability.  I want to be able to play my DS games on it, as well as my GBA games (which may be asking too much).  If I can't do this then I'll definitely keep my DSL for a long time.

GBA support has gone from the DSi so don't expect it to be in the next handheld.

Graphics update and overhaul to elimnate friend codes so it would open up the onlne play for the handheld. A type of backward play would be nice too like what Murlow mentioned.

Don't forget the possibility of an online store offering GBA games, that's another form of backward compatibility... only you have to buy the games again.
