-When I was in my early teens, I used to like Napalm Death and Sepultura.
They had interesting videos that aired on *gasp* MTV.

Sorry but, lol Guitar World.

Several of those albums should be higher up on that list, and several of them shouldn't be on that list. Also, Carcass' Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious album is much better than Heartwork IMO, although I guess you could say that Necroticism was grindcore, therefore not counting.

Scream Bloody Gore and Altars of Madness are definately needed on that list, although I think they should be higher up.

Slaughter of the Soul shouldn't be on their, it's melodeath, and poor melodeath at that. I thought it was a lame attempt at death/thrash when I first heard it tbh.

The lack of Bolt Thrower is disturbing.

I don't know all from the list.

I like Paradise Lost, Napalm Death, Sodom and Sepultura, from the list, I've heared of Bathory before but I never listened to them.

Guitar World focuses on popular artists, and just selling magazines. Which is good for business, but it doesn't interest me.

I don't know if I could create a 15 album list for someone who just started, but here are some great death metal albums

• Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal
• Death - Scream Bloody Gore
• Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
• Carcass - Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious (Grindcore, but close enough to death metal)

I've just scratched the surface of Death Metal, in reality, but those would be some good starting points.

No, I don't read revolver.

I understand what you mean about Guitar World.  That's one of the reasons I stopped reading Vibe (before they went under), Spin, Rolling Stone for a few years and The Source.

If you can get your hands on it, Revolver's a good mag that covers all things metal and they have a section just for death and black metal.

Some albums on that list are very good, however some are not even death metal. The choices from certain bands are also highly questionable as they seem to lean towards the less aggressive, more groove or more melodic albums, for example Slaughter of the Soul, Heartwork, Wolverine Blues and Diatribes.

I've seen worse lists and I do not expect a pretty mainstream music magazine to mention underground gems but at least they could get their genres right.

Bathory probably had huge influence on Death Metal but it is my opinion that they were, are and always will be a Black Metal band.cousin_eddy
