Mmmm... There's definitely merit in them, but the main benefits are for the games publishers who can comfortably release utter gash, safe in the knowledge that some fool (me included) will play through their waste of pixels to snaffle an easy 1000 points.
I totally agree that MS should reward its users with MS points as an incentive to play more. Its not "Real" money so the losses would be negligible compared to the increase in use from enthusiastic gamers keen to get a tangible return on their investment of precious game time. Lets say..... 800 MS points for every 10,000 Achievement level acquired. Sounds fair to me.
Single player achievements definitely increase the life of a game so for that they should be praised. The multiplayer ones aren't as well thought out, and there's nothing worse than joining a room to find a "boosting" session in progress when you just want to have fun.
Overall a very cleaver business decision by MS and I must keep reminding myself that these virtual trophies mean absolutely nothing in the real world. (he says as he returns the Fantastic Four disc to Blockbuster :))
