Collaborative Challenge #1

This is a challenge for the entire forum to participate in. In this challenge, no one person will be writing a complete piece. The goal is to keep this story going as long as possible.

Basically, someone will begin by writing a paragraph. Since I'm posting the challenge, I'll start us off. A second person writes the next paragraph in the story. Each paragraph must make sense with the paragraph before it, since we're trying to write 1 story (just with 109 or so authors). The rules are simple. Two people must post in between your own posts (ie Me, GMan, Sparky, Me, or something of the sort). No cursing or gratuitis sex scenes. Additionally, no cheap everybody instantly dies posts.

The goals for this collaborative challenge:

Write a cohesive story, 1 paragraph at a time, with numerous authors

Obtain a minimum of 25 posts

If we're still going strong after 25 posts, we'll keep going. If not, I'll lock the thread down, and we'll begin CC2, which will give us a new starting paragraph and a more ambitious goal. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you got them.

And now for the paragraph...

--

Sweat trickled down my brow, running like a river into my eyes as I fled through the thick forest. Branches snapped around me; cobwebs breaking across my face. I looked behind me, but couldn't see them. I knew they were there. I could sense them, almost smell them. There was no stopping, not even stomped past a wasp nest and roused the angry swarm. A short twip sent something past me, and I increased my speed. They could not catch me; I wouldn't let them.

I clutched the small, metallic box tightly to my chest, adding its burden to each and every step I forced from my raging muscles. Every gnarled root reached to take me to the ground, and behind every tree that I stormed past was an impending promise that I would be overtaken by my pursuers, my efforts in vain. I had escaped them for miles, but every inch of my body screamed and pleaded with me to stop; and with the impending twilight, I couldn't fathom how much longer I could last.

Fatigue blurred my vision and caused my muscles to ache.  But I would not give in, for if they caught me they would kill me.  The native tribes were merciless in their vengeance and I had angered them; I had stolen the box.  Why they cared for it I did not know.  It had strange markings upon it....was this what they believed to be a god?  A tree root reached out in an attempt to trip me, causing me to stumble.  As I regained my balance I ran smack into the middle of a tree trunk.  I walked backwards a bit, swaying dizzily.  Then I heard them, speaking their language.  I turned to find them coming upon me fast.  Then I began to run again, to run for my dear, dear life.

In between pants I began to promise myself, "Never again will I do this, I am retiring, If I can survive this ..." I searched my memory for worse jobs, I drew a blank. This was by far the absolute worst job I had ever agreed to. Normally I steal food or fur, little things that people have never tried to kill me for, well except once, but that was a long time ago. I was slowing down and should've been killed. I turned my head to face the onslaught headed towards me, and they had stopped dead in their tracks ...

Looks of anger fled from their faces only to be replaced by startled fear. They began backing away, turning on their heels and running away from me at top speed. At first, my ego felt a radiant boost, and I assumed a superman pose and taunted the natives as they fled. As a shadow fell over me, my words fell silent. I held my heavy panting breath, and heard the rumble from behind me as the shadow grew still further. I turned around, raised my eyes to take in the massive form.

A massive creature stood before me.  But was it a creature?  It appeared to be made of stone.  Its hulking body looked as if it were constructed from boulders.  It had no eyes, but I had the impression it was looking straight at me.  I had heard of these behemoths before but never believed they had existed until now: golems.  I began to back away slowly.  Maybe it could not see me yet, but I wasn't sure.  Maybe it was simply waiting for the right moment to crush me.

The creature seemed to hum with a pulsating din, and my head began to throb along with it. I hadn't noticed until this moment, but the box began to hum in unison with the beast. My eyes searched frantically for my next move, and though the creature had yet to make his advance, the uncanny glow in its eyes knew that I was here. Had I not been so close, the deep purples and blacks of the stones which made up its edifice would have been invisible against the backdrop of the night that had now come, its sparkling and menacing pale blue eyes simply disappearing amongst the myriad of stars above. It must have been following me for some time, as there was no crater in the earth hailing its arrival. Just as I wondered how such a beast could move unheard, I noticed its wings, slowly swayed out against the wind. Though barely visible against the night, even despite its size, one thing was clear. Its wings were not of brick and mortar. They were the same metal of the box I held, which had begun to hum with more urgency, though whether it was meant for me or this colossus, I didn't intend to wait and find out.

I guess I could have articulated that point a little...better.

I spun on the heel of my foot, intending to run again, to run back the way I had come. But even as I turned, the box's vibrations intensified. The box seemed to be pulling me. Not back toward the creature, but upwards. I looked below me as my feet left the ground, my eyes widening. I turned my head as far as I could, thinking it possible the creature had picked me up, but it had remained stationary. It was looking down upon the spot where I had been. The hum and vibrations halted suddenly as I found myself next to the golem's shoulder, looking at a short little man with a large nose and a chameleon-like outfit that hid him against the body of the creature. He moved to speak.

"My box." In an effort to keep my head on my shoulders, I tried to reason with him, "It's not your box, I didn't take it from you!" The golem seemed unmoved by my logic, once again he asked for it "My box, give me my box." I responded, not as if I was talking to the golem, but as if I was talking to a five-year old. "No, it is not yours!" This seemed to irrate him, he took a step forward saying, almost chanting "My box, My box ..."

Not faced with any other option, I hastily drew my sidearm from it's holster. I took off the saftey and aimed at the behemoth as if my tiny gun would do it any harm. I took a deep breath and shot the beast once. The bullet pinged uselessly off the creature and in a split second it had reared his arm back to hammer me with it. Still clutching the box tightly, I dove desperately to the side and just narrowly missed being flattened to a pulp by the Golem's arm. He pulled it out of the ground as damp soil and rocks dropped off of it. Knowing somewhere in my mind that it would have no effect, I shot him once more. The bullet embedded itself in the Golem and he seemed stunned for a brief moment, and I was on the run again.

As I ran through the forest, branch and web sticking to my face, the sweat running cold down my face, everything seemed to shift and roll. The whole jungle seemed to move as a wave. I could hear the clank, clank of the golem behind me. A moment later, and it was lost. All I heard was a small voice yell, "Ah **** This is gonna hurt!" I spun around and spotted the figure that had sat upon the golem's shoulder, flying toward me at full speed. The golem was nowhere to be seen. As the little man was thrust into me, sending me flying backwards into a solid substance, the landscape faded around me. All that was left was the little man and myself, in what appeared to be a black room divided into a series of squares by glowing green lines.

But before I could further examine my surroundings, the man was on top of me and wrestling furiously with me for the box. My hands felt extremely grimy, and my grip on it was slipping. In panic, I kicked the man in the stomach in an attempt to push him off me. This caught him off-guard, and he flew off me and landed painfully ten feet away. I scrambled to my feet to run in the opposite direction as he lay there, clutching his stomach and moaning, but stopped as I felt a movement from inside the box. In his struggle for the box, the man had ripped off one of the latches holding it together, and now the dull humming that it had been emitting was replaced with a violent shaking that threatened to break it open altogether.

I looked down at the box and stood there as the vibrations eminated through my body.
Both curiosity and fear slowly began to get the better of me and although I knew at any moment the man could easily recover at any moment and strike me down I could not help but stand there and stare at the box, too frightened to open it but too curious to look away. And slowly another latch began to quiver and bend from the vibrations untill finally with a scream it broke and the lid slowly heaved open. I tried to peer underneath to see what it contained but as I did I fell something hit me in the back and I fell forwards on top of the box.

Not sure if that fits in completly but I think it does!

What the heck is going on? I thought to myself. This was supposed to be an easy job... Get the box and go they said. Just get it back to us, they said. Now what? I remembered the weight across my back-- It was hard not to, as the weight was kicking and scratching me, all the while screeching, "My box! Mine! Give me my BOX!". Bewildered, tired and by that time, not a little hungry, I decided to propel myself off the box, dislodging that... dwarf.

I heaved myself to my feet, hoping the suddenness of the movement would dislodge him, but he tenaciously held his grip. His ams tightened around my throat and despite all my struggles he began choking the life out of me. As the world began to turn black, I dropped the box onto the floor with a bang...

I had no time to think but through force of habit I shot the dwarf. He stumbled backwards and collapsed in a bloody heap on the ground. Quickly I picked up the box and looked inside.

Looking inside the box was akin to looking into a solar eclipse, and I had to squint my eyes to even attempt doing so. The hum had become almost deafening explosions, although it took a moment for me to realize the roaring cracks of lightning emanating from the box were not audible, but instead beating from within every molecule inside my body. Something stirred in the box, although they were but blurred shadows as my eyes slowly adjusted to the harsh light.

As my vision gradually cleared, I saw what was in the box, and nearly dropped it. Shades! No wonder that... thing believes it's his! Inside the box were three tiny, perfectly formed, dwarves.

this was it! I'd been sent into this godforsaken place for petty kidnapping! I was disgusted, with myself and the man who had hired me. I'd done some pretty bad things but never anything as bad as kidnapping! That was when it hit me, square in the neck. It stung like a wasp on H had bit me in the nuts, only the pain was in my neck. I reached for whatever it was and pulled it out of my neck. I looked down at my hand. I was holding a dart! slowly I fell to the ground and closed my eyes.

As awareness slowly came back to me, I became aware of a recurrent sharp pain in my side. I slowly opened my eyes and looked into the source of the pains - a man was poking me repeatedly in the ribs with a crude, stone spear. I tried to talk but only a croak came out. "Chiba? Ichini chiba?" he said in a querying and none too patient tone. I could only stare at him in bafflement...

Slowly, I awoke in a daze. My vision was blurred, but with the darkness that engulfed me it didn't matter. My head was dizzy, and I tried to collect my thoughts. As my vision slowly began to return, something about the darkness stung at my eyes, and I had to keep them shut. I could hear a rustling around me, and instantly knew it to be three different creatures. I squinted into that painful darkness, trying to make out the figures now circling me, and though my eyes failed me, my mind knew exactly where I was, though it didn't dare believe it.

My excuse this time is merely that you're all bastards.  One letter off.  One!  C to D, it's a simple mistake, and yet I hope you burn in bloody pus-spewing hell for all eternity for this transgression.

Sorry... We're perfectionists... =). And if you say bloody pus-spewing hell, are you saying hell will be spewing bloody pus, or that hell is bloody and spews normal, whitish pus?

 Erm, back to story then...

I slowly surveyed my surroundings, hoping I would glean something-- anything that would allow me to deny the undeniable: I was in the Mal' Tom camp. Back where the whole god-damn business started. Damn me. It was at this moment that the creatures around me finally registered in my brain. Oh... no...

They were twisted beings with tortured souls and they did not look too pleased with me! After awhile it slowly began to dawn on me, though perhaps it was so terrfying that part of me did not believe it. I was in the box!

I tried to clarify the situation, I made a box shape with my hands and asked,"Box? Chiba? Box?"
The guard grimly nodded, "Chiba." he said and indicated the world around us, "Chiba." he said again, also making a box shape with his hands.
My worst fears were confirmed, we were inside the box.

Chiba meant not, but even so there was no mistaking the room for a box, And so I continued even though I did not speak the langauge. "Chiba box? rhiba? nibo?"
