by rival I sure hope you dont mean wii? 0 hi-def and tiny disc space.
And no, It wont affect it this gen, but next gen is a completly different answer.
[QUOTE="magicalclick"]Well, Blue Dragon comes with 3 discs. I don't see Japanese gamers talkings$$$ about it. Besides, it is full of CGI, not really game data. If you only store game data + Halo or Dead Rising style real time cut-scene, it will only need 2 discs max. I think Mass Effect is coming with one dics with all that data.mjk_1
oh yea. I forgot about multiple disks.
The problem is that certain games you can have multiple disk like action/adventure(fable 2 and banjo), rpgs(blue dragon)and most single player games. But games like gta and sports game you CANT have multiple disk.
Some of you guys are missing the big picture. Space doesn't have to do with just cutscenes or the length of the games. Space also allows use of True 1080p Content (not upscaled textures, but native 1080p games), and things like PCM Linear Sound. Give me uncompressed audio running at 6+mbps= bliss to the ears on a good surround sound system. My .02 cents. Taijiquan
It can be done with multiples discs. At the same time, not very many people have that sort of setup anyway. The original xbox was much more powerful than the ps2, many xbox games ran in 480p and had better sound than the ps2 versions. The ps2 dominated the xbox regardless.
If Oblivion can fit into one disc then other games should be able to aswell. Granted the smaller disc size means there's gonna be some high-res textures we're gonna miss out on but as long as the gameplay is solid, that tiny graphical improvement isn't worth a dime (to me at least). If higher res textures sold consoles.. would the Wii be selling at all? :)
No.. its about the gameplay. A lot of devs need to spend less time on textures and more on gameplay and content (which is getting ridiculously sparse these days in games).
A few years down the track, I think MS could potentially be less anal about "No games requiring HD-DVD or HDD attachments" and maybe then devs might have some more breathing room if they need it.. but seriously.. if you're spending that much discspace or just making the game look shiny.. you're not innovating the gameplay enough..
my 2c :)

i agree, disk space could be a problem in couple of years but right now its just fine, and disk swapping is not that big a deal to me anyway.
I'mnot trying to get any one mad here but give 3rd party developers a year and there will be no comparison between 360 and PS3 games, the PS3 just has more power and a larger capacity disc, better looking games are inevitable on the PS3 unless of course PS3 doesn't sell as many consolesthen developers wont bother which is possible but I wouldn't count on itredX5112
Dont believe everything sony says, the power of the 360 is very comparable to the ps3. Sony is so full of crap that it isnt funny.

that could be true, I never really looked at the specs nor do I care, all I know I own both consoles and this year going to be awesome

For sure, the specs are hard to comapre. The 360 is better at many things, but then the ps3 is better at others...

Xbox 720 will have a 5-Disk changer to compensate for multidisk games you can change on the fly lol
No seriously, I would not worry about it for this gen.
Better compression and better stream lined games engine?
Or maybe a Hard Disk solution?
PS3 may have the capaicty but they read the disks slower. Currently, the PS3 has a heavier use of HD drive compared to the 360 (since most games are still designed with the Core in mind).
I think its an easy solution, multiple disk for core users, the option of using the hard drive for the premium and elite users. Hell I have over 100gig free right now. It will read off my hard drive faster than any High-Def drive anyway. For those that dont have ahard driveor space on theirhard drivefree, they can use multiple disk.
Also seems like the developers are getting lazy with compression. I know I have read in several places the compression is not being used to capacity by any developer.
The Wii doesn't have any rivals.by rival I sure hope you dont mean wii? 0 hi-def and tiny disc space.

Actually I believe rather then these 2 failing, I see the wii sinking and not doing as well then sony getting back in the race. Xbox and PS will be neck and neck I think.
well.. as far as i can see.... 20gb-HDD wich most ppl have wont help us much to store rest of the game.. and multiple disk swamping can be a real pain... The main thing is that the this generation have just started.. i dont see like ending it for atleast 5 more years... so, i wont like to microsoft left behind again.. Uchiha_madara
The 360 is already near two years old, another 4 years before the next system and im happy. It will take the ps3 2-3 years to show any real superiority.
I'm sure disc space won't be an issue in the foreseeable future. Besides, developers have been putting games on multiple discs for a LONG time. Remember the first matrix game(shudders...)? I had that for the gamecube and it had two disc's. Plus every final fantasy game I played on the PS2 had like 4 disc's so I'm sure if developers run out of space on one disc, they'll just use another.Knubbz360
Multiple discs arent a problem in linear games but non linear games you cant use multiple discs.
Not much fun swapping discs everytime you need to play a certain area.

Yeah. Seems resonable that the 360 will live for 3-4 years more. There is no way MS will allow Sony to catch up now that they are one year ahead. They will want to be first out with the next gen of consoles also.
multi disk RPG's are usual.. but can u like see multiple disked racing, free-roaming, or even FPS?Uchiha_madara
Yes, The Matrix and Killer7 on the gamecube(yes, gamecube)were shooters with multiple discs. I personally wouldn't have a problem swapping out discs in the middle of games if the content on each disc was very engrossing and the game didn't lose it's pace. Besides, it seems to me people think that they'll have to switch out a disc in the middle of a boss battle, important race, or even a save point when every game I've played the developers put it at a slower point in the game as to not kill the flow of the game abruptly.

doubt that would ever happen.

lol.. hope no more foults would be made in the next one.. next thing u know next one have self destruction.. lol.. J/K..
but hope microsoft stays ahead like now
I didnt think it would happend so soon.. PGR2 is complaining about their game not fitting into the disk.. so u think Highdef games are gona get bigger then a 360 disk... if so its bad for 360 unless they act soon... or rival will take over..Uchiha_madara
People don't seem to have a good memory.. considering last generation they were saying the exact same thing with the ps2. But in the end it didn't matter sony still sold more, proving that size and graphics don't matter much.

never happpen. devs that would make games multiplatform want to save money so they make all their games very similiarly. Only Sony exclusives show the power of the PS3. And anyway the PS3 is very minimally more powerful and is very expensive, even with the price drop for a 60gb PS3 you could get a Elite with 120gb for less. And plus developers like money so they spread games to as many platforms as possible.

Data compression? I haven't heard of it... That is very interesting, but the 360 uses dual layer discs, is there a USB device that could be hooked to the 360 so that it could read triple layer discs? Is that possible... anyone?
Fear mongering at it's finest. People are so gullible it's not even funny anymore. The guys from Bizzare Creations are just plain lazy or stupid. They wanted to fit the SAME textures onto the disc but once shaded for night levels, once for twilight and once for day. The solution they use now: pre-calculate the light maps at the start of the race/level. Big woop. Sony simply took the ammunition Bizzare gave them and used it to trash-talk. As they ALWAYS do. Business as usual. BTW, comparing the specs will tell you one thing: 360 is a damn fine games-console that can barely play HD movies. PS3 is a damn find HD-movie player that can barely play games. Wait for the 6/10 Lair reviews...Flavour666
lol.... I like how u comment about ps3.. Hehe.. i just read about it in kotaku.. lol but stil problem in near future but nt yet..

Chrono Cross on PS1 was fairly free roaming, there was only one disc swap. You were actually in the same locations on either disc, i think it was the cutscenes that had to be on seperate discs.
