So I noticed while playing BIA:HH demo that some shadows under the helmets looked funny. like they were composed of dots and not smooth at all. Brushed it off uick but when I went to play GTA 4 i noticed how bad it really was. Now these pictures arent mine but are exactly the same problem I am having except I cant find any mention of this anywhere on the interwebs.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/32644028@N04/

I have tried swapping hdmi cables, switching resolutions, went to component, tv settings. Its really so very distracting to the point that its really hurting the gameplay. The xbox itself is relativly new bcuz i got it in december after my last one got nxeod. Any help is appreciated.

dead link, brah

i would have said your GPU is on the fritz, as is usally the case with graphic issues, but this a relatively new box - though that still doesnt rule out a looming GPU failure. are there any other symptoms?

throw as many games into your box as you can to see if the same symptoms are reproduced across the board. that will at least narrow the cause down to a hardware issue, in which case you can blame the GPU starting to give.

Same ting happens to me but on CoD4.

The Captain Price guy has a shadow that has a shadow that is all Pixilly Squares no Circles. It could be the game or the Xbox 360 but you never know for sure. Ask a friend or a relitive that has a 360.

It does depend on the game. High detailed shadows like self shadowing and real time projected shadows can seriously hurt the performance of a game. A lot of developers lower the shadow details to increase performance. You are not going to see amazing detailed shadows like you see in a game like Crysis. The system just can't handle it.

yesm its not the tv, nor the xbox. its the game engine. it dose it for performance. But yeah it dosent look as good, but its better than no shadows at all.

It's the game. Realtime Shadows take too much performance so the games end up with pixily or, jagged or blurry shadows.

how can it be the the game if not everyone is getting what I am no developer would allow a game to ship like this. While the pictures are bad real gameplay is so much much worse becasue im surrounded by the blur fuzz shadows

i think we are getting way too detailed with the answers to this guy's question. DO developers raise/lower shadow detail or details in general, yes. but i dont think you should rule out a hardware issue

Im really considering just taking it back and exchanging it but i was really more interested in knowing if this is at all common so i would know if it was hardware failure or if there is some other factor im overlooking

Where is this pole that was done that claims "not everyone is experiencing this shadow issue"? It is the game, pure and simple.

pop in your copy of gta 4 and tell me what you think. again this happens in more than this game. your standoffish attitude is not welcome here and others have claimed their game does not in fact look like this.

I'm not standoffish, I'm just calling BS on anyone that "doesn't see this". I have seen shadows like this on PC games with PC monitors and console games, from 360 to PS3 on varrying TVs. As stated before this is a technical limitation in the game and is chosen to free up resources, or apply them elsewhere.

This is a screen shot (supposedly) from the PC version of the game:

NOTE THE SHADOWS ON THE MOTORCYCLE.

I have seen pc screenshots with similar shadows but not 360 shots. PC can also adjust the quality of their shadows with various settings from what i hear. if anyone can post screens of their gta(360) experience i can pursue this or put it to rest.

no this is happening on the main characters its not a issue of distance and again this happens in more than one game.

How thick headed can people be? Because someone on the Internet comments on a problem with GTA's graphics, they assume it's a widespread problem and start to panic. Then multiple people reassure this person that it is not their Xbox, or their TV, but a game specific issue, but that isn't good enough. Then someone actually posts a screen of the exact same problem, but on the PC version and THAT isn't sufficient!

Christ Almighty.

well i never said it was a widespread problem im asking for a solution to this problem i never said blame rockstar it happens in more than this game ive said it so many times i posted a link to the screens in the first post. pc is not a 360 no matter what you say its just not the same. again all im asking about is the hardware situation it has nothing to do with the games from my point of view

What solution are you looking for? This is the 360 version, you can't just increase the graphics on it, what ships on the disc is what you get. You posted screens from the 360 version that you said aren't yours, so that means you are not alone in this, so maybe, just maybe this a game related issue.

Here is a screenshot comparing the 360 and the PS3 version and you can clearly see the issue on the 360 version (more proof it's out of your control) and you can even see it in the PS3 version. So there you go, ALL versions of the game have this shadow issue. Deal with it.

ok, so i went back to your original flickr link and looked at the pics. all i have to say is that the issue with the pixelated shadows is none-issue, really; that's just how they look. But the pic you have showing the taxi cab and the plants looking blurry and like you are on your 2nd case of Coors is NOT how it's supposed to look. I cannot justify what the cause is, but i think that should clear things up for everyone.

maybe if you turn off the automotion on games that give those problems? I know when my automotion is on high some games don't look as good because they're not optimized for it. Also some of these games aren't 1080p, this could be a product of upscaling.

if your referring to 120 hrz option ive tried it on and off as well as running my 360 at 720p. Large_Soda while i appreciate the effort im not targeting gta specifically because its not a game specific problem its just more obvious in this than others plus your screenshot looks better than my game so take from it what you will.i think this thread has reached the point of diminished return because i just seem to be going in circles here.

I don't think it's so much the 360 as much as it's the developers choice. I mean shadows aren't always pitch black in reality. They have many different shades and depths of colour with soft and defined edges depending on the objects that cast them and the angle of the light source. Maybe the devs wanted to make it look soft on purpose. Who knows. Check out the car windows in both Saints Row. They look "fuzzy", like you said.

I have exactly the same problem

I just bought a 32" full hd samsung but the when playing xbox 360, for example gta 4, shadows look really bad and the more distanced buildings are shaking and stuff, but i dont know if 1080p looks like that or there is some issue.....a tv or an xbox 360 issue,

This happens in almost every game, on COD4, the grace and trees look all pixely.................. ? In gears of war 2 the same happens

can be a tv issue?

Im portuguese....

hey everyone

i am also having this problem with my monitor and gta4 especially. The picture is completley blurry past a certain distance. Detail is not as great as it shouldbe. I know that this is not a game or system problem as I have tried the game on a different monitor and the same screen and the image is fine. I am running it on a samsung 24inch 16:10 monitor through hdmi. If anyone can give me some idea as too what is going wrong it would be greatly appreciated.

It's just bad graphics. Most games use low-resolution shadowing techniques.
