A perfectly good game ruined.

Now iv'e been playing oblivion for almost 3 years now since i got my xbox. I had a short break from it never completed and started playing it again for the first time in awhile. I were about 80 hours into the game and i was really loving it. Then everything went down hill. Minor loading screen problems such as freezing occured. I wasn't worried about it at first but then it came down on a bomb shell and one day the loading screen completley froze. I read on the internet what to do about it. I cleared my cache, bought a new disk, did everything i could possibly do and it did not work. Now this game is quite frankly amazing, millions of people have the same problem and there is absolutley NOTHING you can do about it. I was completley raging mad because i love this game. And its such a major fault with in the game itself it makes me wonder how on earth they can get away with this. I've read media reviews about people talkign about this game. And the only ones mentioning its freezing problems are us. Bethseda themselves refuse to recognize the fault with this game. They might have tried patching it before but it obviously doesn't work. Now what i would like to know is. I saw on the marketplace on the dashboard that you can now by games and download them to your harddrive. And i saw oblivion on there, but i don't want to waste 20 pounds on it and then find out it does exactly the same thing. Because i love this game to bits, but there is no way im starting all over again. So can someone please tell me if the solution to buying this on the 360 dashboard is a good one, and that im assured this problem will not happen. Because otherwise i'll just not bother.

Dude it's not Bethesda. I know, I play Oblivion and never had those troubles, If you have XBL those updates CAN freeze your 360. It happened to my WaW but it never had any faults with it.

Most people have XBL. Bethseda made the game with XBL with in reason ofcourse its there problem. Any XBL updates would be for the game itself. Even if you clear the cache of all updates it still wont work. All i want to know is will the marketplace download do exactly the samething?

You do not need to buy a digital copy of the game! If you have a 360 hard drive, simply install your Oblivion disc to it! Go to your game library (With the Oblivion disc inserted) and pick the Oblivion tab, then, if you have enough space on the HDD, choose 'Install to Hard Drive'. I have had two games that were unplayable due to loading times and this solved the problem very efficiently.

Oblivion has known cache fragmentation problem. Hold A when you start the game to clean up (hold it from you select it in the dashboard to the logo appears). If that was what you meant by clearing cache then i don't have other ideas.

I'm just at 200 hours with Oblivion(haven't played it in hella long) but I never had problems as bad as your describing, once in awhile the game would lock but it wasn't to often.

well its probably not the game and is most likely a problem with the save file. buying the marketplace version may not fix anything. I suggest trying to start a new game to see if the problem persists.

I wouldn't buy a new copy if I were you.. then you'd have to start over and that's 80 hours of your life wasted right there.. Try doing what everybody said and just install the game and see if that fixes anything. I know exactly what you mean though, I hate when certain older games are unplayable.. simply because there's just no way they are going to fix them now. I remember a few months ago I got a copy of Red Dead Revolver (Xbox) and apparently there's a backwards compatability error so it always freezes at the same part. So basically.. I wasted my money.. put in about 2 hours of solid gameplay and now I can't even advance in the story. It's a shame really.. but I know they won't fix it because it's an old game.

Installing it to HDD does help tremendously. But if your game got scratched up from use, then it will poop out. I went through two Oblivions, one began to freeze a lot so I traded it in. (dont buy used games lol) Then I got GOTY and kept it on the HDD. Had no more problems afterwards but the freezing was a sign of the RROD. Later that month my box took a big red poop. Oblivion was fine, not the box. R.I.P. very first 360.:x

I could never get into this game...I've had it for over a year and I just never play it, it just seems so boring to me.Like you get out of the tutorial...and then there is no direction...you just go do whatever, and everything is all quest-based which I hate. I'm thinking I really just prefer a good linear RPG to a wildly abstract one in most cases.

I have the GotY edition and it's only frozen once in 40 hours. Hope you figure it out. Btw, guys, can I install games onto an external hard drive and play them on the Xbox 360? Also, how much space does it take to install Oblivion onto a hard drive?

5.9 GB

And with all of the add-ons it is about 7 GB.

On the dashboard, start the game pressing the "a" button, and keep it pressed until the game logo (it will free the game cache). That worked for me, hope it works for you as well.

I'm with you on that one.. never really even bothered to get this game let alone get into it. The thought of putting 80 hours into a game is nice, but then again those 80 hours are probably somewhat bland in terms of gameplay. You end up doing repetitive things and it just doesn't interest me. I prefer a linear RPG as well.. something where you progress in the story and here and there get to make certain game altering decisions, you get to level yourself up, change your looks, so on.. but not something where you just go run into the world and have to figure everything out yourself and do things out of order.

Games installed to the hard drive run smoother and load faster. The exception that I know of is Halo 3....it runs worse when installed for some reason.

Well guys everything you have come up with i've tried before. I've held A as the game starts up, the disc makes a frequent noise but nothing changes. I've installed and un installed the game from the hard drive several times but nothing either. I've even cleared my cache of all updates and triedplaying thegame with out me being signed into XBL.

I guess im just one of those un lucky people. I've started a new game however and it works fine, i found out if i had enough saves i could easily go back to that one, but i only had two on my original play through and both of them are screwed. However there is no possible way i am even attempting to play another 80 hours and get to where i left off. I guess i'll have to leave it , theres not a chance in hell i'm waisting my money on the marketplace download to find out it's not gonna work.

Anyways, thanks for your advice guys. ;]

Do what this person said, and also TRY TO INSTALL THE GAME TO YOUR HD.
