I have always kept mine vertically. I don't really know why but I guess I just think it vents best this way. It vents straight into a window. (In the summertime and good weather days anyway...)

I've heard that when you have it standing vertically, some of the ventilation holes are blocked. I keep mine horizontal.

Lying down - the massive vent is usually blocked underneath when the thing is upright.

i have mine horizontal. standing up would cover about half the vents. i also recently pulled the metal sheild out from under the top part. i didnt see a need to keep the heat in further.

Horizontal with small wood chips under each small corner just to give it a little more air.

I lay mine horizontally on top of 8 dvd cases. That ensures that the console is properly ventilated and air circulated. Since i've been doing this, I can leave my console on for 8+ hours and it will never get hot. I also cover the vents on the top so that dust can not get in it when I'm not playing it.

I have had my console horizontal for over 2 years now and I haven't had any overheating issues with it.

horizontal and slightly raised up to ensure fresh air can get to it from all sides.

i also have mine elevated off the ground. i used one of those mesh wire paper holding trays and it fits perfect with maximum airflow.

Horizontal. Don't like the idea of my discs being vertical inside the 360, my dog would probably it down too.

Horizontal is best, the largets vent is at the bottom as the top vent is covered by the HDD so when vertical very little heat is diffused.

I have a launch 360 (Jan 06) and one from Feb 09. Both are sitting horizontal and both have little feet that I bought at the hardware store stuck to the underside that lifts them about 1 1/2 inches off the shelf. I've never had a problem with either. So horizontal gets my vote...extra ventilation is good too.

I keep mine vertical, but for ventilation I would imagine horizontal is wiser.

Horizantal for sure. On a side note: You wouldn't want it to fall now would you? My friend was playing MW2 while the 360 was standing up, it fell over and the disc inside got destroyed.

It's fine either way. When I got my 360, I kept it vertically, but a few times the disc wouldn't stay in the tray properly, because I would get an error message while playing a game, then be returned to the dashboard. I decided to sit it horizontally, and everything is fine. It runs really cool too

Personally I currently have to keep mine vertical, as my current entertainment stand simply does not have the room for it to be horizontal. It keeps it in line with the HD-DVD add-on drive (which is white, compared to the Black Elite unit I have now), and thankfully the Zephyr model I have seems to stay reasonably cool even on long play sessions, so I'm happy there.

no I know what hes talking about. between the rear dual-fans and the white (or black if you have an elite) casing, there is a metal sheild with holes punched in. I installed my own talismoon fans and soldered them to a 9V source on the motherboard so they suck out a lot more hot air. On the site which directed me how to do that, I read that taking out the metal shield would increase air flow by 5%

Yeah the heat sinks are on the motherboard over the CPU and GPU not under the casing, also by opening your console and tearing the inner microsoft sticker to do so you have voided your own warranty.... smart ;)
