i know the 360 plays dvd's. i forgot what it is called but the HD player that is sold seperate really enhances the graphis of the dvd, but does playing dvds on the 360 enhance the picture at all b/c it is a next gen system, instead of playing it on a regular dvd player?

HD DVD players play HD DVDs which have almost no compression to their images and sound while regular DVDs are compressed to fit on the disc. The 360 by itself does not upconvert DVDs or make them look any better, but it you use an HD DVD player with the VGA cables then it does upconvert your DVDs. I strongly recommend an HD DVD player if you have an HDTV. The images are unbelievable.

By the way Band of Brothers will be released in Japan on HD DVD pretty soon which might mean we are going to be getting it fairly soon as well. BoB is the best anything I have ever seen.

You don't need the HD-DVD drive to upconvert DVDs on the 360.  You just need the VGA cable.

I am running through component and my TV has a DVI input.... can I get a VGA-DVI converter and hook up the 360 that way?

A VGA to DVI converter would be expensive.  It would need to take a analog signal and convert it to digital.  If you really want to input DVI, best would be to buy a 360 Elite.  It has HDMI which is digital.  You could just get a HDMI to DVI adapter.

In the end, you would never notice a difference.  Especially with just DVD.

360 is considered one of the worst DVD plays, all up. HDDVD add on is different tho.

The HD-DVD drive does nothing differently as far as DVDs go.  The same crappy code is used to process DVDs.

Sure but the drive itself maybe better which would solve some issues.

the HD DVD player upconverts all SD DVD's to 1080i so yes it does do something to regular DVD's.

It's not the drive it's the resolution....

If you are using VGA, the 360 uses different algorithms to display the image...

The component cable video is limited to 480p...and isn't even rendered properly to the screen...(tons of jaggies at 480p)

When using VGA you get a noticeably improved image and it's just not the up-conversion....color reproduction and contrast are better as well...apparently, many of the filters they use on VGA output are not allowable through component cables, so the video suffers on that output....

So basically for DVD playback, Component sucks and VGA is awesome.
