Just wondering what other gamers thought on acheivements on games. Whether your playing it because you enjoy the game or just purely going after the acheivements or a bit of both?

Leave comments below please :)

I pay no minde to the acheivements. I don't read head to see what they are. I just play through and unlock as I go. I've never got 100% acheivements on a game and I prolly never will.

I see no downsides to achievements, really...If anything, they increase replay value. I play games to play them, but I also play to get achievements if I don't have to go to too much trouble.

I don't play games I don't like just to get achievements. I'll look to see what they are, or open up a guide to find collectibles (especially when they unlock stuff besides achievements, like pages in Alan Wake). I never go out of my way to do annoying this like finding pigeons in GTA4, all the orbs in Crackdown, or all the blast shards in Infamous (which is the last trophy I need for 100%).

Achievements are not a problem in any way for someones enjoyment of a game. If someone finds themselves angrily trying to get achievements instead of playing what they like then they probably were not big fans of video games in the first place.

I agree that they can add more life to a game, such as GTA - completing the story in under 30 hours, saying that you've done that is a bit of a achievement (I don't know how easy/hard this is to get mind you!) however some of the pointless achievements just ain't worth the stress. I think that your going to get people who think by completing a game 100% like in game (collecting things and completing the main story) they will feel happy in saying yes I've completely done everything in that game, however others will argue with the fact you haven't maybe got all the achievements therefore you've not done 'everything'

Achievements give you more to do in a game and add replay value. If you don't like a game then don't try for achievements in it and if you don't like achievements then don't look at the achievement list. There is no negatives to them.

I like achievements ONLY if they are single player... Multiplayer achievements just gives you Halo 3 where kids come into the lobby "HEY DOES ANYONE WANT TO BOOST BLAH BLAH WITH ME!?!?"... Games like CoD are the example I want all games to be like, just put them all in story/coop... None in vs mp...

And especially never ever again in all of gaming should anyone do achievements like GRAW1 for the love of god... Achievements for reaching number 1 on a leader board... Accept GRAW had 3 of those achievements for 3 different leaderboards... And an achievement for "hosting 1000 mp matches"... Stuff that would either take hundreds of hours or are just physically impossible without cheating...

I want achievements that are:

1) Story based...

2) Out of my way based... What I mean by this is achievements that would make me do something I wouldn't otherwise do... Like if there are achievements for getting all of something, or saving not killing everyone in the game, etc... Things that if there were no achievement for them, I would be oblivious to them...

3) Replay value based... Different difficulties, completionist things such as 100% (as long as they have it set up correctly)... More games need to be like Batman: AA... Whenever you get a collectible, it is marked off your map, all collectibles are vaguely put onto your map so you can find them (but you still have to look for them)... And most were not simply collectibles, but puzzles... To where finding them was just the beginning, then you needed to solve the riddle (hence why they were called Riddler challenges...)... No more GTA4 or Crackdown things where there is no tracking at all... And if in your quest to get all 800 orbs or 200 pigeons you miss 1 thing along the way... You basically have to start over because it is impossible to find that 1 out of 200 or 1 our of 800 that you missed in the entire city...

Achivements are just something that is up to the person how important they are. To get a high achivements score you need to play games a long time to get each ore play many games.

Enchanted Arms have all acheivements as part of the main story.

Or if people are going around glitching or not playing right to get them. I also hate ones that rely on other people, like Red Dead's win three or four team games in a row.

Yeah I like some because after I finish the game I have something to go back and have a reason to play it, but the first playthrough I dont take notice to it at all, its just when I wanna play some more that it gives me a goal to achieve

this guy really knows, I don't mind MP achievements as long as they are: kill 100 eemies with certain weapons or reach x rank, what I don't like is achievements that are a combination of luck and skill like some of halo's, or some ridiculous feats in battlefield bad company like....run over 5 enemies in a boat.....what the hell is that?

Well, I hate crazy achievements that are insanely hard to get that can stress you out and take your mind off the game. Other then that it increases replay value, and gives me a reason to play a game if I don't like it. :P

i dislike them,

they make gaming feel like one long grind. they kinda suck the fun out of it.

i never bother with them but i constantly get people comparing my skills on a game with the achieviements (which i cant turn off, and gamerscore is always tied to my tag)

it makes you do pointless mundane tasks. if i wanted to collect 1000 rabbits or whatever, i would do it because i loved a certain game not to grind for an achiviement, which then you will feel obliged to do so on the next game you play whether you like it or not. in the end gaming becomes a chore.

once people get 100% they feel the game is done and never go back to it. so the argument about them being like high scores is ridiculous. i can still go back to space invader seven though its been out about 30 years and still try to beat my high score.

and its really irritating when i speak to a friend or play co-op and all they can think about is where the next achiviement is coming from

I agree with some of the points raised by Buttons1990 - it is annoying to be playing a multiplayer game and have someone keep going on about how you should team up with them to get the acheivement for a billion headshots or whatever. A mate of mine (Lyrical Bre on Xbox Live) is basically out to max his gamerscore. If that's what he's into then I don't see it as a downside but it does seem a bit wierd. I don't care about my gamerscore - I've played about 50 characters on Oblivion for example and obviously you only get the acheivements on the first few goes - I play for the game, not the score.

EDIT: Just thought of this - Secret Acheivements are a good way to keep a game fresh and minimise the "I just want the acheivements" mentality. Of course, thanks to the internet (booo) you can just look them up.

It's always up and down. Some games give nice achievments, and then some they can't seem to figure out what to give. I guess some developers want to extend the game through MP, but most just add stuff in at times. RDR has some pretty cool ones referencing movies, or stories from years past in the game. I also liked some from almost any game that are original. The hardest ones are the forcefull onesfrom play through Expert (Not always enjoyable), and time trials. Not a lot of people out there enjoy the game enough to try and play the game the fastest they can. An achievment for something like this is weak in my books.

achievements are one of the best invoations for games this generation, im no cheevo hunter on a massive scale, but anything that actually gives you a reason to get collectables and replay with a higher difficulty mode i think its a pretty good idea. now i wont play games just for the achievements, you wont find the old avatar, king kong etc on my account, bad games are bad games and achievements do not make me want to play bad games. but i have to admit when i used to play games previousily i would never got for all the collectables, and often id play thought and the difficulty level wasnt changed the second play through espieally if was too hard, but since achievements theres been a fair few games where ive thought well i'll play though again on the next difficulty up and sometimes the hardest difficulties, like i tried cod4 on verteran, i didnt complete it as im not that good but theres no way in hell i would of tried to complete on vet if there wasnt a achievement there, its also changed my attitude to collectables (although i like it best where u get cheevos for for milestones of the total collectables, rather than one achievement for getting 300-500 things) i also find they make a good profile of a gamer if you want to weigh up what someone is like you are going to play against online. this is why MP cheeveos are good, so u can see whos been playing long term, and potential skill levels. theres no way they are killing games at all, if they are they can only be killing your expeierence, so if thats the case just turn the achievement notifications off and you wont notice them anymore

I love achievments, they add a lot of replay value and make the game more complete. Only thing I don't like is if their online and they make people ruin games because their trying to get a certain one.

While they add replay value for most people, I actually replay games less because of them. Once I've completed a game and got about 500GS, I won't usually play it again, and yet on the PS2 I used to replay games like Hitman: Blood Money and God of War just for the fun. I don't know why achievements have done this to my gaming but they have.

Strange eh...

I have a friend who 'achievement spams' and who only plays games that offer easy achievements. Whenever we talk about games or if I mention I've bought a new game, the first thing he asks is what the achievements are like. It's bizarre to me. It's a nice feeling when I do something in-game and the achievement just pops up, but I wouldn't waste my time going out of my way to chase something such as points, especially if I wasn't earning it legitimately, for example through boosting etc

I agree that achievements give some games replay value. For me the gameplay is more important then the achievements, but I will grab some extra achievements if they are not to hard. As for people who just achievement hunt - well it is upto them it is not like they're hurting anyone.

I love achievements. They give me reasons to keep playing after I've beaten the game. I try to get all the achievements for every game I play but I don't play lame kids games just for easy achievements. There isn't really anything bad about them. If you don't care then just ignore them. You're not missing out on anything if you don't get them.

I like the way that Acheivements are right now. Their value is only related to how much the person want them to be. It is fun getting some of them. I would hate for them to give rewards for them like MS points (highly unlikely but an example).

They add replay value to the game. Kinda like little challenges. Nothing wrong with them unless they are online because it encourages boosting. I would never play a game just to get achievements though.

some games i bought that weren't all that good i just played them until i got enough achievements or games that i knew i wasn't gona play for a long time like Mass Effect 2 i got most of the achievements on the game then traded it in. i think achievements help games because in some cases it can make the player better at the game like trying to do a certain combo in a fighting game or getting a killing frenzy in halo they make you better while playing for the achievement

Imo, achievements lengthen gameplay and gameplay hours. Some achievements are satisfying to go after and when you finally get it, it's rewarding. It's like a collection of achievements, nifty icons, whatever you want to call it. Without them, it would feel really weird. And how can they kill games? Whether they're there or not, doesn't affect the game in any way. If anything, it makes online play more competitive and interesting. At first, I dont play a game for achievements, but if I think it would be fun to go back and play a certain game and get achievements while I'm at it then okay. But if a game would be boring to go back and play a second time, I would not play it ever again, achievements or not.

I won't play easy/terrible games strictly for achievements. I get games that I know I'll like and I enjoy going for all the achievements. I'm more of a completionist than really caring about how high my gamerscore is.

It's an extra for me. But NO WAY i'm gonna play a game again or keep tracking of the achievements before playing so i "dont miss any", thats just awful to think about. I get what i can and if the game is fun and im still on the mood on playing after i finish, maybe i go after them. Besides, there are too much games released to waste too much time on a single game just because of the achievements.

At first I didn't pay any attention to it. Then I started getting into it. Then it took over my life and all I did was play 12 hours a day going for achievements. I was renting from Gamefly and Blockbuster. I finally stopped and have slowed down over the past 6 months. It wore me out to the point I hardly even play games anymore.

i enjoy achievements, not to the point where i'll got totally out of my way to get them but if they're within reach or add more playing time to the game i'll go for them.

Achievements are good for the most part (adds some replay value and a sense of accomplishment for doing a difficult one), it's only when people buy games just for them is when it becomes too much.

I think achievements are great. Whenever I start up a new game, I always look through all of the achievements in the game. It gives me more to do, and adds replay value.

I love em, makes you have a record of completion outside of the game! So kinda makes it more worthwhile completing all these different games and their submissions, when you have a little record of it all!

this kind of thing happened to me, at one point, they are very addictive but made me play games in a different way until i realised i was playing for the next achieviement or to round off my gamerscore to the next big number. it wasnt fun and i had to take a long break from gaming.

now i take absolutely no notice and games are fun again not one big grinding achieviement chore.

even if only subconsciously, when achieviements insidiously start dictating games and the way you play games, then they are a problem.

First playthrough for a game should be stress free and not worrying about achievements. This is where you unlock the bulk story achievements most games offer. Then, after you finish the game, look at the achievements and figure out what you need to do to get them. This way it adds replay value to your game.

I don't give a rat's behind about achievements. I mean I only have a gamerscore of 605 because I now play mainly multiplayer games.

I play for both, but i get games i like and then get acheivments. They ad more to the game and are proof that you do certain things on games like beat them on the hardest dificulty.

It's a psychological feature. Used because they give you a frequent sense of accomplishment. It's a very cynical method intended to make people addicted. This is also why most achievements are easy to obtain and just require you to put in time. Genuinely difficult achievements aren't very effective for making people addicted. Are they killing games though? Not at all. They are making them bigger and stabilizing the customer base. An addict is a more reliable buyer.
