From using the FAQ's in the "Family Pack" section of the Xbox website, I've created a little scenario that I am going to test...

1. My wife is signed on to her Xbox Gold account on MY 360, and she buys a game via DLC.

2. She then signs off of my 360 and retrieves her gamertag on HER 360.

3. Then, while signed in on her gamertag, she downloads the game onto her 360.

Supposedly, according to the FAQ's I mentioned above, she will be able to play the DLC on her 360 because it was her gamertag that purchased it, and I should be able to play the game on MY xbox because the game is licensed to my Xbox.

Is this correct? I remember my friend telling me his family does something like this with Rock Band DLC and multiple household Xbox's, but I didn't look into it back then because we didn't have two Xbox's.

All licensing is tied to the gamertag, not the console. If it is possible to have your gamertag on two separate consoles at the same time, then yes it can be done. I'm not too sure on that myself...

This would actually be an interesting test. I understand the logic and I would think that as long as you are signed into Xbox Live on either console, you should be able to use the DLC on both. But I don't know how it would work out without testing it. Try it and let us know what you find.

Licensing is tied to both your gamertag AND your console. Which is why we have the license transfer process for when you start using a different console due to a replacement. You can use DLC while signed in under your gamertag on a second console, but if you are not signed in under that gamertag, the DLC on that second console will not be available or fully unlocked if it was an arcade game for instance.

I thought all licensing was tied to the gamertag... it makes more sense to license that way from a monetary standpoint.

Yeah, especially if this works.

It will be easy enough to check. She has Plants/Zombies on hers, and I've got Monday Night Combat on mine. So we can just transfer gamertags to see what works and doesn't work.

It is tied to BOTH gamertag AND console.

It will definitely work if her gamertag is signed in (not to live, just locally) with a second controller on your xbox. I have done that before so I know it will work. Otherwise I'm not sure. If you try it let us know how it goes.

why does it make more sense that way? but yeah its tied to both. Reason being is so that you can play the stuff you purchased offline. If you try playing DLC on a 360 that didnt make the purchase, the content wont work unless your connected to live.
