Yeah but with most wrestlers it's what you say on the mic is what makes you over. Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Mick Foley. None of them are like Benoit in the ring, but they were so good on the mic. That's why people liked them.

In the grand scheme of things, mic work. Mic work draws people in, but you've gotta at least be a decent worker or you'll wear thin quickly. Once people get bored of your on-screen character, they're either gonna look elsewhere or tune out altogether.

You gotta be good on the mic to be constant main event material. You need to be good in the ring as well. Guys that are way above average in the ring (Benoit, Shelton etc.) will get their runs, but never for lengthy time periods. Guys who are good on the mic usually get the longer runs. Cenas a good example, hes good on the mic, and hes been in the main event for over a year. But it shows that ring work incorporates also, just look at him now with half his former fan base.

Being good on the microphone is not a skill that every wrestler has nor it is one, that you can train somebody for, you have to be a natural at being a good talker to be good on the mic in front of thousands of people in an Arena.

Take Ted Dibiase and Jake Roberts for instances, both guys were really great at working the mic and knew how to really relate to the crowd on the mic and coud draw the ire of the crowd

After both of them stopped Wrestling, they are also involved in giving speeches and Ted Dibiase is a minister now and if you watch Jake's DVD from last year, you realize he is every bit as good at talking about stuff, as he was when he was on the mic, when he competed

Mic skills. A lack of technicality in the ring can be more than made up for in charisma and mike skills. I like a good wrasslin' match, but in the end, if I'm entertained it works for me.

I believe it's a mixture of both that makes you into a main eventer. You need the mic skills to have that image that gets you into the main event, and once you're there you need the in ring abilities to keep fans interested. That's why you can never have just one and be great, Cena can show you that, losing most of his fans because he's deterriorated in the ring.
