I'm not really sure why they named Link...Well, Link...There's only one thing I can possibly think of, I'd say they named him Link since basicly in almost every Zelda game it's about the past, present and future in a way. For an example, Link "Links" to the past or future. Let's use "A Link To The Past", get my point? Well, most people that I know think of it this way, it does make sense.

It's possible that Link's name never was Link, mabye when they began creating Zelda the whole story of time travel made them find a great name that would suit the old name, thus naming him Link.

I believe that's where the name comes from as well. Link could be the link between time, the link between the powers of the Triforce, the link between the heroes of the games, the link between legends, the link between the Zelda's royal bloodline (I'm don't mean Link is part of the Royal family. I mean the Zeldas are all linked by blood).

I have always thought that Link's name symbolizes the fact that Link himself is the player's 'link' to the gameworld.

The German word link, linke, linker etc. translate to English as a form of the word "left". And guess what?!, Link is left handed! I don't know if there's a meaning to this or if it's just coincidence.

Hang on, was it clear enough to tell if Link was using the exact same arm to use his arsenal in the original "The Legend of Zelda"? I'll have to check this out, I have the GBA Classic version of it, I barely play it since it's not as fun as it used to be, not to mention that it's very old now. :| Still, I'm just happy enough that I actually have the original, it's like a trophy. :D

You have the option to name Link so the games never actually call him "Link" unless you name him that. However, the back of TWW box says Link and, of course, the creators call him that.

I dont' necessarily think that Link is a bad name, I've grown to like it. However, I can't believe how many people call him Zelda. I believe they do that because that's the titles of all the games so they assume that the "legend of Zelda" is the legend of the hero. It annoys the hell out of me when people call him Zelda.

A friend of mine thought his name was Zelda, it was pretty funny when he meet the real Zelda in OoT and how she commented on how his name sounded familiar.

I think link is a dumb name too. But, I don't think that Nintendo was trying to create a memerable name, because the games are called The Legend of Zelda, not the Legend of Link. Link is just the hero that saves Zelda when Ganondorf, or some other nemesis, arises. I think Nintendo wanted to make Zelda the mainstay in the series rather than Link. Zelda is the one whom the story revolves, so.

Does anybody know if this is true?

My friend told me that in the original LOZ on NES, on the Japanese version, that our hero we now know as Link didn't have a name. He was just the unknown hero who saved Zelda. But American test groups didn't like it because the hero didn't have a name so they gave him one.

Also, does anybody know what his name is in the Japanese versions? Maybe in those his name means something that got lost in the translation?

Who knows really
