My friend tells me that getting original Zelda roms for his emulators are better than the real Zelda games on the NES and SNES. I don't know about him but I always have seen better graphics through a TV than a computer, mainly because I've been playin on a ps2 or something but anyway he says all the games look smooth and clear, but any I've ever gotten were cheesy.

Let me know your thoughts on what you think about emulators and roms..

Well, unless you have the actual game they are illegal, but I dont think they're better because you have to use a computer keyboard instead of the controller which the game was designed for.

This subject is a touchy one, a few years ago I had every Zelda previous to OOT on ROM. Now however Nintendo have stopped people issuing these ROMS, it is actually quite difficult to find a website that you can still download ALttP from. IMO playing a ROM on a computer just isnt the same as playing the console, it always feels better to play Zelda when you use a control pad.

You can always buy a controller pad of any kind at radioshack, and hook it up to your computer.

I have every single Zelda but Windwaker on a ROM. The only games I have on a ROM legally are OoT, MM, LttP, and Link's Awakening DS. I finally got the master file in OoT (again) and I'm working on MM again... The only reason I have those games on the computer is because my cat pissed on my N64 and SNES. So technically, it isn't illegal for me to play those. I downloaded Zelda2 to see what was all the fuss about it being impossible to beat. I have the two OoS/OoA games on ROM because I already went through two gameboy colors. The first GB was stolen when I left it in my lunchbox at school a few years ago. The other GB became a battery drainer, and only lasted like 1 hour on full new batteries. And my Platinum GBA's screen got smashed for no reason, and there was nothing but a black smudge of crystal gel. So I am not going to buy another GBA just to play Minish Cap. And the original Zelda, I got... I don't know if it is illegal or not... but I got it on the ZeldaQuest program. The guy used a system to create oldschool zelda dungeons, and he created three versions of the orignal zelda. One with the original graphics, another with updated graphics (similar to the remake of it on SNES, Zelda BS), and another with even better graphics. And I don't count the CD-i games.

I like the ROMs because you can record the gameplay and show it to anyone online. Or take good quality screenshots from the games. The only downside with the ROMs is aiming with no joystick on the N64 games. To get good accuracy, you have to pause the game and move down a slider named "joystick range" to around 45%. Other than that, it's basically the same. At first it feels weird, and you have trouble fighting even Deku Babas. But after a day or two, it becomes second nature and very comfortable.

And yes, the graphics are better on a ROM to my knowledge. For SNES, get a Zsnes and go to graphics. Set the resolution higher, and mess with the options to smooth out the blockyness of the sprirtes. And you can also change the sound quality to make it sound better as well. The default way it is set, sucks...yes. But when you set it to the way you want, it is perfect. For the NES emulator I got, I personally think the graphics are the same. I mean heck, I had a 19 inch screen TV I used to play my N64 on in my room. And my monitor is also 19 inches... sooo... it looks the same to my knowledge. I just had to turn the resolution up from 640xwhatever.

 Damn Cats! But seriously I see where you are coming from, ROMs are great for many reasons, but I would still rather play on a console especially a console as beautiful as the GameCube.

OK, let me clarify some things. This is from Gamespot's TOS:

"Illegal Activities
Posts that violate or incite others to violate the law are not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to, asking for or providing, in any way, shape, or form:
Illegal copies of copyrighted software (ROMs, Warez)"

Now since no one here provided links to any website, I think I might be allowed to still leave this topic open and not delete it.

Also,

ROMS ARE ILLEGAL EVEN IF YOU OWN THE GAME!!!

Sorry for the big text, but this way you will see it. This is from Nintendo:

"
Can I Download a Nintendo ROM from the Internet if I Already Own the Authentic Game?

There is a good deal of misinformation on the Internet regarding the backup/archival copy exception. It is not a "second copy" rule and is often mistakenly cited for the proposition that if you have one lawful copy of a copyrighted work, you are entitled to have a second copy of the copyrighted work even if that second copy is an infringing copy. The backup/archival copy exception is a very narrow limitation relating to a copy being made by the rightful owner of an authentic game to ensure he or she has one in the event of damage or destruction of the authentic. Therefore, whether you have an authentic game or not, or whether you have possession of a Nintendo ROM for a limited amount of time, i.e. 24 hours, it is illegal to download and play a Nintendo ROM from the Internet.

How Does Nintendo Feel About the Emergence of Video Game Emulators?

The introduction of emulators created to play illegally copied Nintendo software represents the greatest threat to date to the intellectual property rights of video game developers. As is the case with any business or industry, when its products become available for free, the revenue stream supporting that industry is threatened. Such emulators have the potential to significantly damage a worldwide entertainment software industry which generates over $15 billion annually, and tens of thousands of jobs."

Oh right. Well i never knew that. But I have never downloaded a ROM anyway because it always looked very dodgy. And if something is dodgy then it might have a virus.

Thanks for that, nuck. But I've always been under the impression that ROMs are legal to be used as back-up copies to a game that you actually own. Obviously, I've been mislead.

I was under the same impression Barmy. It wasn't until I was browsing the corporate section of Nintendo's website (for the thing Mr_Bob and us are planning to do ;) we realy have to get to work on that) and I noticed that.

I don't think we need to lock this topic unless someone explicitily asks for ROMS or someone gives out a website.

I will also say to the people talking about their ROMS that you are practically admitting you are commiting a crime in public.... :P ... just a warning.

Besides, someone might learn something if we leave this topic open and they read Nintendo's legal thing.

Yup, we do need to get to work on that... plan ;). Just to clarify for the rom thing though, not to scare anyone, but posting a link or insinuating the use of roms is viable for a nice little section added to your moderation history;). Also, if you happen to know of a rom site you can report it to Nintendo's legal department and receive a wonderful thankyou letter in return (I am guilty of reporting a few sites).:)

Since my thread was closed, I would like to make my comments here.

I sincerely apologize for posting that link. I didn't realize it wouldn't be allowed here, though I probably should have thought of at least the possibility. I mean, I would never post any links to ROMs or emulation software. I know that stuff is not realy legal, and that it's not allowed, and I fully agree with this and other message boards policies on such. I didn't consider what I linked to to be in violation of said rules because it's not a ROM, and it doesn't use any of Nintendo's game code or whatever. Now, though, after my thread's been closed, I understand why you removed the link (and closed the thread). I suppose it is, in a way, emulation.

Again, I sincerely apologize, and I had no ill intent, nor any disrespect or disregard for your rules or the law. I will also accept any and all consequences for my actions. Thank you.

Don't worry about it mate, just remember in the future!

Also what's the GS policy on Freeware/Shareware games? I mean I know that anything that could be considered a ROM is illegal, but if there was a shareware/freeware game and you wanted to post a thread about it (not in this union but just in a general one) would that be ok? For example, the Australian games magasine "Hyper" sent out a disc with 25 Freeware/Shareware games, what would GS do if a link was posted to one of these games sites? Again nothing to do with this Union but as you said it's open for people to ask questions! :D

ROMS are free, but illegal... the funny thing is, they'll never catch you. buy some blank CD-Rs and a control pad and you've got years worth of gaming right in front of you. money is for tools.
