Well my Xbox died about a month ago and I sent it back to get it fixed so then they send me a refurbished one, but lo and behold it already has in full the Red Rings.... I just want to know what exactly are they refurbishing and is it really that hard to check to see if one works or not before they send it out...

"Refurbish" is defined as "return to original specifications." So, they look for any broken parts and fix them, and return the 360 to its original state. This includes logic boards, heatsinks, and CPU/GPUs. If you got RRoD again, that is simply unlucky, plain and simple. I know quite a few folks with refurbs that work just fine. If you call Microsoft back and state that you were very unhappy with your refurb and would like to see an effort made to send you a new box, the phone agent will usually put it in the case notes and you should get a new box. Just remember to be pissed at Microsoft, not the phone agent. If you take out any frusteration on the person that answers the phone, you are screwed. Be firm and state your reasonable frusteration- by my calculations if you send in a box 2 times, that's 45+ days without games, which is of course super lame. Good luck.

I got a refurb back a couple months ago (mfr date was 3 months newer than the one I sent in) after getting both the RRoD and a jammed CD drive within 5 minutes of one another. The refurb runs almost ridiculously quiet (WAY more quiet than the brand new Elite) and throws off noticeably less heat than the one it replaced. The refurb became my bedroom system so it doesn't get very heavy use, but so far, so good. I have to give MS mad props for the speedy turnaround. 10 days from me shipping it to them to the fixed 360 arriving on my door on a 360 that would have otherwise been out of warranty and had multiple issues...thats pretty good service.
