I have had a 360 for about a month now and until this week or so I thought achievement points were not a negative aspect to the Xbox 360 profile system. I am now playing the 4th game for the 360 since I got it and initially my plan was to have every achievement point for every game I played. Well I just came off of a 10 hour or so hunt for the flags in Assassin's Creed......dont do this. These achievements are seriously like trying to find a needle in a haystack, and you have to find 10 needles in 10 different haystacks. If I were to get every achievment point in this game it will probably take me another 20-30 hours, and thats just flags.

It was fun for about the first 2 hours, now I dont want to play any game on the 360 at all. Random feeling of unease and violent lash outs I have also maybe sensed within the mind.

I do not atempt this to show off or brag, it is more of a personal goal. I figured if the designers and such want to make this system of challenges for the gamer to go along with the game that would be cool with me, now its like I can beat the game and then have more to do.....But when the designers or whomsoever's decision directly causes the gamer to want to do violent things to them I think they may have possibly not done a very fun or good job with the achievements.

So far every game I have played has had some ridiculous achievement I came across at some point in time, this one in Assassin's Creed may just be a little to haynus. The cities in this game are on such a enormous scale, this isnt peaches castle or hyrule, this is like the size of a large American city times 3 with some other areas.

Call of Duty 4-Veteran Mile high club....that took a few hundred tries, that really wasn't that fun either.

Apparently chromehounds has impossible achievements...

Mass Effect....You have to beat the game like 3 times just for the achievement of playing more with a particular character...so absurd...

The achievement points should maybe just be for beating the game or doing other reasonable tasks, as well as tasks that take skill.....not excessively large amounts of time....

There is much more to be said about this topic from myself....Also I am a little out of it from looking for flags for half a day or so with hardly any breaks....

I am curious if anyone else had this more or less happen to them when they first got a 360, how did you handle this and what did you realize....I am curious as to what others thoughts are regarding this as well...this should not really be read with a tone of annoyance or in the form of complaint, even though it may lok like these things.

Play games for fun not points!

Personally i can sum up quite quickly which points i know I am and want to get ...the others i just leave to those people who clearly have far to much time and paitience on thier hands. Best of luck to them but after getting annoyed at VF5 and thier stupid GP's I soon realised that once you start playing for points not the game you can become very bitter very fast :)

yeah play games for fun, my goal is also to 1000 in everygame, but im not going to waste 30 hours of my life for an 20G achivement like in GTA4 where you have to get 15 million dollars or the highest rank online, if i get 800/1000.

i try to get all the achievements for all the games i play. sometimes i give up, like winning every multiplayer variant in gta or 10k kills in gears. and i dont consider using guides cheating especially for the stupid item hunt achievements like flags in assassins creed. i actually enjoy the 'mile high club' type achievements because theyre hard and theres no trick to it so when someone has it you know theyre good enough to get it legit.

there are a few things i hate about achievements. when my multiplayer games are ruined by boosters, i cant explain how irritating this can be. there shouldnt be ant achievements like 'get this many of this kind of kills in multi' because people always boost for those. i hate the 'get to the top of the leaderboard' ones. dont think i really need to explain why. and because i have ocd i hate games with achievements that dont end in a 0 or 5.

You dont think using guides and such for achievements that are tedious lessens the achieveing aspect to the system?

No offense meant here.

i dont see how this is a problem for anyone seeing as no ones forcing you to get the achivements, if you find it fun getting achievements thats good as cause your havin fun but when you get to the point where you jsut wat a number to tick jsut a little higher with hours of frustration then it gets kinda dumb.

only get achievements that you think will be fun or if you liek the game that much.

Some achievements are never worth it if you're not having fun with the game. IE: Gear's Seriously achievement. I think that the MP for Gears is alright, but will I slave months for a single achievement? No. Also, it helps if you go after one and known exactly what to do. I know how you feel with AC's flags, as I have those achievements. It was a pain at first, but there are sites out there that tell you exactly what to do.

I don't see stuff as finding the flags a negative. The extra gameplay and points are there for people who want them, and not for people that couldn't care less about them. Completing COD4 on veteran is an achievement and should be treated as such. I think people who want to go the extra miles and beat the Mile High Club deserve an extra few gamerscore. I think the points work especially well on some games, like XBL games. How many times did I play Track and field to get a perfect 45 degree achievement? about 20 more times than I would normally played the game. Really added to the value of the purchase price.

I don't see why people think they deserve 1000 pts for doing less work. The whole points of points is to A) Add gameplay and B) Compare yourself to friends. I like the fact that games like Orange box have rediculous achievement points. I'll never get them all but I like the way they work. I like the fact you get nickle and dimed by getting 5pts for killing someone with a toilet. For someone who's into the game, thats an achievable goal. For someone who's not, it isn't. Is the feeling of accomplishment really better for getting 200 pts for doing an episode of CSI really better than the MHC on COD4?

Having said that I was pretty into points when I first got my 360. I could less either way now. After playing terrible games for a year for easy points just made me realize I'm more happy getting 390 on a game I like rather than 1000 for one I didn't. Plus I play a ton of games on my ps3 so I don't have to worry about it.

I do like to get as many of the achievements as possible out of a game before I get fed up of it.

In Assassin's Creed I didn't have a problem finding the flags, but maybe because I tried to totally complete each section of a city before moving on. That way it broke it up into blocks of seaching for 33 flags, instead of getting to the end and looking for 400, which would get boring quickly!

When I get a game I will look through the list of achievements to see which I can expect to get, and which I'll just leave. Any multiplayer game that wants 10,000+ kills will just be ignored.

Overall I have about 75% of all the achievements I could have got - 31,000 from a max of 41,000

Achievements are a great way of extending the life of games and ultimately getting more fun from them. I really like achievements and do put time into getting them but i wouldn't spend absolutely ages on one achievement that is only worth about 10g. Having the full 1000 is nice but i only have it on 2 games and they didn't take that long to do.

Also, where the hel did "Apparently chromehounds has impossible achievements" come from? That had nothing to do with anything that you were saying.

Even the people who are achievement point whores know what games to play to get the 1000/1000 and ones to just play for fun. I know some points are designed for replay value so you need to decide if your playing a game because it's just a game or because you want 1000/1000.

Well I'd drop your plan of going for 1000G on every game if I was you. Most games have at least one achievement that is ridiculous.
