i was wondering what got people started on listening to music, and the type of music that you listen to now.
i thought it would be nice to have a fresh thread where lots of people have the oportunity to contribute to.
My mother got me started.
She sings opera and she also sings Gospel (traditional, old school stuff) and I totally loved it. She got me into Jazz, Blues and Classical stuff.
That's how I got started and then I discovered VH1 for Hair Metal (which I adore and no amount of **** talk about will change my mind).
My brother had some rap cassette tapes that got me into rap music as a whole.
Â
Probably when my dad offered to get me an mp3 for my 16th (which still works fine btw :P), yeah I was a late bloomer :P
I stocked with some of the more pop stuff I knew about at the time, the likes of Beck and Evanescence mostly, but then a friend on here got me into death and black metal, and a bit after that a friend in school got me into a now dead subculture called New Rave which featured mostly punk and indie bands mixing their rock with dance musics stuff. From there I just gradually began to try more and more stuff til my music taste became what it is today, featuring a bit of a lot of things, from Lady Gaga to John Wiese :P
It's kind of hard to say. I think one of the first bands I listened to was Queen back when I was in middle school, and then I eventually got my first MP3 Player (which I still have) when I was about 14, and since I listen to a lot of the same music that my dad does, I had been listening to a lot of his music for a while, which got me hooked on bands like Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Van Halen, and a lot of my other favorites. From there I've been building up my own collection of CDs:
When I had just turned four a girl who I'd never seen before broke into my home and started laying with my toys. We got the TV going and we listened to RAGE (an Australian music video programme). It was so loud apparently my parents who were outside talking to the parent of the girl (who had no idea where she was) heard and rushed in. We were listening to Madonna full blast.
That is my earliest memory of music, and one of my parents fav stories lol.
We made a habit of listening to RAGE after that point (quietly so our parents wouldn't hear) as she turned out to be my new neighbour.
Because of the very different mix of genres on RAGE I've grown to love all kinds of different music.
Most of the music back then was Grandmaster Flash, Bryan Addams, Maddona, ACDC, ect.
These days I listen to the above plus world music; Oleg Kvasha, Andre Bocelli, Ruslana, Bruce Springsteen, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, 30 seconds to mars, Gakt, Willie Nelson, Ruslana Lyzhychko, a couple of Japanese bands I can't spell, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Plus more.
So for music I've got an open mind.
when i was 1years old my parents calm me down wth music such as hello from lionel richi
thn i2give sth in 8-9 i heard black album from my brother's room & it was better than thou i think, so i asked my bro2give me sth like tht so he gave me a cassette wth mettalica in 1side and iced earth on the other and thn i got started on music, and now "MUSIC IS MY LIFE"
I started by myself first I listen to radios then I got sick of them, they play music over and over again.
so I decided to buy and download my type of music usually Rock and Metal songs.
but I listen to almost any type of music. I usually listen rock and metal.
I even studying on how to a guitar. It was inspiring when I saw bands got their lightning speed fingers on strings.
My grandma got me started with music when I would stay with her every now and then. She always played oldy goldies and I just progressed from there.
I'd say some of my favorite video games I used to play helped me get started. I didn't listen to music that much, but I loved the music on games like Madden and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4. When I got to middle school I got more into it.lensflare15
I like video game music too. Â
The song All Star by Smash Mouth.
I was probably 9 years old when that song came out...it was really catchy and the CD it was on was the first CD I ever owned. I'd play it all the time. Before that point nothing I heard really caught my ear.
(looking back on it that song wasn't that good)

Have you guys ever been to Ocremix.org? They have tons of video game music re-arrangements made by regular joes (some of whom are musicians or composers for other companies) from early Mario to Donkey Kong Country to games released in the last few years, and most of the later stuff sounds pretty good.
It may not be your cup of tea, but I figured I'd share with fellow VGM lovers.

No problem. Just watch out for the community if you end up there. The people there aren't jerks, but their humor can come off like it sometimes if you're not used to that kind of humor.
