My 19" Samsung TV has a native resolution of 1440x900. When the new dashboard update is out and supports this resolution, how will I know if the resolution has been fixed? I'm running my 360 via a HDMI cable and writing looks jagged and a little bit blurry. Wil there be a new HD mode (900p) or will my 360 be still on 720p but look crisper than what it does now?

I certainly hope so, because the only way I can describe it now is that on 720p it just doesn't look right.

I dont think hdmi can do any other resolutions then 720p, 1080i and 1080p so i think you will need a vga cabel to do that resolution

On VGA, the Xbox will Support 1440x900 and a whole lot of other 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions. On HDMI, it will stay at 720p, 1080i or 1080p, because these are the standardized HD Resolutions.

"New display support. Because you asked for it, we are adding 16X10 over VGA or HDMI, and support for 1440x900 or 1680x1050."

Surely it can't be just over VGA?

The text is slightly jagged/blurred and it's nothing to do with the TV; It's the 360. I just don't know whether to use HDMI and see if the image quality gets better after the update or just get the VGA cable and KNOW that 1440 x 900 will DEFINITELY be supported.

So, you think I should go with HDMI and see what happens come this update or get the HD VGA cable?

If I did get the VGA cable, could I leave the red and white audio connectors out of the TV and just plug in my speakers via the headphone socket or would I have to plug the red and white cables in THEN plug my PC speakers in via the headphone socket?

They are actually giving you the option for those 16:10 resolutions when NXE rolls around

I was really hoping for 1920x1200, even if it was just black bars

Not that I know of (I have a Samsung SyncMaster 932MW). What do you mean by 'They are actually giving you the option for those 16:10 resolutions when NXE rolls around'?. Does that mean that even if I am using HDMI, you will be able to select the resolution? (Like VGA/PC's)

I may just get a HDMI cable and see what happens come the update. I hope they add a new HD setting or something because I don't see any other way how 16:10 can be supported via HDMI if there isn't a new HD setting, such as 900p.

Bearing in mind I want the best quality HD image and be able to play in 1440 x 900 should I go for:

- HDMI Cable

- DVI to HDMI Cable

- VGA Cable

- Composite Cable

Well, HDMI or DVI will give you the best picture since it's digital. DVI is just HDMI without the sound. If your monitor has HDMI, go with that.

But I heard that with a DVI to HDMI cable, I will be able to choose the 1440x900 resolution after the update, unless they add an extra HD setting for HDMI?

If it does it for one, it should do it for all. Regardless if you use an HDMI to HDMI cable or an HDMI to DVI cable, the 360 only sees HDMI on it's end. I'm guessing that all 3 (HDMI, DVI and VGA) will get the new 1440x900 and 1680x1050 options when the update hits.

Well when the NXE does roll around, congrats on getting better graphics, but I will still be playing on my old Samsung 26" SDTV. The reason I can't switch is because there are so many technical things with the HDTV and the 360. All this talk about VGA and HDMI and resolution and 1600:900 or something. I have no clue at all! I would love to get about a 23" HDTV. But won't know nearly as much stuff about it and won't know what I need for the best graphics and quality etc .....etc...

To answer your question, I personally would wait, the announcment says it will be supported over HDMI, so I would assume it would work. If that doesnt work get the VGA which will be supported most definatly. Hope that helps. to answer your other question, the best picture qulaity comes form HDMI cables, so if it does work for your resolution like microsoft sayd it would, then that would be your best bet. I assume your moniter is VGA? (most moniters that size are) but if its DVi that would work virtually as well as HDMI ( trust me you wont be able to see the difference) same with VGA, the differences between the three cables are very negligible, but do not use component cables as they look noticeably worse. (composite does not support HD resolutions)

Well, my Samsung TV/Monitor has a DVI input, a VGA input, component inputs and a HDMI port. I just hope someone using HDMI has a 16:10 TV so they can tell me if the 1440x900 native resolution of my TV is supported. I have several options, but HDMI would be my first choice, then a DVI to HDMI cable then VGA.

If HDMI doesnt work, DVi to HDMI will not work either. your xbox only can sense the HDMI part of the cable, so it will output in the exact smae manner, so try HDMI, and if that doesnt work use VGA.

I don't know what to believe; I've got people on here saying that 1440x900 will be supported via HDMI, then I've got people on another site saying I won't be able to change the resolution over HDMI and I'd be better off with VGA.

HDMI is measured in 720p, 1080i and 1080p, where as the VGA measures in resoluations. When using an HDMI cable, the HD source will scale the image to whatever resoluation you have set. I.E you can have 720p on a 19in TV or a 42in TV. In reguards to what your saying about it being blurred and jagged, thats normally down the TV not the HD source. I have a 22in PC monitor running at 1360x768 (max res is 1680x1050) and I get very little jaggies.

I really don't know what to do;

  • Get HDMI and hope this dashboard update has an automatic setting for 16:10 TVs
  • Get VGA and just pick the resolution
  • Stick with Component.

Can someone who has the NXE already clear this up please? My HD TV is 1440x900 native, and I'm using an HDMI to DVI cable....so after the update will my resolution be fully supported?

Either way, I'll find out in a few hours...it will be hard to sleep tonight lol.

That would work. I have to do that with my sharp. VGA  and the white red connectors to a Ear phone jack adapter ($5) you could also use the optical cable to the stereo or tv if it has a in.
