Is there any way to play a 360 on a PC monitor, or do you have to have a TV?

ok, i got a question for you. when ever you switch from PC to 360, what do you do. meaning to you disconnect your pc plug and connect, or is there a bridge thing that could be used...

I'm kind of confused about that too.  I don't think my Monitor has a VGA output, but I'm not exactly sure what a VGA output looks like anyways.  But, at the age my CRT Screen has reached, I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't have one.  Any chance you could bring up a picture of what we're looking for.  Not the cable, the back of the monitor is what I'd like to see.

I'll google image it too.

Yes, I know that I have that sticking out of the back of my monitor, but is there anything that I have to plug into my monitor?  In other words, do I have to plug anything into my monitor, or do I simply have to plug my monitor into the 360?

ahh right gotcha sry, ima lil slow :P

Ok it comes with a few things

Comes with a adapter, its for if your VGA cable doesnt disconnect from the monitor.  So its attached to monitor  then goes into VGA then into PC, it acts like the piece u plug the vga into the pc

If you get what im saying

So you unplug the VGA cable from your PC and place the adapter on, then connect the wire that goes into the xbox to the end of the adapter and should show up on monitor.

But some monitors let u detach both which would be a hassle for CRT's since there huge. So you just detach the one from the monitor the vga, then plug the cable from 360 in, and good to go, no need for a dapter. :)

I know its prolly gunna be confusing, feel free to ask more questions

Ok, lemme get this straight, (and by the way, thank you for your patience),

With this I will also get an adapter which I can use to plug into my VGA so everything will fit together in this manner:

1) VGA into adapter

2) Adapter into Microsoft's VGA HD Cable

3) Cable into xbox 360

4) Other parts of cable into sound (or, could I use headphones?)

Is that about right?

Try this one:

http://www.monitorman.com/ecommerce/store/cart_viewItem.asp?idProduct=52

It's the flat screen, hah!  But I don't know what 720p or 1080i mean, just as long as it works with good resolution at atleast 1024x768

720p and 1080i are the HD resolutions, if the monitor can support those, you will have a better picture and clearer textures and such than with a standard tv. But your monitor is huge in resolution, so u can support the highest i believe on the 360, so HD gaming for you :)

I was thinking about using my 360 with my monitor through this cable but what do you mean by "sound adapter"? I have Logitech PC Speakers X-230s or w/e they are called, and I would like to be able to use those for sound. I do not have a reciever or any special sound equipment however, so I don't understand how I will get sound through these with this cable. I heard somewhere that you could use the sound card from your PC with it, but I don't understand how that would work either. Any help on clearing these sound issues up would be great! Thanks!

You can hook the sound cables from the Xbox 360 VGA cable into an amp or receiver, that is what i have. I bought an extension cord (male and female) and plugged it into my stereo system.

BTW, if your monitor has two inputs, plug your pc on DVI, and VGA for 360. For monitors VGA is much better than component when using the 360. DVI is better than VGA for your computer.

Yeah, like I said I do not have a reciever or any special sound equipment, so I guess I am out of luck :(. I was just unclear on what the poster I had quoted was saying about the "sound adapter" which I hadn't heard of before.

Sorry to jump in, but you are NOT out of luck... All you need is a splitter cable so that your computer and your 360 can "share" your Logitec speakers.... I'll grab some pics and post back so you'll know what to look for... BRB

Ok... First you'll need to pick up on of these:

(if that link doesn't show, I"ll find a different way to post it....)

Still grabbing more stuff for ya...all of these cables are quite inexpensive.

Best Buy should have every piece you'll need.

I'm still trying to get some pics in here for ya.... bear with me.

This is one of them.... We're almost there...

This is the other....

Notice that the "male" ends have 2 black rings around them.  Just in case you aren't familiar with this stuff it is very important.  The cable in the first pic witll connect to your Microsoft VGA Adapter that someone has already shown you.  The second cable will interconnect your speakers (which should look like the "male" end on either of these pics) with your computer and your 360.  The second pic is what is known as a headphone splitter.  It is designed to allow you the run two sets of headphones from one sound source.  It is important to make sure that both of those "female" ends are "stereo", or match up with a "two black ring" male plug.

Please forgive me if I'm making this overly simplistic.  I just don't know where you're at as far as cable jargon goes...  :)

Lemme know if I can answer any more questions for ya...Hope this helps...

Peace

No, you just need an extension Dual Male Dual female cable for the RCA UNLESS you can reach it with the short RCA that the VGA cable has, but I doubt many people are able to reach their PC with those. I got mine for 11 canadian so shouldnt be expensive.

I can't find a link right now but if i really need to i can take a picture of mine.

Wow, thanks a lot for the replies cmerge and Stealth, that was awfully nice of ya! Now the only thing I have to ask before I go out and get this is since Stealth posted that single adapter, is if it is still necessary to go out and get what you posted, cmerge? If I did have the cables with me, I would probably be able to figure out what went where if I reread your post and then fiddled with it a little bit, but I am just a little concerned because according to the link Stealth posted it says that tiny adapter comes with the 360 itself, whereas Stealth said it came with the cables... I am trusting Stealth however because right when I saw the link saying it came with the 360 I ran back into the closet to dig out my 360 box and find a tiny piece I may have neglected, but was unable to find it. Really do appreciate it guys, thanks very much for the help!

EDIT: sorry, was making this post just as you guys were making the answers right before this post. lol, I'll be sure to take a look around Best Buy and find these!

Yea the guy in the guide made a mistake and wrote below it that it did not come with it "UPDATE"

What I have is the Xbox VGA HD cable, VGA into my monitor, RCA outputs into a extension cable, the output of the extension cable into the sound card of my computer. Then I used the guide to make it so it also plays my 360 sound. I can also put it into my stereo system but I prefer my computer speakers usually.

EDIT: Found a link to the extension cable i was talking about; http://www.amazon.com/RCA-Dual-Extension-Cable-ft/dp/B0002ZPK1W

In the Update (in red) in the link Stealth provided it seems to indicate that the small adapter comes with the VGA cables instead of with the 360.

Also, if you plan on playing your 360 while your computer is turned off, you probably won't have any sound using the 10 steps to piping your 360 through your PC.  If your PC is always on when you play then it won't be an issue.

Hope this helps.

Woops, one last thing I forgot to mention although this doesn't fall into the sound department... The resolution of my widescreen 19" monitor is 1440x900. If I were to use the 1360x768 resolution, would it be a stretched image, or black bars?

When you use the VGA cable, you'll get a different set of resolution options in your System Blade.  Just pick the highest one that falls within the range of what your monitor is capable of (1440x900).  Some may look stretched and others won't.  Just pick the one that works best with your monitor.  Good luck!

Will this cable work if your pc monitor has no other connections in the back? Can you just hook up the DVI or whatever its called to the monitor and then hook up to 360?....must be a way..

Is there a port for headphones on the xbox 360, or do you have to plug it into speakers first, and then into headphones?

No no port for headphones on the 360:(.

Also for the person saying "JAGGIES JAGGIES", it depends per monitor. The 360 on my HP w2207 actually looks just as good as on my Toshiba HDTV, if not nicer.

Shouldn't be a problem. My monitor is 1680 x 1050 so it is not a 360 supported resolution, but games and menus look amazing.

Sorry to bump this so late, but I went out to Best Buy and got everything I needed (and nothing extra) on my first try... which is a pretty amazing accomplishment for me considering normally I never get the right thing, or I buy out a whole shelf of things to see which one is the right one, then return the others :p. It is working great! I have it setup through my PC using the 360 VGA Cables, and the splitter + extending cables. Sounds great as well, looks pretty damn good too. Special thanks to cmerge and Stealth-Gunner for the detailed help! Would be glad to help anybody else who is interested in hooking their sound up without a reciever of some type (I saved the packaging to everything, so if anybody needs me to take a pic for reference lemme know). Thanks again you guys. :)
