i tried to play ut3 online with my friend on one consle but when we try it always says there's an error. Does this happen to anyone else, and if so, how do you fix it?

to play split screen you have togo to instant action choose your game map and game type then when you are at the last menu you have to turn split screen on, you also both need to be logged onto a profile

but arent instant action matches just with bots?

Instant Action is just with bots. You can also do split screen in player matches though. You may have been getting the error because you were trying to split screen ranked matches.

u need to turn the 2nd pad on, before u pick the options for the game they is a button X i believe that ur friend has to press to sign in, then he must choose the guest account. once that has been picked u can then pick a player game and turn the split screen option on. if it dont work then try hosting the match, u might have a issue with ur nat not being open if u have connection to games issues. but ur friend must sign in as guest. i had same problem before trying to go in from a diff account then relised it has to be guest for online splitscreen also ur main account must have a gold live subscription for player 1 or the guest wont work
