Just wondering what other gamers thought on acheivements on games. Whether your playing it because you enjoy the game or just purely going after the acheivements or a bit of both?

I pay no minde to the acheivements. I don't read head to see what they are. I just play through and unlock as I go. I've never got 100% acheivements on a game and I prolly never will.
I don't play games I don't like just to get achievements. I'll look to see what they are, or open up a guide to find collectibles (especially when they unlock stuff besides achievements, like pages in Alan Wake). I never go out of my way to do annoying this like finding pigeons in GTA4, all the orbs in Crackdown, or all the blast shards in Infamous (which is the last trophy I need for 100%).
Achievements are not a problem in any way for someones enjoyment of a game. If someone finds themselves angrily trying to get achievements instead of playing what they like then they probably were not big fans of video games in the first place.
Achievements give you more to do in a game and add replay value. If you don't like a game then don't try for achievements in it and if you don't like achievements then don't look at the achievement list. There is no negatives to them.
correct, i have never seen a negative for achievements...except when there are tonnes of MP ones and no one playing MP :PAchievements give you more to do in a game and add replay value. I like achievements ONLY if they are single player... Multiplayer achievements just gives you Halo 3 where kids come into the lobby "HEY DOES ANYONE WANT TO BOOST BLAH BLAH WITH ME!?!?"... Games like CoD are the example I want all games to be like, just put them all in story/coop... None in vs mp...
And especially never ever again in all of gaming should anyone do achievements like GRAW1 for the love of god... Achievements for reaching number 1 on a leader board... Accept GRAW had 3 of those achievements for 3 different leaderboards... And an achievement for "hosting 1000 mp matches"... Stuff that would either take hundreds of hours or are just physically impossible without cheating...
I want achievements that are:
1) Story based...
2) Out of my way based... What I mean by this is achievements that would make me do something I wouldn't otherwise do... Like if there are achievements for getting all of something, or saving not killing everyone in the game, etc... Things that if there were no achievement for them, I would be oblivious to them...
3) Replay value based... Different difficulties, completionist things such as 100% (as long as they have it set up correctly)... More games need to be like Batman: AA... Whenever you get a collectible, it is marked off your map, all collectibles are vaguely put onto your map so you can find them (but you still have to look for them)... And most were not simply collectibles, but puzzles... To where finding them was just the beginning, then you needed to solve the riddle (hence why they were called Riddler challenges...)... No more GTA4 or Crackdown things where there is no tracking at all... And if in your quest to get all 800 orbs or 200 pigeons you miss 1 thing along the way... You basically have to start over because it is impossible to find that 1 out of 200 or 1 our of 800 that you missed in the entire city...

The Good is that it adds more gametime into your game and lets you know more of what the game is featuring too. The Bad is, it can add stress as some are 'you know you can earn it but can't seem to get it' and not getting a chunk of achievements can leave you unfulfilled with the gameLospROpHETs
Yeah I like some because after I finish the game I have something to go back and have a reason to play it, but the first playthrough I dont take notice to it at all, its just when I wanna play some more that it gives me a goal to achieve
this guy really knows, I don't mind MP achievements as long as they are: kill 100 eemies with certain weapons or reach x rank, what I don't like is achievements that are a combination of luck and skill like some of halo's, or some ridiculous feats in battlefield bad company like....run over 5 enemies in a boat.....what the hell is that?I like achievements ONLY if they are single player... i dislike them,
they make gaming feel like one long grind. they kinda suck the fun out of it.
i never bother with them but i constantly get people comparing my skills on a game with the achieviements (which i cant turn off, and gamerscore is always tied to my tag)
it makes you do pointless mundane tasks. if i wanted to collect 1000 rabbits or whatever, i would do it because i loved a certain game not to grind for an achiviement, which then you will feel obliged to do so on the next game you play whether you like it or not. in the end gaming becomes a chore.
once people get 100% they feel the game is done and never go back to it. so the argument about them being like high scores is ridiculous. i can still go back to space invader seven though its been out about 30 years and still try to beat my high score.
and its really irritating when i speak to a friend or play co-op and all they can think about is where the next achiviement is coming from
I agree with some of the points raised by Buttons1990 - it is annoying to be playing a multiplayer game and have someone keep going on about how you should team up with them to get the acheivement for a billion headshots or whatever. A mate of mine (Lyrical Bre on Xbox Live) is basically out to max his gamerscore. If that's what he's into then I don't see it as a downside but it does seem a bit wierd. I don't care about my gamerscore - I've played about 50 characters on Oblivion for example and obviously you only get the acheivements on the first few goes - I play for the game, not the score.
EDIT: Just thought of this - Secret Acheivements are a good way to keep a game fresh and minimise the "I just want the acheivements" mentality. Of course, thanks to the internet (booo) you can just look them up.
It's always up and down. Some games give nice achievments, and then some they can't seem to figure out what to give. I guess some developers want to extend the game through MP, but most just add stuff in at times. RDR has some pretty cool ones referencing movies, or stories from years past in the game. I also liked some from almost any game that are original. The hardest ones are the forcefull onesfrom play through Expert (Not always enjoyable), and time trials. Not a lot of people out there enjoy the game enough to try and play the game the fastest they can. An achievment for something like this is weak in my books.
Agree with you on that! If more games were like that then I think more people would play more of the game and play it in it's entiretlyI like achievements ONLY if they are single player... I love achievments, they add a lot of replay value and make the game more complete. Only thing I don't like is if their online and they make people ruin games because their trying to get a certain one.
While they add replay value for most people, I actually replay games less because of them. Once I've completed a game and got about 500GS, I won't usually play it again, and yet on the PS2 I used to replay games like Hitman: Blood Money and God of War just for the fun. I don't know why achievements have done this to my gaming but they have.
Strange eh...
I like achievements. They add replay value for me and that's always a good thing in my book (I hate games that are too short). However, MP achievements and ones that are grinds can go to hell.
I have a friend who 'achievement spams' and who only plays games that offer easy achievements. Whenever we talk about games or if I mention I've bought a new game, the first thing he asks is what the achievements are like. It's bizarre to me. It's a nice feeling when I do something in-game and the achievement just pops up, but I wouldn't waste my time going out of my way to chase something such as points, especially if I wasn't earning it legitimately, for example through boosting etc
I agree that achievements give some games replay value. For me the gameplay is more important then the achievements, but I will grab some extra achievements if they are not to hard. As for people who just achievement hunt - well it is upto them it is not like they're hurting anyone.
I love achievements. They give me reasons to keep playing after I've beaten the game. I try to get all the achievements for every game I play but I don't play lame kids games just for easy achievements. There isn't really anything bad about them. If you don't care then just ignore them. You're not missing out on anything if you don't get them.

Yay, instead of typing all of that myself I can just click 'quote'. I agree 100%.
At first I didn't pay any attention to it. Then I started getting into it. Then it took over my life and all I did was play 12 hours a day going for achievements. I was renting from Gamefly and Blockbuster. I finally stopped and have slowed down over the past 6 months. It wore me out to the point I hardly even play games anymore.
i enjoy achievements, not to the point where i'll got totally out of my way to get them but if they're within reach or add more playing time to the game i'll go for them.
Achievements are good for the most part (adds some replay value and a sense of accomplishment for doing a difficult one), it's only when people buy games just for them is when it becomes too much.

this kind of thing happened to me, at one point, they are very addictive but made me play games in a different way until i realised i was playing for the next achieviement or to round off my gamerscore to the next big number. it wasnt fun and i had to take a long break from gaming.
now i take absolutely no notice and games are fun again not one big grinding achieviement chore.
even if only subconsciously, when achieviements insidiously start dictating games and the way you play games, then they are a problem.
I don't give a rat's behind about achievements. I mean I only have a gamerscore of 605 because I now play mainly multiplayer games.
I play for both, but i get games i like and then get acheivments. They ad more to the game and are proof that you do certain things on games like beat them on the hardest dificulty.
