anyone have any ideas as to why my 360 display looks significantly sharper/better in 480p than in 720p/1080i?

My tv's native resolution is 1080i and that just confuses me even further.

the make and model of your tv would help... that doesn't sound right at all.

I agree, it doesn't seem right at all.  It's an Insignia NS27HTV.

Is the TV set for "Strech" "16:9" or that other one?  My Philips has that same problem, for 1080i your TV has to be set in the wide screen format (even if its not widescreen).  You will get black bars

the widescreen 'black bars' are not the issue. I understand that HD from 720 upwards is only in widescreen. the issue is an overall degredation of the picture quality which is entirely unapparent in 480p.  Obviously this should not be the case as 720p and 1080i should look significantly sharper than 480p.

The only thing that I can think of is a) did you switch the setting from SDTV to HDTV on the component cables, and b) did you change the display settings from the dashboard?  If you haven't done both of those things, the picture could be affected.

yup. the switch on the cables is set to HDTV, not regular TV. The settings in the dashboard have also been changed accordingly.
