Picked up RDR and Alan Wake today. As I'm typing, I'm playing Alan Wake. Recently there was talk that Alan Wake wasn't 720p. Remedy has claimed that it is 720p. I'm playing AW right now and it's clear that it's lower than 720p resolution. Character models and facial models are top-notch during cutscenes.. but in-game.. it doesn't look at all impressive. Environments have jaggies all over. Most noticeable are pieces of wood that are extremely low res. Just think back to some of the levels in Halo 3, but sometimes worse. I know gameplay is more important, but graphics are just important nowadays. And they need to match the quality of gameplay.

It's funny how Alan Wake looked amazing in trailers, gameplay videos, screenshots but it's barely next-gen.. when RDR which didn't look so good in videos and screens, turned out looking amazing. I just didn't think I would be bothered by it.. but I kinda am.. after waiting over 3 years for this game. It's very disappointing to see the least, but what can you do?

After thinking back on reviews.. they're pretty spot on. 8.5 is pretty accurate.. and I've one of the avid fanboys that really wanted this game to score well. I have to say, Alan Wake fan or not.. it's a pretty spot on score.

I guess I'm spoiled by Gears of War series, Uncharted 2, and RDR.

8.5 is a bad score? I am sorry but that is hilarious because 8.5 is a great score.

It did score well. The word beneath 8.5 is "Great".

I agree, goes to show you how spoiled todays gamer is, he is also wrong about the whole native resolution thing as well.

8.5 is a good, and to say this game is barely next gen is going waaaaaaaaaaay too far. there's a lot worse looking games out. go turn on your ps2/gc/xbox and play a game on that and compare the two.

I am playing the game right now and the actual game, presentation, voice acting, story are all exceptional. Really really entertaining and cool stuff. However, the fog looks disgustingly compressed and overall pretty nasty. The cut scenes look to be blurry and compressed as well. Kind of a shame but I will try to not have it ruin the experience.

I noticed that too. To the other posts. I was "trying" to say.. I wanted it to score well prior to the 8.5 rated reviews. I'm not saying 8.5 is bad at all. Hell, I've played and loved hidden gem games like Condemned Series and Valkyria Chronicles... but I am just being honest. I've been waiting for Alan Wake for a LONG time. I might have been harsh when I said barely next-gen. I'll retract that statement. But, like Sparkplug said, a lot of it is compressed. There is so much detail in this game. Textures, detail, everything is there.. but without at least 700-720p resolution, it isn't going to "pop."

Well of ocurse it's not barely next gen. It's a CURRENT gen game. We are way past the point of being able to have such a discussion about Xbox 360 games, the system is nearly five years old. The "next" in this gen is gone, man. Has been for a long time.

It is in 720p. Probably just varied low texture quality making it look like crap and not a progressive resolution issue.

the stuff you describe isnt a result of low relolution over all, its the result of the games protracted development cycle, when a game takes a long time to be finished under polised bits are going to appear despite the devs best attempt to sort it, and as for low res textures on a few things like bits of wood and such thats not too uncommon, you look at any game and you'll find low res textures padding things out here and there, some games more than others That and it might just be poor graphics design work, 720p doesnt mean instantly good graphics

I see. I think you're right now that you put it that way.

Makes you wonder if it being 5 years old contributes to some of it's last gen looks here and there. Because I'm sure 5 years ago to them the game looked amazing. But to today's standards I guess it would look dated in some parts.

GET OVER IT PEOPLE. some of my most enjoyable video games this gen have had HORRRIBEL graphics problems, only to be rectifired in the sequel. Mass effect 1 had a horrible frame rate on the xbox, but i loved it to bits. Dragon Age has some of the worst background textures i have seen this gen, but isepnt 50 hours in it! the fact is Microsoft rushed the xbox out the door and we are paying the price with the underpowered Xenon GPU.

I agree that it's not the best looking game on the 360, but it has by far the best lighting. The game often looks better than anything else when you take a look at just how realistic the light effects with the torch are. It's top notch in my opinion. If anything looks bad graphics-wise, it's Too-Human.

As for 8.5 - it's nothing the grumble about. 8.5 suggests it's a great game (which it is).
