If you play a 720p game in 1080p, your basically scaling it to 1080p to fit your TV/monitor, which is called upscaling, and the size of height and width of the res is the main difference to get a various size in picture quality. Playing a 1080p game in 1080p is perfect. Since half the games this gen are 720p-1080p, well a few games are 1080p, this is a good thing, but for lower than 720p games, seeing Halo 3 and Perfect Dark Zero(which are in 640p) on a HDTV won't make a difference if you want it to be in HD. And don't play games in 1080i either.
[QUOTE="lman013"]Yeah, monitors have better resolutions than TV's plus no interlacing. I love using PC monitors, when I play games in HD on a monitor and HDTV, the monitor is better.Just because you have an HDMI console doesn't mean you will actually be playing in TRUE 1080p. Only a few games support 1080p and you must have a 1080p HDTV (Or Monitor i prefer)

He's not asking which one is better, he's asking if there's a noticeable difference between the two. The difference becomes harder to discern with the smaller the screen, however like someone else said most games will be running at 720p anyways.
Furthermore just because someone isn't up to date with screen tech doesn't mean they're stupid. By the way the terminology is diving off the tree- you can't climb something whilst hitting things on the way down, stupid.
To TC: I would strongly recommend getting 1080p for 42" and up, whether you decide if it's worth it for 32" and bellow is up to you, go look at some of the TV's in stores they usually have them all playing on demonstration so you can get a good idea.
No, what is stupid is the majority of gamers who are playing there games on terrible LCD TV's that can't process motion even remotely good. What a smart question is seeing if anyone has actually gone back and forth between hdmi and component, if not than it's all subjective. And like I said, do the 1080p games upconvert or are they actually done in 1080p?
Since nearly all 360 games are 720p native or lower (and are being upscaled to 1080p anyway, whether that upscaling is being done by the 360 itself or your TV,) there is no noticeable difference for the most part. And depending on how big your screen is and the distance you sit from it is also a factor... not to mention your eyesight.

I`ve only wrote what Nurse Bob said in GTA:LCSYou're probably like most people who can't see a difference, and since 360 games support/run in 720p, 1080p(a few) and even 640p(not HD, but not SD either) , 1080i is near useless, not a single game runs in that res, and the reasons may be too complicated for most people to understand.I use 1080i and I'm perfectly fine with it I've never noticed a downside.

I am very up to date w/ screen tech, as I sell home theater for a living. Because of that, I know that alot of things that say they are "1080p" arent, and for that matter, some things look better w/ component cables than HDMI cables. A lot of cable box's look better w/ component output than the do w/ HDMI out, and some don't.
I have a 58" set, I was just asking if anyone has noticed a difference. I know 1080 has 2 times as many pixels as a 720p set.

Never use interlaced for games, use 720p instead. http://www.cnet.com/hdtv-resolution/ has good info. There is a recent thread here on GS discussing 720p and 1080p: Full HDTV owners got a Question for you.
I used to work at Circuit City and had to sell TV's, Blu-Ray and whatnot. And I have to say that selling people on the difference from SDTV to HDTV(720p) was pretty easy. But convincing people that 1080p was really worth the extra money over a 720p set was often very difficult. Sometimes impossible. Some people just couldn't see the difference.

I have a 22" LG. It can be used as a regular HDTV, and also as a PC monitor! It's awesome. I've changed between 720p and 1080i a few times, and seriously, I can't see a difference. But what does it matter? HD picture looks awesome anyway! I use 720p 'cause I've read that it is better in some way, don't remember how excactly though. XD
Oh, maybe it was that thing called "interlacing"..? :D

Oh, well, that's them, my bad if I pointed it out to you.Seriously though man, if you want the TRUE hi-def gaming experience, assuming you game by yourself, get at least a 25" monitor. It kicks hdtv's ***! Plus a 26" HDTV is $400+ and a 25" monitor costs as low as $229. I'm in Texas, so the price of living is low.I have heard that HDMI consoles only upconvert to 1080p. i am considering getting asystem w/ HDMI. I hate to say it, but I've got to disagree. Monitors are far to bright, and don't produce lifelike colors at all. I have played on monitors before. The colors are too fake, let alone too small. I however, do agree that monitors are far superior than lcd's, led's, dlp's, and even some tube sets. I however disagree, and think the textures, color, black levels, and overall picture is much better on my plasma set. not to mention I couldn't utilize my klipschtower speakers if I was 2 feet from a small monitor.

same here my friend
I was getting ready to say the same thing. I use to sell TV's at circuit city. I seen a ton of them in HD. anything over 40" I would want 1080p for sure. 40" I would not need it, be happy with 720p if it had great contrast. The difference between 720p/1080i and 1080p is only visible on a TV over 40inch in size.

on a small tv, your not going to see a difference, You wont notice a diference on anything on tvs smaller then 40 inches and it also depends on how close you sit too. On a large TV thats 60 inchs or a projector 1080p will make a difference.
Nah, I can also see a difference on a LCD monitor even in the 20 inch area, its' really just a bigger screen size for more pixels which leads to a better picture quality. The difference between 720p/1080i and 1080p is only visible on a TV over 40inch in size.

Wow, can it go any lower? Nope. on most monitors, it's recommended to change the Reference Levels of your console to either Expanded or Full. For me the higher resolution the better. Yes, some games don't support it. Hakud0ushi
Guys lets keep in mind, the biggest thing that will make a difference is COLOR. A high end 720p set will have much better texture and gradation of colors than a low end 1080p set.
