When Lou Holtz was the coach of ND they had an option offense and they won the national champoionship.  It seems to be less and less these years that it is used.  Do you think its time has passed?

Yes i think the time has passed, i think its more of a pass-first era than an option-based era.

For sure, I forgot about Texas (......uhhh already, sorry) But I will say that I wasn't talking about it with a quarterback that could already run for 200 yards a game. Do you think if you don't have a Vince Young or Mike Vick style of running game @ quarterback, can it be done?

It can be done but u would still need a really athletic QB, maybe not as athletic as Vick or Young, but still really athletic. But you should probably only run the option if you have a fairly athletic QB.

It has been done without a really athletic QB though.  Todays defenses might be too quick though.

Just as long as the offense still incorporates some option passes and varieties, it's possible.

Option offenses can be very good and entertaining until they get behind in a game. The clock becomes their enemy. On the positive note, most teams don't prepare for them very well. The scout team has a hard time executing with the same speed and precision. The option teams always look better early on in a game. I personally enjoy them alot.

I thought Air Force was fun to watch...like you said, more of a first half team though.

Yeah it can, it wasn't too long ago that Eric Crouch was running all over evryone, plus you got Urban Meyer's offense which is an option offense but not in the ttraditional way.

not really. they were a spread offense with option plays. usually the spread was used for complete passing but west virginia and texas both have changed all of that and for the better.

I was waiting for someone to say that, your right. They werent the traditional option team like Nebraska and Eric Crouch. They ran from the shotgun, and they either always faked it to the RB and Young ran or threw, or they would give it to the RB. Thats all the offense was last year....and it worked great.

Young could either give it to the RB or he could keep it and pass or run himself. That is a form of an option offense.
