This doesnt qualify as the RRoD or a broken 360 so I didnt put it in the sticky (plus stuff that goes in there is rarely responded to). My 360 about last week just started to overheat constantly but only for certain games such as Burnout Paradise, Forza and The Darkness (I can play Rock Band, Mass Effect or Halo 3 for hours and nothing happens :S) SO I was wondering if anyone had any tips as to how to make the 360 stop overheating. Should I get a fan or something because its in a well-ventilated area and has its own power socket. Help would be appreciated thank you!

or better yet, lift the 360 off the floor.....under each bumper of the 360, I have a small wood block so the bottom surface of the 360 is raised about two inches off the surface of the table

it could be that your cooling fans are failing. My friend had that problem, he got the RRoD soon after. Just ring M$ and tell them that you have the RRoD and they'll send you a replacement.

Believe it or not, suspending the power brick in mid-air solves most overheating issues.

What do you mean by overheating? Is it shutting off or freezing? Because then you might need to get a new one. To keep mine cool I keep it in a well ventalated area off of the carpet with the power box on a box.

It just shuts down randomly. I just tried vacuuming the dust out of all the vents in the 360 and it seems to be making a lot less noise. I guess I'll see how this works. ANd then ill try suspending the powerbrick Thanks again everyone :P

If it's shutting off then you should probably replace it. Seems like RROD will be on its way soon.

It's scary because the same things happening to me, and I've tried all of the above. So far I've found the same thing that some games I can play for hours and some I can't also I know that it's my power brick (psu) thats overheating. The games that I've tried to play and crash (due to overheating two red lights) are Fable 2 and Call of Duty 5, again Halo 3 works fine and so does Fallout 3 by the way Fable 2 seems to work fine when you run it from the disk.

Make sure you try vacuming the powerbrick too. Get all the nooks and crannies. Also take out any USB or extra things you have plugged into your 360 ex. iPod or charger kit, mic etc. Free up some HDD space and delete any movies demos or game files you dont play. I havent tried to do this but I hear GeekSquad will clean them quite well, possibly free of charge depending on the employee. Make sure your disks are clean and you lazer is also. Avoid extended use and take breaks. Unplug components and plug them back in. Good Luck im having the same problems.

when I just purchased my xbox 360, more than a year ago, had the same problem of overheating and I try placing the brick in different positions, and what I get is to scratch my cds so after one month of interrupting my gaming every two hours for cooling I bought an Intercooler NYKO (http://www.nyko.com/nyko/products/?i=71) I live in Peru and temperature here rise over 33°C (aprox 95°F) now I have no problems even when playing 12 hours straight or more... .

good luck....:D

i am having the same problem. my xbox is a few years old, its been through alot... taking it places, hooking, unhooking, etc. i have a feeling mine is about die.. the disk tray sticks sometimes, most of the time it reads disks as dvd's (its been doing it about a year) and most of all my overheating issue is pissing me off. it's half a ring.. i dont know what to do. i cant afford another xbox so if i lose this i will be very upset! is there anything we can do? do we just call MS and tell them we need it fixed?

And why he's at it, make sure you get your 360 a nice cool beverage and make sure the temperature is about 65 degrees on the nose, and don't forget to give it massages on a regular. Is it me, or does the 360 need way to many things to keep it running under NORMAL use! After going through so many 360 I've finally got one that's holding up for quite along time so far. Fingers crossed for continued success.

i fixed my 360! microsoft was going to charge me 100 bucks to fix it but i did it myself, i opened it up and inside the silver casing is where the chips, radiator, and the inner cooler is... i found that my radiator was CLOGGED to death and the problem was it couldn't breathe... i fixed it a few nights ago and haven't overheated yet. thank god, i heard your supposed to clean it every couple of months. if you have any questions youtube has some interesting videos on how to take apart your xbox.

Install games and have the AC on. If your place is dusty and/or pet hair then not much you can do as you can't clean inside unless you void the sticker.

keep power supply away from other objects/walls etc,

make sure the 360 it self is not also covered by objects near walls etc ,

pretty much all you can do besides cleaning the vents

A few things you can do mate keep your Console in a well ventilated area, if its in a cabinet or on a carpet move it on top of a coffee table or something Mentioned in this thread before try vacuuming your console, dust is a huge cause of overheating If you feel confident enough to take your console apart, try to clean the insides of your Xbox 360 including the fans. For this, you can use a non-static brush or you can also try spraying a contact cleaner which is very efficient in getting rid of dust on electronic equipments If you are a hard core gamer and play for hours on end you might want to consider giving your console a bit of a rest after every few hours hope this helps :)
