2006 Dodge DurangoBig and beefy with luxo-tech interior. Our week with the Hemi-powered beast.by Steven Horn

April 25, 2006 - Dodge has been mopping up its image lately and currently has a bevy of hot looking cars and trucks on the scene, going after a much younger set of buyers than in recent years. I am in the market for a new ride and am juggling my decision between a Dodge Charger and the Acura TL. I never would have thought Dodge would have been in the running for my dollars, but having spent some time behind the wheel of a Charger and falling in love with that new signature Dodge look, I find myself sitting awake at night mulling the pros and cons of each vehicle. For me, it's always been a question of quality (or the perception of quality) and it hasn't been something I've associated with the Dodge brand through personal experience. But that's old thinking, pre-Charger, pre-Durango thinking.

The very first question I was asked by countless friends and strangers when I was rolling in Dodge's 2006 Durango Limited 4X4 HEMI was "Wow, it must be expensive to fill up." Well, yes, of course it is. The Durango and other vehicles in its class and curb weight aren't meant to compete in the arena of MPG. The Durango and trucks like it are massive machines meant to seat eight, crawl through rough roads, haul your boats or assorted toys, and cushion and pamper the occupants. As gas crawls well into the $3.50 range for premium unleaded here in California, consumers are intensely focused on gas pricing and vehicles that will ease the kick to their wallets. It's too bad that a vehicle as nice as the Dodge Durango will not get a second (or even first) glance by people who only months before would have fallen in love with this utilitarian, competent, competitively-priced, and satisfying ride.

Since we're on the subject of gasoline, the Durango is classified as a "special purpose" vehicle and marks 14 and 18 MPG city/highway respectively. Much of that slurpage comes from the massive V8, 5.7L HEMI powerplant. Never once did I want for power, even trudging up into the mountains or merging onto the freeway. Having all of that power at the ready is a comforting feeling when you are piloting a vehicle as high-profile as the Durango. The engine sounded quite nice, especially when being put through the paces on an on-ramp. It's a muffled bit of awesomeness.

How can a truck look both cuddly and overtly aggressive at the same time? By a peculiar trick of the designer's pen, the 2006 Dodge Durango has that very feel. The fascia is defined mostly by Dodge's now signature four-square grill and appears to jut out menacingly, aided by cleverly designed headlamps and a raised/curved hood that just screams red meat. As you follow the lines down the vehicle, past the ridged wheel wheels, they open up and take on a much softer and bubbly feel. The end result is something that completely works, recalling both the classic Dodge design and other cues seen in the reimagined Charger and awesome looking Magnum. Ours was in Atlantic Blue and is a real eye turner, especially at night.

Inside is where I felt the Durango could use the most work. While the ergonomic layout is clean and crisp, it seemed to me to feel like I was always looking at vast areas of plastic. All of the materials that came into contact with the driver were fine, but enclosing the nav unit and climate controls is a ton of open space. Yes yes, I realize the spacious cabin of the Durango makes such a feel unavoidable, but it still was point of focus for me every time I got into the car. The nav unit was excellent at knowing where in space it is and we had zero problems or dropped directions. A touch-screen would be a brilliant addition to all the button-mashing we had to do to select our destination or changing views as we rolled down the highway.

The ride is exemplary and quite deceiving actually. The Durango's cornering behavior was something completely unexpected. It was startling how glued to the road the Durango felt, even on non-banked curves. Cruising the I-10 between San Bernardino and Ontario, a notorious bumpy pock-marked stretch of road here in the Los Angeles area, was not a problem. One of my passengers described the sensation of being in a floating living room. The second row seating got some use when the IGN editors piled in for a lunch run. Everyone seemed to have ample room, but the third row (with a 60/40 split) is only for the svelte or for those which it was designed: children. The rear-seat entertainment system had a sharp, bright screen and viewing angles were excellent for all in the back cabin.

Our Durango came in with options at $42,705. We added about $5K in options to the base price of $37,310. Key conveniences included the trailer tow group ($455), the "travel convenience group" which is essentially the nav and chrome wheels ($2060), all-wheel drive for $195, the HEMI engine ($995), power sunroof ($850), running boards ($445), Uconnect hands-free phone ($275), and upgraded tires ($135). Dodge is throwing in a rear seat video system valued at $1200 for free.

This makes the Durango a pretty sweet value considering other 8-passengar vehicles in its segment. It's worthy of consideration for families who want a little bit of extra money for the finer things in life: there is a plenty of room for the kids, a back-seat with the requisite video entertainment, and enough snarling good lucks and power to satisfy the driver. The Durango realizes a lot of the new directions Dodge has been going in for the past few years and we think the truck is a must-drive for those in the market for an AWD vehicle with power to spare, massive towing capability (nearly 9000lbs), and a comfortable cushiony ride.
