made this a while back more to do with what tvs to buy vut still explains it. basically stick with 720p. def dont want 1080i - has the same fault that standard def (480i) has.
The short of it is: 1080 has more pixels on screen than 720. This means images are sharper on 1080. however the i vs p makes the difference, where 1080i refreshes half of the screens pixels one frame and then the other half of the pixels the other frame, and back and forth to create an animation effect. Better resolution, but fast moving objects will look 'torn' as they move, and this is bad for video games where stuff is moving on screen all the time.
720p uses progressive and refreshes the entire screen of pixels with every frame. This means fast moving objects always stay sharp while in motion. In the end 720p is better for animations and 1080i is better for still frame shots.
