Hey all. First topic on this board, so I shall make it count.
SPOILERS FOR OCARINA OF TIME AND THE WIND WAKER.
Think back to Ocarina Of Time. Think of how the evil Ganondorf stole the Triforce of Power. Think how he took hold of Hyrule, how he sucked it dry. How he destroyed it.
Ganondorf was a typical villain. Like Mario's Bowser, Ganondorf was evil just because. He wanted power, and lots of it. That was who he was.
Or was it?
The Wind Waker gave us insight into Ganondorf's mind. It showed his reasons, his motivations, for doing what he did. The Wind Waker showed Ganondorf's sensitive side.
"My country lay within a vast desert. When the sun rose into the sky, a
burning wind punished my lands, searing the world. And when the moon climbed
into the dark of night, a frigid gale pierced our homes. No matter when it
came, the wind carried the same thing... Death. But the winds that blew across
the green fields of Hyrule brought something other than suffering and ruin. I
coveted that wind, I suppose." ~ Ganondorf.
Ganondorf is not pure evil. He is not bad just for the sake of being bad.
He is a victim.
His land, the desert. A harsh place to live. The life he led was tough. The wind itself brought death. But this wasn't the case throught the land.
Hyrule was so close, yet so far for Ganondorf. It was the home of the Hylians. They lived in comfort, in shelter. They had everything they needed. They were the exact opposite of the Gerudos. And for this, Ganondorf hated them.
He plotted his revenge. He got the Triforce of Power, then put his plan into action. He changed the land. Made it reek of death, of destruction. He made the people of Hyrule live the lives the Gerudos had been living for all time.
Then the Hero Of Time came. He fought back, placed a seal on Ganondorf. Locked him away. He was so close to attaining full power over Hyrule. And then it was all taken away.
But did Ganondorf hold a grudge? No. He holds the limp body of the Waker of Winds in the air. "Do not fear. I will not kill you..." . The boy who had sealed him away had been reborn. He now held that boy. But he did not. This boy meant nothing to him. He still just wanted his dream to be fulfilled. To rule Hyrule. With the Triforce gathered in front of him, he made his wish.
But once again, was beaten. He watched as the King of Hyrule stole his wish. Took what was rightfully his. Squashed his dream once more. Ganondorf knew that he would never be that close again. Knew his chance had slipped him by. Finally he cracked. He had nothing left. It was all gone. Thanks to the boy garbed in green.
Having watched his dreams shattered for the second time, it is easy to understand Ganondorf's rage. But even his rage had its bounds. He could have used his supreme magical skills to defeat Link. But this was just a boy. Ganondorf made the fight fair. Swords only. He gave the boy a chance. He challenged him in a way he knew he would be able to fight back. Once more, Ganondorf is being quite the gentleman.
Link plants the Master Sword in Ganondorf's head. "Heh Heh... The wind... It is blowing..." . Ganondorf reminds us of the deadly wind. He is not bitter. He is not enraged. He acknowledges defeat. He is gone. For now.
Ganondorf. Victim or Villain. You decide.
