The Legend of Zelda clearly is a well respected, and on most occassions well selling franchise. However, in recent years the buzz has slowly but surely declined for the series. When you talk about it, people no longer seem to see it as that big of a deal... or at least where I live anyway.

In that case, Phantom Hourglass looks to be the variable as to what direction the series goes. After all, it is the biggest release of the holiday season for the DS, which is the fastest selling gaming platform EVER. Not only that, but the game looks solid, touch screen controls and all. Can Phantom Hourglass revive some interest in Zelda? So far, it has in Japan, so we can only hope that history will repeat in the case of the Legend of Zelda.

No, that was Twilight Princess. :? I think they were referring to the 3D console Zelda games when they said that... not handhelds. However, technically, you could be right since Phantom Hourglass will be the supposed "last Zelda game as we know it".

I don't think there is a problem with the level of interest in Zelda.

Well from what I have heard you use the touch screen alot in the game and that will be different from other Zelda games. I think it is cool that items like the boomerang will be used when you draw where you want the boomerang to go. It is alot different and the online play might revive the intrest in the series. This game seems really intresting and could be the best Zelda since Ocarina Of Time.

There isn't necessarily a problem, but you can't deny that Zelda doesn't get the buzz it used to get. I know for a fact that that is the case where I live... and sales have declined since post-OoT for the franchise, especially with Japan.

I don't think there is a lot of buzz about it now. I really don't here about nowadays in public, schools, and in general. I do think that PH will spark Zelda interset due to its touch screen controls and story line. Also the easy ability to catch on playing a Zelda game.

I disagree. Most of my friends are non-gamers, but when I tell them I'm playing a Zelda game they immediately get interested. I still see Zelda as the most popular Nintendo franchise.

Well, at the school that I go to, Nintendo is never a popular subject. It's always about the PS3 or the Xbox 360, which is depressing since Nintendo is by far my favourite gaming company. However, even among the non-Nintendo fans, The Legend of Zelda has always garnered a sort of mutual respect among the gamers, so in all honesty, I haven't seen much of a decline in popularity in the Legend of Zelda series.

However, I do hope that Phantom Hourglass is a top-notch game, so that my faith in the series can be renewed and satisfied for the time being. :P

Well, I guess all places are different. I don't think Zelda is the most popular Nintendo franchise though, it should be, but I'm fairly confident in saying that Super Smash Bros. is probably the most popular Nintendo franchise in terms of word of mouth and sales.

I can see what you mean also, ihateelvis, Zelda kind of has a mutual respect here as well... I don't really hear anyone talk badly about Zelda games.

It is a very popular franchise probably the best one in 3D from Nintendo. After Ocarina Of Time though which set the standard for most games. The impact in the last few Zelda games hasn't been well recieved. I think it's a great franchise one of the top 3 Nintendo has. You look at Super Mario Sunshine not a Mariogame to many liked and it's sales were nowhere near the likesofthe others like a Mario 64. It was just Mario 64with a waterpack but when it went back into 2D platforming with New Super Mario Bros it sold very well and hopefully if Phantom Hourglass sells about over 6 million worldwide I would say that it is going to be good for the series and as we all must know is Zelda is not a match in sales for a Mario game but if it can get about 6 or 7 million the intrest might be revived. Zelda games are good and this could be the right direction for the franchise.

I believe that the series has declined in popularity. But for gamers who have left the series this isnt calling them back. This game is very different from the classic fans of OoT that after MM walked away for the series. The old popularity will probably not be revived but I believe it will achieve a different sort of popularity. It is selling well in Japan but I don't think the game can make alot of old fans come back, but it will get tons of new fans i believe. Do you get what I'm saying? If not read the next example otherwise just skip whoeva posts after me ;)

Ok still confused? Imagine 3 friends: Tom, Bob and Paul. Tom and Bob both played and loved OoT but Paul wasnt really interested in it. Tom didnt get a gamecube, he got a playstion 2 and walked away from the zelda series but Bob still loved the series over the course of time. Come 2007 and Bob gets his hand on PH and Paul plays it for a bit and loves it. End result = Tom (old fan) doesnt like it really, Bob (series lover) loves it and Paul (not so expierenced gamer) loves it to.
