There arent that many that impress my as much as Ryan did (I am a stickler for realism so obviously the bar is set pretty high by Ryan).  I thought enemy at the gates wasnt that bad, nor was Pearl Harbor (yes the new one) despite its Hollywood-esque love story, the majority of that movie was Historically accurate (watch the History Channel.) And yes you have the oldies, Patton was great, and Battle of the Buldge.  The olny thing that erks me about those movies is the tank selection (once again with the realism) if you didnt already notice all tanks in both these movies were 60-70 era Patton Tanks (I think thats their names) what was behind that?  Can any of you history/movie buffs enlighten me on that one.

How about others?

Later Fellas.

I heard that Untergang (Downfall) is a very good movie, but i haven't seen it. I find the idea of Germans making a WW-2 movie very interesting, because only a German could portray those events so accurately. The movie is about Hitlers last days in his bunker, when he was sipping champagne while the people of Germany were fighting for their lives in Berlin... Icarus405

..... Yeah sure, I have seen it, and I can tell you that that is not the case.

Anyways, its a very good movie. In german perhaps, but for me as dutch thats no problem at all. And hey we got subtitles for a reason. If you haven't seen it yet, go and watch it. Very well played

Der Untergang (The Downfall) I think it's a great movie that tries to show everyone that Hitler and the nazi officers were humans too but the movie donesn't try to redeem them.

Ahh yes, I did just see A Bridge Too Far about a month ago, pretty solid WW2 movie very good acting! and decent action sequences (pretty realistic historically from what I have seen about Market Garden).

I will look up Downfall and try to get it (maybe on Amazon)

Thanks guys.

I saw Windtalkers on TV last sunday and it wasn't very good (i wasn't hoping on that anyway) but the battle scenes were decen't, except that when a tompson fired, the bullet spray looked like it came from a minigun. And when a grenade exploded, it looked like a bazooka round went off and when a bazooka round went off, it looked like a small tactical nuke exploded. The main concept was good however, about how the Allies used Navahos as radiomen in the Pacific and by so doing, created a code that the Japanese heard, but never understood... Icarus405
i liked it,yeah it wasnt very realistic, but it was a movie better than the average IMO. I have it on DVD

I just joined this union so take my vote for you think its worth. My best choice for a ww ii film would be The Longest Day with john wayne, henry fonda, richard burton, and others. No other film that documented the great war on such a large scale did a better job with historical accuracy as well as putting all characters in realistic perspective to the main goal of the operation.

That wasn't a movie. Anyway, it was co-produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, and filmed in the same sepia and greyed-out tones as "SPR".

Best WWII War movie? "Das Boot" I would have to say. The authenticity is so "in your face" that the set of the U-boat is a War Memorial attraction in Germany. The actors weren't even aloud out of the sub for the entire days of shooting. They look greay around the gills for a dams good reason. Also check out Sam Peckinpah's "Cross of Iron" too. It was the first "modern" war movie (there was actually, heavens forbid, BLOOD in it, and Sam did love his blood"!

"Black Hawk Down" was as confusing as the book, still good though. "Band of Brothers" is NOT a movie, and it was co-produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks (who directed an episode) so really, it's a follow-up to "SPR". The Aussie movie "Kokoda" is crap, even though as an Aussie I support Australian Film. It's okay for the soldiers to be confused (where is the enemy?) but the audience is constantly asking each other questions through the film. "Did he accidently shoot his mate, or was it the Japanese? Wasn't he killed?" etc. "Downfall" is top-draw. and if you liked  it get a hold of the DVD "Blindspot" which is a 90 minute interview with the secretary from whom the film was based. A new film about Hitler is in production right now starring the lead detective from "Inspector Rex" (popular German show where Rex is a dog who solves crimes for the police). "Conspiracy" with Stan Tucci and Kenneth Brannagh about the weekend at General Heydrich's estate where they discussed the legalities of "the final solution" is a very good movie. "A Bridge Too Far" is a perfect example of a movie that got made despite everyone believing it couldn't be done. Ira Levine was a one-in-a-million Producer. He took a thousand risks with this film (eg. when Steve McQueen showed no interest, he gave the part to a little known actor  by the name of Robert Redford, which the studio argued against), and with no CGI you can imagine handpainting all but 3 Douglas DC3's (or as you Yanks call 'em, C-47's). "We Were Soldiers" is a great early Vietnam War movie (wish Mel would ditch that phoney American accent), but Australian film "The Odd Angry Shot" really grasps the whole craziness of the time at home and in-country (along the lines of "Catch 22"). "Dark Blue World" is a European/RAF air war movie, with the same sort of love triangle as "Pearl Harbour", but much better done (not that that would be difficult). "Patton" was tops too.The Russian film "The Last Battle" about the tank battle at Kursk is great too, if you can get a hold of it. I got my copy from England. Anyway, Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!!!

"Enemy At The Gates" is a good film, though historically inaccurate.eg.:The stakeout to shoot Major Konings took place over 5 days. Zaitsev and Kulikov (who was not shot by Konings' as in the film) waited for him in a foxhole until Danilov (no friend of Zaitsev's) joined them and was shot in the shoulder when he stood up. On the 4th to 5th day, Kulikov raised his helmet, which was shot, then stood up yelling he'd been hit. Konings' raised his head and Zaitsev drilled him between the eyes. Sgt. Tania Chernova WAS Zaitsev's lover, but believed him killed (he was grievously wounded, not her) at Stalingrad. She learned he had not died, but not until 1969, when he was already married to someone else.

I guess having a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Military History helps quite a bit. Graduating Thesis was on Pearl Harbour, and how it was no surprise attack, but a calculated move on the parts of F.D.R. (who wanted IN the war, but his country was split 50/50 on the idea) and Winston Churchill (who NEEDED the USA in the war). Having access to the "Magic" (Japanese Code) intercepts and transcripts of interviews with Tricycle (the Australian Triple-Agent) helped a lot. As General George C. Marshall said to his staff following the attack, "Gentlemen, this goes to the grave with us". Better check out the window now for men in black suits and Ray Bans.

Try the German film "Stalingrad". Has the same sepia/grey-toned effect and is jarring in its' bluntness of war's effect on human psyches. I enjoyed "Band of Brothers" but more for its' great ensemble cast than its' story. And hey, the US didn't win WWII by itself. Europeans don't pull punches in their war movies. Try the Russian TV series "PQ18" about the Allied convoy destroyed by a U-boat wolf-pack .

Oddly enough, it was called "Midway" (1976) and starred Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda (Adm. Nimitz), Glenn Ford, Harold Halbrook, Robert Mitchum (Adm. "Bull" Halsey) etc. The days of the Blockbuster! Directed by Jack Smight and with music by an up-and-coming composer by the name of John Williams. Most of it was rubbish, but the mounting tension as the USN searched for the Japanese carriers was well done, as were the air battles (if you can stand watching Cliff Robertson in an open cockpit Dauntless and not a hair strand moving). But hey, that was the '70's. Awful to look at now, but back then these movies rocked. I saw it at the drive-in as a kid and loved it.

It would be interesting to see what you guys would see as a "pro-war" or "war-is-an-adventure" war movie and an "anti-war" war movie. In the former I would place "We Dive At Dawn", "Pearl Harbour", "Battle Of Britain", "Enemy At The Gates", "Black Hawk Down" and yes, even "Saving Private Ryan". You only have to ask recruiting centres how the percentages go up after these films are released. In the latter I would put "Gallipoli", "Platoon", "Stalingrad", "The Beast" (Russian tank in Afghanistan), "Paths Of Glory" (WWI, I know), "Kokoda", "The Thin Red Line", "Saints And Soldiers", etc. That ought to stir the pot up a bit!!!

To head-off some arguments, particularly about "SPR", who can say they saw the film, and didn't want to play "Medal of Honour" or "Call of Duty" (the Russina section became very popular with those who enjoy "Enemy At   The Gates"). But, Vietnam-based FPS's (apart from being mostly a load of bullcookies) don't have nearly the same support, and often give rise to many racially-based complaints in games forums. "Black Hawk Down" sent many of us after "First To Fight" and "Full Spectrum Warrior". However, although it isn't a FPS, "Silent Hunter III" is enjoyed by those of us who 'enjoy' "Das Boot" and want to re-live the tension, fear and rush of excitement at sinking a ship then being hounded by destroyers and escaping them.  Ta Ta, off for tea and medals.

"Pearl Harbour"??? Seriously? It nearly ruined Josh Hartnett's career (who cares about Ben Affleck). Without CGI it would have sunk without a trace. Want a good movie about Pearl Harbour and the Doolittle raid, you need two. "Tora Tora Tora" and "30 Seconds Over Tokyo". "Das Boot" is an exceptional war movie. The Director's Cut makes a huge difference, as does watching the film in German with sub-titles, rather than the dubbed version. It is based on Lothar Gunther Bucheim's novel, but the journalist in the film on board the U-Boat is actually fact. Bucheim based the story on his experiences as a journalist aboard a U-Boat in WWII.
