Distance yourself from your favorite artist or musicians or what have you for a moment. What irks you the most about the music industry? And what makes you smile?

Probably what irks me most is that it can be hard for artists that aren't in a major label to get the publicity they need. They're are many artists, bands etc. that deserve to be big but aren't, simply because they haven't managed to get signed to a major label.

Probably another connected to major labels is that there have been several cases of the damaging a band's reputation by forcing them in a certain musical direction, because they thought they knew better, being more concerned with sales than anything else.

As for the actual industry, I'm not sure what I like about it :P Except maybe that despite the drawbacks labels can give artists, I do like that many are able to give groups and artists good funding (usually) for their work.

The single worst thing I can think about it one of the biggest reason why they continue to fail so hard and why it was so easy for pirates to take over their business -- the price of their product. Sure, sure...it's one thing to charge full price for a new album as an excuse to offset production and marketing cost, but once they realized that (before Napster) people were still buying cds of old classic albums they actually dared to raise the prices as they felt people had no choice but to eat what they fed them. This was despite the fact that the cost of manufacturing an album had actually gone way done due to the ultra cheap cost of mass manufacturing CDs.

The main good thing I can think of is just the passion that some of the people had for music working at major labels. I remember after meeting the (now ex) president of Capital records, my girlfriend (now ex) and I used to spot him all the time just rocking out at concerts of bands he loved in the middle of an arena big and small -- no backstage standing around executive position for him.

What I don't like about the music industry is when a trend becomes big, they will sign anyone to the label no matter how good or bad they are.  It tends to make people hate the music.

What I do like about the music industry is that an artist after a certain amount of time can get their own label to help their friends and others put out records.

the fact that all that matters anymore is money. people who talk into autotune to cheaply made pop music about how "raw" they are. People with real talent are making less and less money.

I agree with you on that part. I don't see how that auto-tune stuff would be more popular, though.

what i hate is the trend programes like X-Factor and Pop Idol created, all coined by a well....how could i put it a money grabbing man who actually doesnt care bout music at large, also known as Simon Cowell.Even last year his arrogance towards the RATM for Christmas No1 was hillarious, in his stereotyping of RATM listeners and the fact his latest protege didnt even know who they were, even tho they made a massive impact.

The parts i like about the music industry isnt the industry itself but the scene that goes with the music,Central Scotland has a pretty big scene in terms of Core music(deathcore, metalcore, hardcore etc) and some of those bands are just immense, heck some have even got EP's out off their own backs with no backing but their own money and the whole feeling like its a community is pretty awesome aswell.I can go to a gig nowadays and i always bump into someone i've met which is pretty ace.

The sense of community is probably the thing i like most, smaller independant labels aswell..altho distro's tend to be done by bigger labels nowadays.

Still love what anti flag says in their liner notes who were one of the few bands in existance to wrangle a major label into their terms of contracts and not interfere with anything.

No thanks go to THE MAN.

I don't like how it seems a bit hard to get a hold of lesser known songs by a musician.

What I don't like about the music industry is how it is becoming more and more about the image of the musician, rather than there musical abilities.

Nowadays it's all about how "good looking" or "cool" the musician is, and since there is auto-tunes now people don't really need the ability to sing in the first place.

Real musicians (more specifically singers) are becoming harder to find, thankfully we still have some sources of finding talented singers (like The Voice).

Also, I don't like how real instruments are almost being replaced by machines.Â
