Can I put a hard drive in the core version?

Yes, the hard drive is external so you just attach it to the outside.

do you need a hard drive to play live? or can u use a 256 mb mem card?

you can go on live as long as you have some memory card or a HDD.

But honestly, I don't know why you would get a Core/Arcade system. Just save a little more money and get an Elite or the Premnium one.

The hard drive just attaches to the outside. It's pretty cool. My first Elite went down, but I had the premium insurance package (whatever it's called) from GameStop. They gave me a new Xbox, and attached my hard drive, so I still had all my saved games. I was up and playing again within hours of the failure.

I think you do need a HDD to go on live o_o. Thats why I bought one (Got the arcade) lol
