If your X-box 360 crashes, is the detachable HD wiped out as well? I was just wondering if it's worth buying a memory card to back up my game saves?

No it doesn't affect the HDD at all, you just take it off when you exchange your 360/send it to MS and then re-attach it when you have your new one
