Okay, I'm only being the verbally-correct nerd for a moment because I've heard this subject brought up before and never resolved. What is the difference between Hyrule and Hylia? Is it a geographical separation, or a 'city within a state' kind of thing? I've heard npc's in the game being called Hylians and Hyrulians, and I've no idea what the difference is supposed to be....if there is supposed to be a difference.....hyrule is the country in ledgend of zelda. the humans that inhabit it are known as hylians. Hylian is a race of human with long ears. there is no place known as hylia that is all

Having never been a grammatically correct nerd before, I'm not 100% sure of the answer to this one. I do think, however, that above posters may have been somewhat wrong.
As you know, Hyrule is the land we play these games on. Here is where it gets tricky. Hylians are the people. There are Gerudo's, Zoras, Gorons, and Hylians. The Hylian shield is so called because of its belongance to the Hylian race.
Hyrulean seems to refer to all the races of Hyrule. Think about it this way.
Take Australia (Hyrule). Divide the counrty into each of its states. You get Queenslanders (Hylians). However when talking about all the populace, you get Australians (Hyruleans). I'm pretty sure that is the difference between the two terms.
For the most part I think this is correct, except for "Hyrulean seems to refer to all races of Hyrule" personally I think Hyrule is the country of the OoT platform where the gae takes place, "Hyrelean's" are the race of humans that occupie certain area's ( Ranch, and the castle town) other regions like the Zora's Domain I think could be refered to being apart of Hyrule, I dont think "Hyrelean's" would be the ideal name for any other race then the humans...as stated previoous they are Zora's...just like the Goron's are Gorons...ect ;) does that make sence?Having never been a grammatically correct nerd before, I'm not 100% sure of the answer to this one. what? i thought hylians were the humans that are originally native to hyrule and have pointy ears and hyruleans are the people that at one point or another came to hyrule so they are not originally native to hyrule and don't have pointy ears.lunchboxerthen you thought wrong. sorry for the dissapointment
Wow, just read my other post, I worded it horribly :|
I'll try and give better examples, because I'm 99% sure what I said was right.
Lets take America this time.
People who live in America (Hyrule) are known as Americans (Hyrulians). People from Texas are known as Texans (Hylians).
as you can see, refering to the whole populace (Which in the case of Zelda is Hylian, Goron, Zora, Rito etc), we call them Hyrulians. We can see see Hyrulian is 'Hyrule-Ian' , 'Ian' being a suffix used for the peoples of other countries in the real world.
Hylians however, are a specific race of people. Being the race with the most power of Hyrule, they become Hylians. We can see Hylian is 'Hy-Lian', using the suffix of Hyrule to show their rule, but just ending it there.
Yeah. That is the difference between Hylian and Hyrulian.

Yeah, Hyrule is the whole region, and its inhabitants are Hylians. The lake is called Lake Hylia too.LoZfreak32191
it's like saying, "i am a hylian. i am part of the hyrulian race. i live in hyrule."xxjacobshxx
Kind of. However it is more like 'I am a Hylian. I live in Hyrule, thus I am Hyrulian.'

That sounds pretty good. When I used to play FFXI Online my character's name was Hylian. I got a lot of comments about it wondering where I got the name from. Only a few people would actually know what it meant. :)
