can someone explain to me the difference betwen 60fps, and 30 fps and how it affects games..thanks

[QUOTE="awsss"]FPS = frames per second.
60 FPS is silky smooth. 30 FPS is laggy garbage.

i do hope that was a joke :|
30 fps is actually good its not garbagei kinda understand now..but how can you tell how many frames are drawn per second..i kno IGN in their reviews state that the game drops from30 - 15fps..how do they determine thatIronre5
well, they're just giving an estimation... you can tell if you are playing a game at it's determined fps for a while and then it suddenly appears to be slowing down. It's very noticeable, there are also times when the fps goes up, it's not very common and there is usually not much going on in this situation.
The human eye only sees 24fps believe it or not, so 30 or 60 fps are both very good. However, it's still better to have 60fps because if the game dips but still doesn't go below around 24fps, the game will still appear to be running smoothly.
If there's slowdown in a game with only 30fps, odds are you'll notice it because it'll probably be making a lower frame rate than what your eye takes in.
want to know a vary large secret? Well the most the human eye can see is 24 FPS which is guest what, the exact frames per second that the movie industry uses. Games that are 30 or 60 FPS you can see tell a slight difference but it is not actually as great as people make out to be a huge deal about it.Maidendude

This guy is a little dramatic...There is vertually NO difference in the 2. Come one people dont feed people crap

I'm not going to debate your statement, but I will say, if the human eye is incapable of seeing higher than 24fps, then please explain why it is so easy to tell the difference between 24fps, 30fps and 60fps sources?
ooooohhhh noess...i wanted to buy UT3 for the 360, cos im a huge UT fan...i kno the PC version is 60fps, and the console versions at 20 fps..the PC version is 100% movement speed whereas console version is 80% speed...plus PC has better graphics, but i heard the PC servers arent as populated, and this coming to xbox live, will have more ppl......so which version should i buy?Ironre5lol you should play graw 2 that games got like 15 fps

Over the years this debate has come up tons of times. I uploaded this a long time ago because people where saying you couldn't tell the difference between anything over 60 fps. See for yourself 30/60 or any FPS side by side.

You're insane. 30 FPS is pretty damn laggy. If my PC games were running at anything less than 60 FPS, I'd either
A) Turn down the settings.
B) Upgrade my hardware.
And if you can't tell the difference between the two, you're blind.

Trouble is this is with regards to consoles (360 section so i assume it is) and tv's are different to PC monitors and as such the difference isn't as noticable between 30 and 60fps on them (it's a fact), also even with PC's monitors there isn't a huge diffence between the 2 when done properly (ie quake wars on pc), there is a diffence yes BUT it's far from 60 is smooth and 30 is laggy (your very wrong on that i'm afraid)

Seems like both of you are speaking too dramatically.
The difference between the two is completely noticeable, not "virtually no difference" and 30fps is not "laggy garbage", sure it isn't as good as 60fps, but to say it's garbage is just silly and inaccurate.
I cannot believe the 24fps myth still persists to this day. Movie studios went with 24fps because it was the best overall compromise between quality and cost. I mean, if they shot 30 frames a second they'd be burning through 25% more film all the time. It's acceptable, and the motion blur resulting from the photographic process helps trick our eyes a bit too.
If the human eye couldn't see above 24fps, we wouldn't get headaches with CRT monitors running refresh rates less than 100Hz. No one would notice ghosting on LCDs.
And there is a noticable difference between 60fps and 30fps in games. 60fps is about as buttery smooth as you're going to get on a console. 30 isn't chunky by any means, but it is considerably less smooth.
Then there's always a game like Perfect Dark on the N64 if we feel the need to relive single digit framerates.

Well since EVERY major motion picture released today is shot at 24 FPS, I guess all movies are "laggy garbage"

Actually these "laggy" motion pictures is running 24fps... you're not wrong here but every image isbeing drawn twice to get a better flow and also they come together nicely with blur effects.
Also many people here claim that the eye cannot see more than 24 images per second which is wrong. We don't see images, what humans see is a constant flow of reflections of light. However if something is running on an uncomfortable framerate for the eye the image can come out as if it is "flickering".
60 Fps is something gamedevs try to acheive, but 30 fps is not at all bad. I myself program a few 360 apps with XNA and must say that getting a nice looking game running on a smooth 60fps is a lot of hard work. Most of the time you have to scale the drawing or the framerate will drop really fast.

exactly, having a higher framerate cap is good so that if the game has slow down it won't be terrible. A 30 fps game is fine, but if it has a lot of slow down expect poor performance as the framerate could dip down to low teens, as opposed to a 60 fps game where slow down is not as drastic. In the end there's really no big difference.

actually, i think the console UT3 is very fast and i notice zero slow down. it does look like it's at 60 fps or at least close to it.
I personally can notice a pretty big difference. Two of the main games I play on the 360 are CoD 4 and Forza 2, and both run at 60fps. If I go to PGR or Halo, I can instantly tell the difference.
As others have said, 30 fps certainly playable, but 60fps is alot nicer.

Exactly. This can be seen quite clearly whenever there are fast movements, it's a very clunky impression. The other thing I forgot to mention before is that the framerate also affects gameplay - to the extent that you receive visual feedback on your inputs. So for Forza 2, which runs at 60fps, you only have to wait 1/60th of a second to see what happens when you hit your brakes or pull to one side. Project Gotham Racing 4, which is 30fps, takes twice as long to give similar feedback.
Ultimately it's not a huge deal because you'll adjust to whatever framerate a game runs at (unless it's inconsistent), but a game runs smoother and is snappier to play when it's 60fps.
