rite so i plugged in my component cables in and changed te switch to hdtvwent to the dash board and in display options i only got a 480p output when i selected 1080i it blanks out and returns after 10 seconds

My tv does the same thing. The only resolutions it plays in is 480p and 1080i, I can't play in 720p.

I've heard of this before with tvs that don't support 720p, try updating the console, or maybe consider the VGA cable.

If your HDTV is an older one, it may only have one "DTV" component input and the rest of the component inputs may be limited to 480p. I have an older Mitsubishi 55" RP from around 2002-2003, and its two "Component" inputs only support 480p. Then, there is a "DTV" component input that supports up to 1080i.

If your TV has a DTV input, plug the 360 in there, or just try the different component inputs.

Yes the 360 supports 1080i, if the screen goes blank then your tv isn't supporting it. make sure you are on the HD setting which I'm sure you did. and only use the component cables. I run in 1080i currently with a launch system.

I mean, when it comes to TV stuff.. there's a HUGE difference between watching NFL football on Fox in 720p versus NBC in 1080i. I can't stand seeing all the digital blocks and crap with the 1080i, and the 720 just looks so much cleaner, but I'm not sure how this translates into HD stuff.

Fast paced stuff like shooters and action titles will look better in 720p where as slower games will probably look a little sharper in 1080i. P(rogressive) scan means a full 60 refreshes per second for every line on the screen. I(nterlaced) means that every other line is refreshed 30 times per second. 1080i is higher resolution but slower refresh than 720p.
