Anyone know where I might be able to pick one of these things up locally from a store? I just got a brand new 32 inch HDTV, and the picture looks like crap on the standard AV cable. I know these are out of production, I've looked at eBay and what not, but if I can drive out and luckily get one I'd rather do that. Don't hate me for not having a 360 yet!!!

my advice, if you only have an original Xbox, play it on a SDTV. Most Xbox games dont even support 480p. so "hd cables" will not really make old xbox games look better than what they should look like.

fyi, the new 360 only costs 349.99 , or if you dont want one yet, then the cables you want are the Xbox VGA cables or Component cables for slightly better picture than standard rca composite cables. try Radio Shack. They still carry stuff for PS2 and Xbox1.

Thanks for reply. How much better is 480p over 480i? I have several games compatible with 480p. But yeah it looked MUCH better on my old SDTV like you mentioned. I can probably get a third party hd wire at Target or something. Do you think they will work just as fine as Microsoft's?

Called a few radioshacks, they only have the cables for the new systems.

I've seen component cables that are universal for PS2 and Original Xbox at best buy. They were an off brand, but only ran $10 or $15. I have my xbox hooked up with component cables, I actually had to turno off 480p, 720p and 1080i because it made some games way to dark. I couldn't find my way around a cave in Prince of Persia: The two thrones until I turned off hi def support. So I guess you can say there is a difference.

Thats the other thing. Would the monster component cable for instance, make a difference on an HDTV? Or should I just focus on getting my hands on one of the HD AV Packs?

my experience is that cables are just cables. no need to shell out $80. Use the saved money towards a game.

Just to let you know about 95% of xbox games support 480p and even a few support 720p. I use the x2vga+ vga adapter to play my xbox games on my pc monitor at 480p and it looks way sharper then on an sdtv.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I did a little googling, and this here monster component cable will give the same results as the HD AV Pack offered by Microsoft. It retails for $50 but there are several on ebay for $20 or less including shipping!

Thanks again!

I use those, they are freakin' awesome. Really long too. I tested them on my brothers 480p TV vs. the standard RCA cables and they really make the colors more crisp.

Yeah, using the standard AV video cable that comes with the xbox on my HDTV looks real bad. All blurry and ratched, colors are off. I hope this cable does the works, and it should.

Not true, I've been using my XBOX on a CRT PC monitor for years now and still do! There's actually only a handful of games that don't support 480p (which is NOT high definition BTW, it's EDTV), mostly the early launch titles and it does make them look a lot better than on a SDTV (480i). I use the X2VGA+ adapter though. I know that the MS branded HD cables are a hard item to come by. Trust me I looked. :) I didn't finally buy this Monster Cable brand component cable, but wound up going back to the VGA adapter.

This is the newest iteration of the X2VGA adapter. Mine's the older version X2VGA+. It works extremely well.

I am really confused about the component cable deal. I bought a set of Universal component cables from GameSpot, for Xbox360, XBox and PS2. PS2 and 360 work great. But my Xbox (Version 1.6) would only work on the composite connection on this same set. (Cable Set has the three Component, 2 Stereo and a yellow for composit (Mad Catz Legacy)). Doing a little research I find that you have to have the HD AV Pack or do some jumpering on the motherboard. Just having component cables won't work. Do you guys who are just using component cables have a modded unit? Found a HD AV Pack on Ebay for 9.95 plus 9.95 shipping (20 dollars sounds like a steal as hard as they are to come by). Should have it in the next couple of days, will let you know how it all works out. I have a PS2 Slim (79001) and the XBox I bouught used from Gamespot for 60 bucks, the price of a new game for the 360 or the PS3, hard to turn that down. Actually find I play the Xbox more then the PS2. New to gaming, trying to learn how to play games.......bought my son a PS3 for Christmas and he has been making me look silly playing against him. So I bought a PS2 then the XBox so that when I go over to his house, I can give him some competition. Now don't snicker at this old man, (64 years old) playing games!!!!!

No my unit is not modded. It sounds like he just sold you a normal pair of component cables. For this, you WILL NEED the HD AV Pack, since your cable does not have a connection to the back of the xbox like the monster cable I linked to above. Connect your pack to the xbox, and then your component cables (one end to tv, other end to the pack). That's why I bought the monster cable, no need for the HD AV Pack at all. (I've seen some HD AV Packs that ARE coupled with a set of cables as well).

Beware of 3rd party brands as well. I almost bought one off ebay as well, but a lot of them are made from third parties and not Microsoft. You said something about a yellow video cable? Component cables use the green, red, and blue input jacks on your tv or AV receiver.

So as far as modding, and the HD AV Pack being a must needed item. The answer is no. Unless your in your situation with a set of cables that need a connection to the xbox.
