Hey, I just got the HDMI cable and it works great...ULTRA SHARP! Now, I was wondering if the XBOX 360 can play regular DVD's in 1080p upscaled mode, or do I have to settle with 480p?

Hmm thats a good question, I know the HD DVD drive does a great job of upscaling, but to be honost i havent tried the regular drive. I assume it would, the 360 upscales all games despite their native res, are you having trouble getting a DVD to play at 1080p or something?

It upconverts but not to 1080p. Technically a DVD doesn't even hold enough information to be shown in 1080p, so it's 1080i or 720p at the most.

It only upscales to 480p. I noticed this a while back and didn't want to be bothered by it so I went out and bought a 1080p upconvert player. If you have the extra cash I would recommend getting one.

360 DOES upscale DVD movies. Component cables upscales to 720p(or 1080i) and HDMI up to 1080p

Wow at the uninformed people in this thread:?

VGA and HDMI will upscale all the way to 1080p, Component will only go up to 480p. With that said, VGA/HDMI are leaps and bounds better than Component, and the 360 isnt as bad as most people make it to be, but there are better players out there where you will see a difference such as the PS3

Upconverting isnt the same as native, and even then, there are 1080p DVDs such as Terminator 2.

Though dont ask me how good it looks, im guessing not very

It will, but the 360 makes such a horrible DVD player that it's not worth it. Cheap $20 Walmart players are better and don't produce as much jittering or artifacts.

I could use my PC to upconvert, but Power DVD 8 Plus that came with it dosnt support upconversion for DVDs'. They want me to fork over $99 to version 9 and that will do that trick.

Thanks for the info, I guess I'll try with my PS3 then, because my 360 doesnt have HDMI.

Yeah the PS3 is a lot better, use that, its one of the best Blu-Ray players on the market too.

Also, VGA will upscale almost as well

why does everyone say HDMI is so much better than component there is hardly a difference my new samsung tv plays 1080p through component and it looks great I will agree though the PS3 is the superior player though.

Read my post, when it comes to DVDs, Component does not even upscale:?

As for HDMI vs VGA vs Component, if you know your stuff and can calibrate your TV, each one makes a huge difference

Component - Great colours, good controls, however jaggies are way more apparent

VGA - Colours not as good as Component but still good colours, much cleaner image, however real lack of controls hurts especially when it comes to colours

HDMI - Simply the best, best colours, full controls (more controls than Component), least jaggies, most accurate image

Again, it all depends on your TV and your settings, but HDMI gives you the ability to make most of them. As for the PS3, if it makes no difference then how does it do so on the PS3:?

i was agreeing with the dvd player in the ps3 being better its like saying this sony is better than this samsung dvd player nothing to do with which cables you use. The difference between component and HDMI isnt strkingly different. Im not talking about upscaled image. Im sorry if I took that part the wrong way but you lead me to believe VGA/HDMI were leaps and bounds better overall. I never disagreed about the upscaling. That is why i use my ps3 for dvds.

The 360 won't upscale on the component outputs (comes out as 480p), and it will on the VGA and HDMI outputs, HOWEVER... ...technically component and VGA are the same signal type, they just use a different connector. A $2 VGA/D-Sub to RCA/Component connector should do the trick, or if your TV already has a VGA or HDMI input just use that. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=tLs&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&q=VGA-F+to+RCA&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=1280&bih=681&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=17339665216967943038&sa=X&ei=myvkTcPyJMyUtwf9k4ypBw&ved=0CEIQ8gIwAw

The 360 makes a pretty good DVD player I think. And yes, it does upscale, but not to 1080p. It makes my DVD's look a lot better on my HDTV than my regular one does at least.
