Hey all. First topic on this board, so I shall make it count.

SPOILERS FOR OCARINA OF TIME AND THE WIND WAKER.

Think back to Ocarina Of Time. Think of how the evil Ganondorf stole the Triforce of Power. Think how he took hold of Hyrule, how he sucked it dry. How he destroyed it.

Ganondorf was a typical villain. Like Mario's Bowser, Ganondorf was evil just because. He wanted power, and lots of it. That was who he was.

Or was it?

The Wind Waker gave us insight into Ganondorf's mind. It showed his reasons, his motivations, for doing what he did. The Wind Waker showed Ganondorf's sensitive side.

"My country lay within a vast desert. When the sun rose into the sky, a
burning wind punished my lands, searing the world. And when the moon climbed
into the dark of night, a frigid gale pierced our homes. No matter when it
came, the wind carried the same thing... Death. But the winds that blew across
the green fields of Hyrule brought something other than suffering and ruin. I
coveted that wind, I suppose." ~ Ganondorf.

Ganondorf is not pure evil. He is not bad just for the sake of being bad.

He is a victim.

His land, the desert. A harsh place to live. The life he led was tough. The wind itself brought death. But this wasn't the case throught the land.

Hyrule was so close, yet so far for Ganondorf. It was the home of the Hylians. They lived in comfort, in shelter. They had everything they needed. They were the exact opposite of the Gerudos. And for this, Ganondorf hated them.

He plotted his revenge. He got the Triforce of Power, then put his plan into action. He changed the land. Made it reek of death, of destruction. He made the people of Hyrule live the lives the Gerudos had been living for all time.

Then the Hero Of Time came. He fought back, placed a seal on Ganondorf. Locked him away. He was so close to attaining full power over Hyrule. And then it was all taken away.

But did Ganondorf hold a grudge? No. He holds the limp body of the Waker of Winds in the air. "Do not fear. I will not kill you..." . The boy who had sealed him away had been reborn. He now held that boy. But he did not. This boy meant nothing to him. He still just wanted his dream to be fulfilled. To rule Hyrule. With the Triforce gathered in front of him, he made his wish.

But once again, was beaten. He watched as the King of Hyrule stole his wish. Took what was rightfully his. Squashed his dream once more. Ganondorf knew that he would never be that close again. Knew his chance had slipped him by. Finally he cracked. He had nothing left. It was all gone. Thanks to the boy garbed in green.

Having watched his dreams shattered for the second time, it is easy to understand Ganondorf's rage. But even his rage had its bounds. He could have used his supreme magical skills to defeat Link. But this was just a boy. Ganondorf made the fight fair. Swords only. He gave the boy a chance. He challenged him in a way he knew he would be able to fight back. Once more, Ganondorf is being quite the gentleman.

Link plants the Master Sword in Ganondorf's head. "Heh Heh... The wind... It is blowing..." . Ganondorf reminds us of the deadly wind. He is not bitter. He is not enraged. He acknowledges defeat. He is gone. For now.

Ganondorf. Victim or Villain. You decide.

Good story, but still like to think of Ganondorf as pure as I fight him.
Some Officers should make this a story on the front page.

And that is the best response I have ever recieved on Gamespot :D

Thanks for your opinions guys, it's great to get feedback like this.

I just wanted to get this idea out there, because Ganny is a pretty sophisticated guy when you think about it. It is just nobody ever does think about it :P

EDIT: Hey wait, did I just break a GS user stereotype? *SHOCK HORROR*

Well, first off, I would like to start by saying that was very well written. So good job on your part.

But anyways, I do in fact agree with you and see the point you are trying to get across. He probably did just want others to feel his pain in the beginning and resented others (in this case, the Hylians) for living the lifestyle he couldn't. So for this he really just wanted "revenge" on the world for not suffering as he and his people did. But when he saw how much power he could actually obtain with the Tri-Force... he just became corrupt by slowly letting all of that power go right to his head. And with people getting in his way as he tried more and more to reach his goal, his hatred for those (especially Link) got steadily stronger as time went along. And in the end, he was so deep into the whole 'seeking-ultimate-power' type of deal that he just couldn't turn back. He may have had somewhat of a caring side left in him and all, but that quickly became consumed like the rest of his body, which eventually led to his demise... for now anyways.

The thing that you all forget is that Ganon is really a monster. He is not human thats just a disguise to hide that he is truly an ugly pig demon monster thing. He wants power at all costs, he commands an entire army of monsters that will forever serve their master, and for all eternity he is the dark lord, the evil spirt that haunts Hyrule.dvader654

Maybe he was a victim first before he gain power, but now it consumed him so maybe Ganon's monster form is his true dark side. Who knows? Maybe the one who made the series?

I suppose he is kind of a victim, but that fact that he's a complete titface makes me lean toward the 'villain' choice.

He wasn't pure evil in the beginning of course. Think of Darth Vader: He starts out good, but he gets so corrupted, he turns into almost pure evil, but even Darth Vader has good in there somewhere. That is what I think about Ganondorf, but he probably won't ever redeem himself, like Darth Vader.

Wow. Where did this come from o_0 .

Well, it may be old, but I stick with my views.

In reply to an earlier post, Ganondorf isn't just a human-esque disguise for the pig-like Ganon. Ganondorf is his original form, but with the Triforce of Power and his own evil desires, he became Ganon.

Darth Vader. Good comparison.

Very deep indeed. It makes me question if he really IS a villain.

It definintely is a convincing theory, but what about the other games that he is in, do they show the same story?

The other games give very little backstory on Ganondorf, basically saying that he is an evil power that is once again trying to take over the world. In the few games where his backstory is mentioned, we see there is more to his evil desires than originally thought.

Yeah, when I think about it, the earlier games were more straightforward when it came to good and evil, and in the later games it delves into his past, and why he has become evil.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. You rock my socks off. I love the fact that you draw attention to the all the emotional turmoil Ganon feels, because I found that (when I first played windwaker) I dismsed Ganon's little speech at the end, and never really acknowledged the fact that yes, he could have squashed little Link, and instead, chose to fight him fairly.

one could look at the battle as Link being the villian, since gannendorf is more than honorable, offering to not use his powerful magic, and Link double teams him, and then when Gannendorf is stunned he stabs him in the face.

I think he is a villian because he was a victim.
