Final Fantasy Tactics was truly amazing. The music done by Sakimoto and Iwata was infectious (Ramza's theme is still one of my favorites.) The graphics featured charming sprites, and the summons were compared to the graphics of FFVII's summons (which were state of the art back in the day.) The story was a new departure of the series, focusing on political intrigue instead of just a hero saving the world from a great evil, a trait that was passed to the Ivalice of Final Fantasy XII.
The battle system was addicting, especially when you unlocked some of the more interesting jobs. The Job system itself was pretty in depth, at least in those days, requiring points obtained from actions in battle rather than a set amount at battle's end. The classes themselves might not have the flair that the Advance versions have, but they were pretty cool back then. The story never stalled or got boring; rather, it made you just get one more mission in before you put the controller down.
It did have a few downsides, of course. The translation was pretty rough in many places. There were some broken combat solutions as well...basically keep T.G. Cid in your party and nothing could stop you. That, or a party member as the Calculator class. The difficulty could be unbalanced at times, going from an extremely easy battle to a very hard boss was typical, and having to spend a few hours to grind XPto attempt the encounter again was common.
All in all, it provided an awesome experience and spawned a legacy of Ivalice and Strat-RPG's. Here's hoping for a massive, meaty FFT for the PS3.
