So recently I've been playing KOTORII, and frequently the two red rings of light are popping up, signalling the internal temperature is too high. However, I've moved my 360 to several different spots, and to no avail, it keeps popping up.

My question is, is it because I'm playing a backwards compatible game? It's happened only once while playing a 360 game (Vegas), and even then, I was able to play it flawlessly since.

My 360 was bought on New Years Day it its first year, but I'm fairly sure its not broken (thankfully), since it seems to function fine with exception to KOTORII.

Do you have it standing up or laying down?

I see alot of problems that arise when the console is played standing up.

So no Intercooler.

Actually, I've had better luck playing it Vertical than Horizontal. But I usually prefer playing it horizontal, but I've tried everything. I've just used the compressed air to clean out the fans, and a bit of dust came out, but not as much as I expected.

I'll update later.

I've always liked being on the safe side with my intercooler (even if it is a bit noisy).  but until someone explains why it makes the 360 overheat... I'm confused.

Aye, mine starting wigging out while playing Halo 2. Got the red rings, that was a week ago. Now it won't even boot. I've tried the Air Duster standing it vertical and horizontal, no avail. I got mine on March 28th of '06.

wow, this is the first time I've seen a topic that 1. has a person knowing that his 360 is overheating with the two red lights and 2. the first topic about this subject period.

Whatever you do, DO NOT get the Nyko intercooler. I can tell you 1st hand that it does more harm than good.

Well its working now, before I couldn't get 5 minutes in without leaving my Xbox off for 3-4 hours. Try compressed air and blow into all the openings.

Gladly. I live in Australia, so being quite hot last summer I thought that purchasing the Nyko intercooler might help. I went and bought one, plugged it in and 3 red lights of death, unplugged everything and tried it again to the same result. Tried it without the intercooler and no red lights. Took it back, was told it was probably faulty so I got a new one, plugged it in and it worked for a couple of seconds and then BAM the red lights AGAIN. Took it back, got my money back, and I am never touching any cooling product which interfers with the 360's power again. Anything that does that can't be good for your 360, even if it does work for you. Researched on the internet and found that those intercoolers have been known for causing an array of problems. Get another brand, one that uses an external power brick or usb.

It is just depends from person to person.  I've never had a single problem with mine.  I know I would never be getting an intercooler if I had seen what people were saying about it.  Good thing I didn't look to see.

I bought an intercooler, the one that fits on the back of the console, and it didn't help me one bit. I still had to get a replacement. The intercooler that fits on the side seems to work pretty good though. It forces air into the vents to cool it down. The Nyko only sucks air out of the back; I don't see how that would help.

I HAD SAME PROBLEM WITH MY INTERCOOLER. (3 RED LIGHTS) COME TO FIND OUT THE POWER CORD WASNT ALL THE WAY PLUGGED IN. SO I LAYED THE SYSTEM HORIZONTALLY AND MADE SURE THE PLUG WAS IN TIGHT AND IVE HAD NO PROBLEMS SINCE. AND MY 360 STAYS WAY COOLER THAN IT DID BEFORE THE INTERCOOLER.

Mine was horizontal, and I double triple checked it was plugged in properly but to no avail, 3 red everytime.

That link leads to the truth about the nyko fan. My 360 used to get so hot I was actually scared to play it for long periods of time. I got the fan and it doesn't even get hot anymore. I used to touch the back and it was so hot I almost couldn't touch it.

I got the nyko and all of that stopped. In all fairness though the nyko fan shown in the ign article has a switch on the back the model I just got(2months ago) doesn't have it. Maybe they made a new model or something but mine works like a charm never had any red lights or problems vertical or horizontal.

I just looked there are two versions of the nyko. The first model had a switch on the back to manually control the fan to on or off. This caused a problem with power division between the x-box and the fan which resulted in errors to the 360. The new model doesn't have a switch and and the power distrubution was corrected. The second model(which i have) works fine. I wouldn't bs you I know how irritating this kinda thing is. Get a nyko and the problem is over.(the second model).
