Sorry if there is a thread on this already, but yeah, 8.5. What do you think? I personally think its a good review, I was expecting a 9.0, but an 8.5 still means that it will definitely be awesome.

That's one of the most subjective "bads" I've seen in a long timeIf that's the only thing you can list as a negative then you're better off leaving it blank, that's going to change from person to person.A bad should be an actual problem like a difficulty spike or something that's felt by at the very least the large majority of players.Jaysonguy
It does sound pretty subjective. "Hmm....I didn't really feel '9.0 Surprised'....I felt more '8.5 Suprised.'"
I wonder if Alan Wake is a victim of being too late to the party? I wonder if this game would've gotten higher scores if it came out earlier instead of being in development limbo for so long. It's still a good game, I'm sure. But I'm slightly disappointed. I was really expecting 9 scores all around, and maybe as a Resident Evil 4 for the new generation...but I guess not.ASK_Story
Usually the problem that comes with releasing a game "too late" is the graphics become outdated, a la Dragon's Age: Origins. I don't really seen any complaints about the visuals in this game though.
Don't get too bummed, there's a LOT of 9's on Metacritic.
Not bad, but honestly I was expecting at least a 9 because it has been in development since the launch of the 360. Plus they said it wasn't very long (10 hrs.). I'll wait until it drops in price before I pick it up, but I'll definitely get it at some point.
[QUOTE="Jaysonguy"]The game relies heavily on its atmosphere and story. Its billed as an experience much like Heavy Rain. I can certainly see where the reviewer is coming from.I take issue with this

No, you don't and no one else does either, that's my point
That is such a subjective negative for the game it's not even worth mentioning because in his opinion the game doesn't have that.
The pros and cons of a game should be universal parts of the game that can be graded.
I actually agree. I don't think the score it got is unfair or anything like that, I just thought that bullet point sounded very silly, especially as the only "bad."I take issue with this

so people are picking up the one bad but not picking up on the4 or 5 good points such as good story telling ( surley a must for a single player game) or creepy atmosphere ( surley a must for a survival horror )
why is it when a game gets lower than a 9 then people on the forums start thinking its average???? belive it or not the scores go from 1- 10you know!

Well combined with other reviews... The game is starting to seem that way... Many mention week voice acting... They say there are few plot twist... And they say the ending is predictable and open (for more chapters)... Well a Psychological Horror Thriller, with weak acting (and thus weak characters), few twists, and a weak ending doesn't seem like much of a thriller... They all praise the visuals and gameplay... But in a game where there is only a single player story, YOU NEED A GOOD STORY... And it isn't seeming that way...
I for one canceled my preorder... I may rent it later, but I doubt it...
The only time a I see a red flag is when I see a game I like score 6-7 /10.
8.5 is respectable in this current gen. Borderlands a master piece of a game and it got 8.8.
Why do people thing anything less than 9.0 is bad?
5 is average!
6 is fair (this grade is whether you're a fan of the series - dedication to finishing the story even though it's not up to normal standards)
7 is good (Good game but alot of flaws keeping it from being perfect)
8 is great (Great game, but you can notice the bugs/flaws)
9 is incredible (little to no flaws, all around fun/awesome game)
10 is perfect (A game to be spoken about for years to come)
^that's usually how I break it down.
From what I've read - Alan Wake is a 8.5(if you round it off, it's a 9) - I don't see what's the big deal, enjoy your games and try not to let reviews influence your entertainment.
I agree 100%. I love how he stated a ton of "good" things about the game, with barely two subjective "bads" yet Alan Wake only receives an 8.5 score? I am surprised and extremely disappointed with the review, but not the game. I'm buying AW day one.I take issue with this

It probably would have been a much more awesome game had they stuck to the original development of the once pc exclusive. That was over 6 years ago. But somewhere along the line they lost focus with what they set out to do and the game nearly became vaporware. Until years later when they decided to pull its aging scraps together and make it a console game instead. What they had apparently was not good enough for pc gamers, but it was marvelous for console gamers.
Eh. Not the most normal thing I've ever seen in a review, but it's valid, especially for a game like Alan Wake where one would expect some surprises. Not quite sure if they expected something extraordinary in the gameplay department, surprise-wise, though. That's a really weird complaint. Maybe it's just really funky wording? Overally, great score though. Will pick it up... eventually. I have too many games on my plate right now, so waiting for a price drop while playing some other great games I missed out on won't be the end of the world.I take issue with this

I agree with most people, the review is a little funny but its only a review. It gives you a rough idea how good the game is.An 8.5 here and a 9 at IGN,thats good enough for me.For the people interested in the game its very likely they wont be disappointed.Im looking forward to playing it.Hopefully my personal rating will be 9.5-10.Remember Mass Effect,Left 4 Dead,Bioshock 2,Fable 2,The Darkness,Crackdown,Borderlands....just to name a few.
i was really excited about this game a couple of months ago but after the last delay.. .i was like EFF it... im getting RDR instead. ill prolly get it somewhere down the road but i wont be paying more then 19.99 for it.
"Lacks surprising, memorable gameplay moments." That one quote makes me wonder how a game that in development for 5 freakin years not have a memorably moment, that worries me. I'll still be getting this game because I've been waiting forever for it. Can't wait..I just hoper there's something to remember!!

The review comment is subjective because everyone is going to take different things from different games. Per-say, I recently bought and beat Zeno Clash and I didn't really enjoy the combat, but what I did enjoy was the story and universe that surrounded the game. While I was incredibly surprised and taken back by it's story and am still thinking about it today someone else might completely hate the storyline and only enjoy the combat. Saying you didn't take anything from a game once you got up and walked away is a personal opinion not an overall statement that would be a problem for everybody else. This should not have been a reason to bring the game's review score down.
While I completely agree with this "memorable" statement being completely bias I also have to remind people that 8.5 is still a great score. If the only thing they could come up with to bring the score down was a subjective statement then this must be a great game. It's a real shame that Gamespot seems to have to always find a negative to bring a game down a notch.

Hate to break it to ya, but you're kind of an elitist douchebag.
That makes no sense. They're different platforms with different advantages and disadvantages. I'm getting AW anyway. 8.5 is good enough for me, and the 'lack of surprising moments' comment is subjective enough to ignore.Wow, I can't believe the games finally out. I totally foresaw the 8.5 review - no game that spends that long in development deserves a 9. The .5 taken off is retribution for having to hear about the game for the last 5 years, I think. I'll rent it, that's for sure.
I agree 100% with that. It's exactly what I was thinking while reading the review.I take issue with this
