Well I always play new games on Normal difficulty.
One good tip that probably alot of Doom 3/former Doom 3 players will have used is this: when you come across the demon marines, get their attention (by firing your weapon or simply by them spotting you) and hide behind a wall untill they come to you, then you can take them out easily by surprise with the shotgun.
edit: If you come across the demon marines within good shotgun range at the moment of confrontation, then there's probably more chance of getting hurt if you run and hide. Hiding is only good if you hear them coming or if they are at a great distance from you.
wait until its about 11pm. then turn your lights off and play this game in the dark. also it helps if you turn the volume on the t.v. up alot.
warning... dont do that if you are prone to seizures. games do cause them.

Here's a list of FPS's I would recommend from my own experience:
Halo: Combat Evolved
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect
Darkwatch
Far Cry Instincts (not Evolution)
King Kong
I can't recommend any tactical shooters, but other game types I would are:
Tomb Raider: Legend
Hitman: Blood Money
Conker: Live and Reloaded
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
