Both have there strengths and weaknesses. In the end, most people are gonna say GTA cause Scarface is gonna be "a knock off of GTA" Me personally GTA San Andreas set the bar for open ended games. But Scarface IMO could have been great competition for GTA if it weren't for a few things. The things they had Tony doing, he would never have ever done. Important things were done with a gold swing meter. The hours of pointless grinding just get to another part of the game to continue didn't help either. Those really hurt Scarface IMO, and would have made it great if those were fixed up before they actually sold the game.

Scarface has a lot that GTA does not have, but GTA has much more that Scarface does not have... GTA is clearly better than Scarface, at least I think so.

I look at it from a different perspective.  See, Scarface isn't a GTA knockoff.  It's structured differently, it plays differently.  And Tony's a much different character.

GTA's strengths are world size and things to do.  Problem is, Vice City's themost stable of the bunch.  And while it's a solid game, I require my action games to haev a proper aiming system.  Auto-aim is very unsatisfying to me (which is one of the things I absolutely loathe about Halo and a few other console shooters).  And railing prostitutes for health got old pretty quick.  If you read my review about what I think of the GTA games, their bugs and crappy mechanics (other than driving, that at least is rock-solid excluding GTA 3) are what killed them.  I was also disgusted by SA's pool minigame.  The screwed the english mechanics up; sidespin is totally backwards.  I play pool twice a week or more, I know what I'm talking about.

I prefer Scarface because I like the way it plays better.  I like the boss structure, vs. GTA's b*tch structure.  I like the random missions even though they're pretty much the same, and yet not. And I don't recall excessive grinding; the grinding is only excessive because someone was trying to do too much too soon ;)  The game is beatable in under 30 hours, and I'd bet it's beatable somewhere close to 20.

Scarface did have some issues, though, yeh, like grenade launcher mechanics (50 ft. range?  No.)  However, it was more stable, had a great aiming system and ultimately put you in control of your own empire.

Personally, I think Mercenaries is much better than both despite the bugs.

As much as I would like to say Scarface, my decision goes with GTA.  The answer is kinda obvious.

How could it not be definitely GTA: VC.

Scarface tried to remake the movie in game form, but Grand Theft Auto: Vice City had already beaten them to the punch. Complete with Hector's chainsaw massacre hotel room. The whole games basically about coke n' $$$$ ala Scarface. Oh and power, and the women lol. Then you get the women

I need to play Scarface now.

GTA is great for the freedom (which you pointed out), which is why i still play it, well after beating it (beat it almost 2 years ago).  The cons here & there don't bother me, really.  The graphics are almost trademark GTA, like i'd be saddened if they were better (although i am in no way upset about how beatiful GTA IV looks in that teaser trailer).  And i still play my NES from time to time so everything nowadays is an improvement (which is funny since the arcade games in SA are reminiscent of NES & Atari).  I'm not so picky about the little things, either, like the pool minigame.  Rockstar obviously focused more on some things than others and still managed to make a great game.  Can't be mad at a good company trying to make a few bucks.

Funny you should bring up Mercenaries when no one else has yet.  That is a great game, too, although it has a slightly heightened difficulty level compared to the GTA series, imo.  I still haven't beaten it and i've owned it since near launch (although i admittingly hardly ever play it).  Best part about that game is the exaggerated physics.  C4 under a jeep is sheer classic comedy and sniping a pilot through his helicopter THEN having the chopper land perfectly upright, ripe for the taking, is ridiculous... but in a good way.

I have to go with GTA. I rented Scarface and after about 20minutes i hated it. Almost as much as The Godfather. If I hadn't already played GTAIII, VC, and SA I wouldnt have been so critical.

In general Scarface is just a lame attempt to make a "GTA type game." Scarface may be a decent rental for some people, but I was not impressed.

however, the "insult button" was pretty funny. If you've played the game, you'll know what i mean.

p.s.  BTW I did not like Mercenaries a whole lot, but If i saw it for $15 or less id get it.

Yeah, that insult button is hilarious. The thing that makes him able to rage.
i enjoyed that game a little bit. I mean walking around at times just talking to people was cool, but the adventure and driving aspects of the game don't compare to GTA.
