what do you think of the omission of common summons like Ifrit and Shiva in FFXII?

Adds new flavor to the recent FFs which is beginning to lose the traditional FF flavor?

Talk about originality, it seems recent titles have lost this specialty under some similar producers, FFXII is one of the masterpiece that broke out of this deadlock.

Thesesummons are not new, therewere originally featured in older FF games.

So, to end the PS2 reign, producers bring back memories of older FF games in this great piece of work (FFXII). And, summons are one of the commemoration icons.

But then, it was at the cost of popular summon creatures like Shiva, Ifrit, Bahamut. They are now airships! (in FFXII) :P

As you know, they always use names like Cid, Shiva, etc. in the FF games. Just because they don't appear where we're used to seeing them, doesn't mean it's a detriment to the game in question. That said, I do have to say that even though Ifrit and Shiva were not usable summons in FF12, I still loved all the summons that were present in the game. Very cool stuff. I loved their finishers.

Yeah, I know, because Ifrit and Shiva actually were worth using sometimes.

The only time I used the new ones are to see what they looked like. Other than that I had no use for them. So I prefer the old ones that just did thier spell and were on their way.

I felt that the new ones were cooler and "seemed" more powerful, yet they were the most quickly forgoten spell in my arsenal.

i used the summons when i could and i thought that they were pretty good and useful. but the best part was summoning most of them. i still have yet to beat XII and i intend to in the near future just so i can see all the Esper summons.

No one ever said that they did, but they have become some of the trademarks of the series.

It shows that FF can exist without some of it's common elements and still be FF. FFXII had chocobos and moogles. It was 100% real traditional FF in many ways. It also pushed the series foreward more than any game before it

Now that is the absolute dumbest thing you've ever said. How about IV when they pushed plot more than ever before, or how about VII with 3-D graphics or maybe X with voice overs. But ya XII pushed the series foward more than any ff before it with eliminating the random battles and adding in boring gambits.

FFXII [pushed it mroe dude. It pused the gameplay in directions that it had been neding to go for quite some time. IT pushed the quality of the writing to something rarely ever achieved in video games. It pushed the graphics to the absolute limit of hte PS2. It pushed technical directing to unpredidented levels in FF and so much more.

Gambits own dude. They are the best thing to ever happen to the series. The eliminate the annoyances, such as having to heal and dure status effects ever y 10 seconds

I'm sorry but the introduction of 3-D graphics and the use of voice overs are in my opinion more important then the addition of gambits. Oh i kinda think FF VI and FFT has better writting too.

FFVI and FFT did not have better writing., Not by a long shot. As much as I like hte script to FFVI because it is funny, it is not quality writing. It is bad translation. the PSP port of Tactics has writing on par with FFXII and Vagrant Story though.

FFXII did alot mroe for the FF series than just the gambits, as I described. FFXII does push the series more than any previous entry. That is a fact

Well i dissagree i think XII's script was fairly boring and uninteresting, while i was more interested in what was being said in VI and tactics.

I am pretty sure FF1 didnt have chocobos i know no summons dont know about moogles. FF2 on the other hand did have chocobos :). Anywho i like to find where cid is in every game and see what act he takes on that is what i like to see in the FF's(hopefully he is in the 13's) also Bahamut is in all of them and i love to see where he appears. Airships are in most of the FF's as well. :)

The technical quality of the scripting in FFXII is very very high. It is an extremely well written and translated script. That much is a fact. It may not appeal to you, personally, but toat doesn't make it any less well written

You should play the remakes of the SNES games for the gba since snes games are hard to come by. If you don't want to play all of them VI is gonna be one you should definetly look into seeing as its the most popular from that era, even though IV has a pretty good story to.

As long as it isn't X-2, or any other spin-off, then I recommend it. I haven't played XI, actually, but I don't care about MMORPGs anyways, but if that's your cup o' tea, then whatever, you choice.

it doesn't hurt to move on, but that doesn't mean we have to change our summons, like the usual Ifrit or Shiva. Will FF have to move on from chocobos, moogles, airships also? Some things should be okay to keep, I think.

Dont forget crystals. Even though they are left out of some ffs they are still a signiture of the old school and imo better games.

I missed Ifrit and Shiva in the FFXll too. I do love the summons that they give you in FFXll. They are cool. You know Square Enix they will find a way to use them again. If you get the Collecters of FFXll they tell you that all of this FF is not new it was in another FF game as an unlockable.
