um there is no problem at all with each drive. its just the types of dvds it can't read. and those dvds can only be played if your xbox is modded. so go read an faq at gamefaqs

Change your drive to a Samsung ... why not. The xbox is dead so who cares about warranty problems now. If you want the thing to keep going you're going to have to learn how to fix it. There are plenty of direction sites and it's actually pretty easy (no soldering) with the right screw drivers. Could get a nasty shock though ... just follow directions.

My Xbox has a Tompson drive, I know because I have recently had the laser replaced by a console repair company in the UK. Mine seems to load Halo 2 just fine. I bought my Xbox in 2005 though I think.

Cool, I might start modding my Xbox then, but I'd never go online though....

Mine still works, but its just that the disc tray gets stuck sometimes.... other than that it works like a charm!

I replaced my Thomson drive with a Hitatchi. I found it on eBay for 30 dollars.

I was going to replace the drive myself, but when I read all the instructions I decided against it even though I have built several pc's.

The drive itself was going to cost £30 ($60) then I needed to buy a set of torx head screwdrivers. Then I found out that since the Xbox had its PSU inside the unit, there was a potential for a fatal electric shock! This put me off completely.

Woke up this morning and threw a new drive in my xbox ... took ten minutes ... still had time to play a mission.
