Yeah, while I'm a music lover, I tend to prefer to stick with what the game has in itself. The background music (or lack of it) goes a long way to creating the desired atmosphere of the game for me.
I listen to music a lot while I'm playing some handheld games. Sometimes I'll listen to a whole Pink Floyd album at once while playing a game, or just make a playlist of some of my favorite songs and go through them.

I only play the single player on days that my Live is expired or when the game becomes outdated. Even so, the stories in most FPS games suck.
I usually play without the added music, but sometimes when I'm in the middle of an online shooter match I'll have my rock and metal playlists on shuffle playing in the background.
Depends on what game I'm playing. For example, if I'm playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (2) and I'm not content with the tracks within the game, I turn down the audio and play my own music.
